Urgh, it pains me to see Sacha Baron Cohen wasting his talents. He was a great, edgy on the road comic actor (Borat, Ali G) and when it was clear that his shtick was coming to an end (Bruno was terrible), I hoped he move into more dramatic fare. But no, he's actually regressed and making generic comedy trash. He's shown glimpses of how good he can be dramatically. I'm gutted that the Freddie Mercury biopic didn't come to fruition.

A bit premature to write off his career for one movie...I agree that he is probably capable of good dramatic roles...for example I liked his subtle, understated performance in Hugo.

Think we need to give him a chance...studios will still see him as Ali G and Borat, as that is the bulk of his resume.

So in fairness it may not be so much down to his personal choices, so much as the perception of him from casting directors and studio heads...and like every one else the man has to work and put food on the table.

And its not like he is still re-hashing Ali G and Borat in endless sequels and on TV. I get the impression he is kind of holding out for the right parts, so good luck to him.

Apart from Borat promoting the film on Jimmy Kimmel

Obviously it may not be showing us the full picture, but when a joke gets old during the trailer it doesn't bode well.

That's nothing new for SBC of course. The early satire of his creations soon gave way to hollow mockery best suited to spiteful juveniles. A shame, because his initial idea of satire would have much to target these days.

Borat returns to the tv screen to implore the public not to watch "The Brothers Grimsby".

Or he may just enjoy doing character based comedy.

i think this movie looks well worth a watch.

He can't seem to hold the accent down anymore, Sacha Baron Cohen's own voice is coming through.

I suspect the title is going to be the best bit.

Saw it last night and the best joke is in the opening scene.

Most of the rest of it is lazy and excessively crude despite the quality and effort put into the Bond style action sequences.

The Grimsby connection isn't particularly relevant apart from some obvious cheap shots and stereotypes and SBC doesn't seem to put much into his characterisation as even his northern accent is largely absent and certainly uneven throughout .

Seems to rely on embarrasing to watch crudity and little kids being foul mouthed for laughs and the could have been plausible plot is also allowed to get annoyingly farcical unnecessarily .

No parody or satire on show here I'm afraid despite some obvious subject matter and I can't see where 4 star reviews are coming from.

What's happened to Empire?

That's more like a review from The Guardian or Sight and Sound.

"Racist, sexist, deeply conservative" and horror of horrors "champions family values".

Review the film don't make it all about your left-wing political views.

Seen it-loved it!

This is a totally MarmitE film. Some will love it, some will HATE it.

It's vulgar & crude & tasteless & unsophisticated.
And funny.

If you accept it for the gross out trash it is it's easier to access. This is not the "art" of Borat, it's pure LCD humour-which is fine as long as you accept the premise.

It is filmed well, I esp liked that the action sequences were filmed like you're playing a video game, I liked that conceit.

As I've stated in another thread.
Baron Cohen hasn't been funny in years.

That ship sailed a long time ago.

Best comedy in years! Much better than the dictator.

The elephant scene was a bit extreme but the film is hilarious!

Saw this last week, laughed at most of it, cringed at some of it. The "elephant scene" is pretty extreme, but I found it funny for it's sheer absurdness.

I disagree, but you're welcome to your opinion.

I just wanted to say that as he's been doing the promotion for this fim as himself, rather than in character as he has done for Ali G and Borat, I've actually found him very funny in various interviews he's done for Grimsby.

The elephant scene is one of the funniest things I have ever seen, I can't remember the last time I've laughed so much. Rest of the film is a bit hit and miss but there's plenty of laughs along the way.

Just been to see this.

Great for midweek laughs when you just need to chill, get out of the house and have uncomplicated fun. Crude beyond belief but sometimes you just need silly stuff

It could be a worse title.

Whilst in Germany (Whose IMAX in Berlin is miles better than Stevenage Cineworld IMAX) there is no mention of Grimsby as the title is "DER SPION UND SEIN BRUDER" Which pretty much translates to The Spy and his brother.

Have not seen it so cannot pass comment on the film. It makes me laugh as coming from Grimsby the uproar it as created within the town is laughable. Like i have always said, Parody is the best form of flattery!
