So proud of Helen!

I'm so proud of Helen how far she's come on the show and I'm so thankful she did strictly. I was upset at first but now I'm not. So surprised she went and Georgia was in the dance off. They are the two best dancers in the competition. I just don't understand how people didn't vote for them and voted for Kellie, Katie and Anita and they are the worst left. I will continue to support Helen as I am a big fan of hers. I think she is a lovely inspirational lady. I can't wait to see her on Call The Midwife at Christmas and the new year

Well that was almost a lovely thread.

People vote for their favourites, unfortunately not everybody has the same favourite as you. It was a shame she went though, I agree.

More of the same rehashing.

Don't blame "people"... It was the judges who put Helen in the bottom two! She just wasn't sufficiently popular to lift her out of that position and put someone else there instead.

I guess Georgia doesn't have that many people voting for her either - it's only when we get to the stage where there a fewer contestants on the board that it becomes noticeable.

Be proud of Helen without criticising others and how others vote

I loved watching her and Aliaz, last year Aliaz was wasted with Alison I hope he gets a decent partner next time as well.I feel the same way about Aliona having a great partner this year she's great to watch.

I loved Aljaž and Alison though. Not so much the dancing as the genuine (seeming) fun they had in training and the inventive way he choreographed for her. I'd been 'OK' with Aljaž when he was partnered with Abbey but really started to like him with Alison. Now he is one of my favourite pros

From the dictionary - 'proud...feeling deep pleasure or satisfaction as a result of one's own achievements, qualities, or possessions or those of someone with whom one is closely associated.'

Why would you be 'proud' of Helen? Do you know her personally? Have you helped her in her career or maybe with her dancing?

What a strange choice of word.

So no one has pride in athletes achievements or proud in your children when do something good?
I felt proud of Helens behaviour when she went out so suddenly and IMHO too early. I also will miss her and wish she hadn't gone. I had great pleasure watching her dance and thought she and Alijaz had a great relationship. They were dealt a rotten hand with that music for a Paso and all those ruddy extra dancers.

Feeling pride in children's achievements is understandable, as even if one has done nothing to help them in their pursuits, one has at least contributed 50% of the successful DNA.

Feeling pride in the success of someone on telly with whom one has no actual connection is rather strange, tbh. Enjoying their performance or being pleased that they won rather than someone else is fine.

Seems a teeny bit nit picky to me. I've no connection whatsoever to Mo Farrah but felt proud as punch on Super Saturday during the Olympics!

I have a connection with my children so pride in their achievements is understandable because there is a personal investment.
I might, as a Brit feel proud when a fellow Brit achieves great success.
But when a celeb I have never met does something .... I might feel pleased for them. I might feel sorry for them. But I have no right to feel proud of them. That would be a little bit creepy in my book. It's claiming a connection that I don't have.

I guess in terms of the Olympics, the connection is nationality, though even so, being proud of the achievements of a GB athlete is stretching things a bit. To be blunt, beyond maybe indirectly helping Mo's funding via buying Nike products or Lotto tickets, what have you done to help his achievements? Unless I've missed something, the answer is "nothing". (That's not meant to be personal to you; it's just to highlight that outside of friends and family, the achievements of AN Other are completely independent of us and therefore not something to be proud of. You might just as well be proud that Ben Nevis is hasn't fallen down!)

I was cheering as loudly as anyone when Mo crossed the line first. The Olympics are a huge nationalistic ego trip, and I'd sooner a Brit won than some random foreigner!

I hope I wasn't on spectator cam when Cav won the World Champs, or Mr Wiggins the Tour de France.

A proud, snotty mess and proud of it.

Whoops, looks like I took a wrong turn and ended up in Pedants' Corner!

Please excuse me, I was looking for the Strictly forum.

Well she is doing the tour, so you can see her dancing in person.

Bit weird she got booted when she has signed up, unless she had something lined up (for the BBC) that meant she had a clash of commitments (filming for CTM ?) so was unable to do Strictly any more this series.

It has been suggested John Sergeant had something else lined up later in the year, and was not expecting to go as far as he did - hence why he "quit" in his series

IT would not be widely reported if they suddenly had to do a load of reshoots for some reason on a drama series.

Well there we are so much for the BEEB support the ones on the tour only theory.

Ok so pride,

Yes I did feel pride in the way Helen was gracious in defeat and the way she danced in the competition. She had a whole load of in my view unnecessary flack thrown at her, from people taking against her accent, to being called a bitch and being hated by all the other contestants.

There were also unrealistics expectations of her dancing , people expected her to be perfect, that Paso for example had it been danced by a few of the others would have been praised to the skies, and as for her face , she tried hard to Gurn to SCD requirements but couldn't. As a person I can't tell you how good I think that is, the gurners of this world are just odd.

All through the competition I supported Helen against the flack and I was / am proud of how she worked hard, proved her naysayers wrong and showed what a lovely gracious dancer and lady she was.

So yes I am proud that the lady I chose to support ended up showing everyone what a lovely lady she was, and that I was right to support her.

Ok, is that OK to feel proud in her achievements, relating it to me. Not too creepy for anyone.

Honestly can people just not let Helen anything, even though she has gone she just has to be denied even pride in her acheivements.

I am glad she did so well I hope this will give her a career boost.

Helen and Aljaz were just so wonderful to watch and I really enjoyed every dance they did since their Viennesse Waltz to Billy Preston and Syretta Wright's "With you, I'm born again".

I totally agree with that. Alison didn't find it particularly easy but I did admire her determination. This has been said many times before, when a professional wins a particular series, he/she is usually then landed with a duffer for the next series if they decide to renew their contract with the show.

I also remember from last year that Aliona was paired with Masterchef's Gregg Wallace and he was the first contestant to be eliminated from the show. On his second dance, he messed up the ending.
