My boy cat is a girl!

We found out today that Alan, is in fact a girl!! We got her at 8wks from my cousin and she sexed all of the kittens - she kept two for herself which took the number of her cats to 9. Stupidly we didn't think to check.

We have an older boy cat, Trevor who is just over 6. Trev has been 'done' and we were planning on having Alan 'done' early in the new year.

They are house cats so not worried about her getting caught.

We have only ever had boy cats before, I was just wondering if there is anything else I need to watch out for? Anything else we need to do? Ugh feel a bit silly now as she is 7mths old.

Happened to my brother but in reverse, he got given a cat by a family member. They told him it was a girl, but after taking it to a vet and the vets initially believing it was a hermaphrodite it was confirmed to be a boy just with inverted organs. Thus Lilly became Toby after nearly a year of life.

Nothing else you should watch out for that I can think of, in fact most of the time male cats will get along better with female cats. Obviously without knowing the full circumstances it is hard to say for sure, but if the vet has checked her out and said she will be fine than I would just do as you have been doing for the last few months. Gender really doesn't make a difference when they have been fixed.

Thank you, Alan is definitely a girl. My cousin has wrongly sexed all 5 of the kittens!!! Why we didn't notice is another matter.

I assumed there wasn't much difference was just shocked and wanted to reassure myself.

She will be spayed in the new year as originally planned.

We are still calling her Alan, as stupid as it sounds it really suits her.

You think 7 months is bad. My brothers step daughters cat Susie was 17 when they discovered she was a he

It can be quite hard to tell at such a young age or if they have been neutered or are extra fluffy. There is a way to tell from the shape of their .... orifices, apparently!

It's easy to turn Alan into a female name. Just add an "a" and make Alana!

Giving cats some human names does seem so funny. We had a cat called Oliver when I was small but it seemed OK that one.

Well, erm, yes. When they wash themselves male cats are quite visibly male if you get what I mean!!

Depends how much fur they have. Our Maine Coons are colour coded for our convenience, otherwise you'd never know.

Well I think Alan is cute for her. Glad your getting her spayed, even just to stop them straying.

I like Alan as well.
Warning for a couple of naughty words

My niece has a female cat called Jack (my nephew named her as she was his originally)
My own female cat is called Houdini. I'm getting her spayed in January. She'll just be 6 months old but I would rather get her done early as my adult male cat goes outside and she's already made a couple of escape attempts when I let him out.

Six months isn't considered early these days. Cats can fall pregnant at six months so many vets now will spey at five or even four. Some do it by weight.
Do be very careful with your girl - if she comes on heat before she's spayed you'll find it very hard to keep her in.
