Is there anyway you can erase a DVD R that has been written to disk but not yet finalized?. As I have 2 disks that I had to cancel the recording on due to the programe failing whilst recording.

No. Once the section of disk containing the data has been written to that is it. You can delete the entries in the table of contents but that does not erase the actual data so does not free up the disk space.

It makes absolutely no difference whatsoever if it is finalised or not. If the laser has burnt ones and zeros into the dye layer on the disk then there is no way you can reverse that process on a R disk. The ones and zeros are there forever (or until the dye layer breaks down whichever comes sooner) and nothing can be written to that portion of the disk for all eternity.

Finalising has no effect on the portion of the disk that has had data burnt into it. All it does is write out various things like menus, disk directory etc in a standard format all players can recognise. It also prevents adding any additional recordings to the disk.

But even if the disk is not finalised anything already written to disk is stuck there forever. It cannot be overwritten with new data or the space it used erased and reclaimed. The best you can do is hide it from the menu/directory but you cannot free up the space it occupies.
