getting rather concerned as my 6s is refusing point blank to update to it.

tried everything - dfu mode, recovery, restoring, shift+update & shift+restore using the IPSW file and time after time keep getting "iPhone could not be restored" and either error 1014 or 3014.

Have you tried restoring as a new phone or tried updating via iTunes? Or maybe wait until later when it's less busy. You haven't done anything like Jailbreak to tinker with the phone have you?

Could be there's a swarm of people updating so Apple's servers are swamped with update verification requests. Alternatively, try this.

That would be quite a stretch.

i've tried restoring and updating in iTunes. it extracts the software from the IPSW file and stops at that point with the errors. i've tried shift+restore & shift+update with the IPSW file manually and still get the error.

even tried shift+restore in DFU mode and no luck.

i haven't jailbroken an iPhone in many years - probably even back to the time i had a 3GS . incidentally, the spectaculator zx spectrum emulator app has added the julian gollop collection of games which includes Chaos, so it's removed any reason i have to ever jailbreak !

I've just thought actually, one thing I haven't tried is to do an OTA update on the phone itself over WiFi so i'll try that now.

That's how I did the update and it worked fine in only about 5 minutes. There is also an update for the Apple Watch which is much needed as syncing to the iPhone and opening of Apps is still very slow.

Could it have anything to do with you already installing the beta?

Sometimes the simplest option is the best.

I tried this trick today which I read on Yahoo to speed up my iPhone by pressing the power button then waiting for the "slide to power off" to appear but keeping my finger pressed on the power button until the apps screen came back and it seems to have worked and made my phone faster and more responsive.

I'm not normally known for "simple" when these sorts of things happen . Funnily enough, i also tried the same trick from Yahoo as well with the same results. Certainly a useful thing to know.

It says it speeds up the phone by clearing out the RAM memory shutting down any processes that may be slowing down the handset. Which is handy to know next time the phone is a bit laggy.

I hate to tell you, Mr D, but it hasn't been corrected .

And you are probably out of time to edit now.

The guy who wrote the Yahoo article did a bad job. He failed to copy the instructions from the blog properly, he writes that you have to hold the power button down, but the original blog says hold the power button down until slide to unlock appears and then hold the home button. http://www.marcforrest.com/2015/12/0...ur-ios-device/

Seems to clear the ram as after I did this and opened Safari on my 6S Plus it reloaded the webpage I was on which rarely happens.

I was wondering why it took so long for the apps screen to reappear after I was holding the power button for nearly a minute. Thanks for posting the link with the correct instructions.

Oh, ok, I'll give you that one, I thought you meant you corrected the actual mistake. I even refreshed twice to make sure it hadn't changed before I made the post .

This is what's known as a 'Hard Reset' and i've not looked at the link but you need to hold down the home button & the sleep/wake/unlock until the screen goes off and the Apple logo appears.

Strange how this is rearing its head again as i've been doing it for years.

What you've stated is a hard reset, but it's not related to this new tip for clearing ram.

I don't think it's a hard reset cause I've done that in the past as well. You press the home button when "slide to unlock" appears on the screen after pressing the power button. Oops just noticed Jason answered you just before me.
