Looking at the updated schedules on Digiguide and can't believe how rubbish BBC One's Bank Holiday Monday schedule is. In years past, schedules on 2nd January used to be a follow-on day from Christmas and the 3rd or 4th would revert back to normal scheduling. But BBC One this year seem to have thrown that out of the window and decided to go back to normal on the 2nd. I guess this would normally be ok but as this is a Bank Holiday I can't believe the BBC schedulers *really think* this is good programming. Where's the mid morning movie? where's the afternoon movie double bill? It's just crazy..

BBC One - Bank Holiday Monday 2nd Jan

6.00am Breakfast.
9.15am Rip Off Britain.
10.00am Homes Under the Hammer.
11.00am Wanted Down Under.
11.45am Caught Red Handed.
12.15pm Bargain Hunt.
1.00pm BBC News.
1.45pm Father Brown.
2.00pm Impossible.
2.45pm Escape to the Country.
3.30pm The Hairy Bikers' Comfort Food.
4.15pm Money for Nothing.
5.00pm Antiques Road Trip.
5.45pm Pointless.
6.30pm BBC News.
7.00pm The One Show.
7.30pm Celebrity Mastermind.
8.00pm Eastenders.
8.30pm Would I Lie to You?
9.00pm Silent Witness.
10.00pm BBC News.
10.25pm Match of the Day.
11.45pm FILM: Eagle Eye.

In contrast ITV1 are reverting back to normal in the afternoon on Mon 2nd Jan, but in the morning they have scheduled 'Superman' at 10.10am which ok has been shown several times before, but at least they are recognising the fact that this is both the 2nd Jan and a Bank Holiday

Well that's BBC Oneness for you.

Seriously though it is horrendous, hardly going to cheer you up when you know it's back to work next day is it?

I thought Radio Times had said all subscriber copies would be delivered by yesterday ? Not here they haven't.
No they said by the 9th December, they were only posted (2nd class) on the 7th & 8th!

It wouldn't be so bad if they could at least slot 1 movie in the schedule, but there's absolutely zero effort in this schedule at all.

In contrast on 2nd Jan last year (although fell on a Saturday) we had Iron Man 3 as the main movie at 7.10pm and see below in 2015 when 2nd Jan fell on a Friday we had the following schedule..

6.00am Breakfast.
9.00am FILM: The Ant Bully.
10.20am B.O.B.S Big Break.
10.30 FILM: Flubber.
12.00pm Bargain Hunt.
1.00pm BBC News.
1.45pm FILM: The Sound of Music.
6.00pm BBC News.

And in 2014..

6.00am Breakfast.
9.00am Match of the Day.
10.30am FILM: The Pacifier.
12.00pm Bargain Hunt.
1.00pm BBC News.
1.45pm FILM: The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
3.25pm Escape to the Country.
4.10pm Flog It!
5.10pm Pointless Celebrities.
6.00pm BBC News.

So quite a contrast there from some recent years on 2nd Jan. In fact looking deeper through previous years, 2017's 2nd Jan schedule could well be the worst it's ever been.

On Monday January 1st 2007, BBC1's schedule was a normal daytime schedule until "Seabiscuit" at 2.30pm. I think it is because January 2nd is a Monday and is in a different week to the Christmas issue. This is of course, the norm for Bank Holidays on BBC1 these days, even Easter.

Apparently today is National Christmas Tree Day (love to meet the person who comes up with these so called days) - not really sure what we are suppose to do on National Christmas Tree Day

Yes sadly this is now the 'norm' for the BBC to do this. BBC Two on the other hand is improving on Bank Holidays since the removal of CBBC from BBC Two's morning schedules at the end of 2012. We now have a morning film and an afternoon film on BBC Two on most Bank Holidays.

Perhaps this is the BBC's daytime controller's way of thinking. Put all the Bank Holiday entertainment (or some of it) on BBC Two and stick to a business as usual schedule on BBC One.

Usually the organization representing the companies in that industry choose a day and get a PR company to send out mailshots to everyone in their database, offering to make representatives available for TV and radio shows

Editors with a few minutes available (unusual at this time of year as every celebrity with a book, tv-show, dvd out for Xmas has their PR people banging on your door

If you want a guaranteed half hour spot on a show release something in Jan

It does make you wonder why the BBC behaves like this. I mean I'm sure there are lots of intelligent people who have to sit down and work this all out - they're not keeping the schedule the same just because someone can't be bothered to make a few changes. Maybe they have a set number of programmes in each series and all these things are lined up to start on a Monday in January and finish on a Friday in March (for example).

almost all of these day time shows are 5/10/15.20 on a series so they will say we have to start it on a Monday or they wont fit in their slots - but makes you wonder whats going to happen next year or 2018 when New years Day is on a Monday!

The morning will be usual daytime fodder and a film will air in the afternoon. But NYD isn't on a Monday in 2018. It's on a Tuesday so the BBC will still be in festive mode.

The last time NTD fell on a Monday was in 2007 and this was BBC One's schedule..

BBC One - New Year's Day 2007

6.00am Breakfast.
9.00am What I'd Really Like to Do.
9.45am New Year, New You - City Hospital Special.
10.45am To Buy or Not to Buy.
11.15am Bargain Hunt.
12.00pm Cash in the Attic.
12.50pm BBC News.
1.05pm Keeping Up Appearances.
1.35pm Diagnosis Murder.
2.20pm FILM: Seabiscuit.
4.30pm BBC News.
4.50pm The Sarah Jane Adventures.
5.50pm Expedition Borneo.
6.20pm The Wind in the Willows.

Then on Tues 2nd January it was back to a normal daytime schedule

But interesting that it seems the BBC are showing these daytime fillers to ensure they complete the series run on a Monday-Friday basis. You'd think though, even if they really must show them on a Bank Holiday, that they would show at least 1 movie.
