Christmas treats
Anyone got any of their Christmas treats yet? Or does anyone not bother getting anything special in? So far I've got
Celebrations Heroes Nuts Crisps Savoury snacks Baileys Disaronno I'm still to get loads more bits and want some inspiration. What special treats are you having this Christmas? |

None of those snacks are particularly seasonal are they? The fact that nuts, Celebrations, Heroes, Quality Street, oranges and Bailey's are available all year round doesn't ake them particularly special IMO,

They don't necessarily have to be 'special', just things you buy or treat yourself to at Christmas that you don't buy the rest of the year. |

We do tend to get some nice Hotel Chocolat stuff in though and I'll probably get some extra bottles of good craft beers on top of my usual monthly delivery. The only other thing we might particularly get in for Xmas is some really nice party food to nibble on for nights where we have mates round for drinks. |

Although items can be bought all year around - I only buy certain things at Christmas. I buy good quality nougat, chocolate brazils, pringles (and other big sharing crisp bags), roasted peanuts, speciality cheeses and posh crackers. I also love sliced, pickled beetroot at Christmas to go with the cheese.
Drinks wise I treat myself to a bottle of Jack Daniels and a couple of bottles of port. |

For me it's the indulgence-sized packs that are wheeled out at xmas time. So I some big slabs of pate & stilton that seemed more reasonably priced than the usual mini-packs. Plus a tub of mini-cheddars and Twiglets to nibble.

I bought some Chocolate oranges the other day (I'm aware they are available all year round but to me it's a Christmas only treat as I always get one in my stocking.)
Made some mince pies. Clementines. Baileys. Dissorano. Nuts. Harvey's Cream. Medjool dates. Will be doing a proper Christmas shop next week when i'll stock up on more treats. Love to have the cupbaords fully stocked at this time of year. |

![]() Curious about mentions of Disaronno.. How has that become a thing? Not watching TV, I'm kinda immunised to adverts and hadn't heard of that amaretto before. |

If it's any consolation, my mini-cheddars tub is empty. Pesky ghosts! Or I was quality checking them ahead of xmas.

![]() I'm intrigued by the way 'prosecco' seems to be the in thing now. A few years back 'cava' was all the rage. They're just champagne-style wines, aren't they? All much of a muchness, but somebody decides what's going to be trendy and the sheeple follow. |

Is there anything left to have as a Christmas treat which people can't have all the year round?

I have the impression that a lot of people think that Disaronno is the name of the drink itself, rather than a brand name. Probably as a result of the way it has been marketed. They used to call it 'Amaretto Di Saronno'. Other amarettos (amaretti?) are available

In some ways, that could be a good thing. When I were a lad, it was all Asti Spumante for cheap fizz. Or de-greasing... but not exactly a classy tipple. But the Italians have always made some decent and less sweet proseccos & as wine consumption has increased here, there's perhaps a realisation that other sparkling wines are available. Including some nice English ones-http://bookings.chilfordhall.co.uk/wineshop used to work there as a student

eg I could get really good quality smoked salmon any time but I only treat myself to this indulgence at Xmas. If I have it any other time it is usually supermarket own which is fine for sarnies etc. |

Prosecco is very nice, nothing sheep-ish about it. It's also a lot cheaper than champagne and many people find it nicer as it's less dry.
Apart from the Spanish cava, which enjoyed a similar burst of trendiness a few years back, there are good French bubblies from outside the Champagne region, such as Vouvray and Saumur from the Loire. And plenty more examples from other countries that are just as good. It's a shame when one brand hogs the public perception like this. |

Cheese footballs! Gotta have cheese footballs at Christmas. Also absurdly large bits of ham, on the bone if possible, but certainly coated in all kinds of gooey sticky stuff which you can stick in the fridge and just hack away at. And cheeses so large they will go all hard and mouldy long before they are even half-eaten. And posh mint chocolates - not After Eights - a vital way to squeeze in just a few extra calories when you are completely stuffed. And real old-fashioned wines like port, sherry and madeira.
