Are these for the first six months of 2016? - In answer to this

Media Guardian stated that the Radio Times is down just under 9% for the first 6 months of 2016 which is higher than year on year. No exact figures sold or other titles were mentioned but based on this that would suggest that the magazine is keeping hold of subscribers, but due to the price rise casual readers have gone elsewhere, probably newspaper freebies or on screen guides. - apologies but I don't know how to put other quotes in the dark boxes, any advice on how to do this appreciated ”

I might be wrong but I think the decline is a generational thing. Younger people have less need for tv guides - they watch netflix/youtube/iplayer ondemand. And they are used to using electronic guides on the tv/boxes themselves. I suspect that if you looked at demographics the average age of a tv guide buyer is easily above 55.

With regards to the RT subscriptions - are they still throwing ridiculous offers at people? I took one of these out a few years ago and paid £1 for 13 issues (including the christmas double issue) but I barely skim red the magazines. These days I only have freeview and no recording device so the guide would be of even less value to me.

3 Days to go until this year's New series of Quiz Questions!

That's right! Just three more days until the Countdown Quiz starts. During the course of the day (Thursday 18th August) I will be posting the full rules and details as to the prizes that can be won.

I will also be revealing details of the new lifeline tool that will be available to those who require a clue to any two questions. Plus, big changes to the tie-break scenario that will make finding an overall winner more exciting and less certain until the very end!

I hope that as many of you as possible will take part in the quiz as this year I believe that with the prizes on offer, I have made it more worthwhile to join in. So, look out for the complete set of rules that will be posted very soon............

The Digital Spy RT/Christmas Countdown Quiz 2016:

Rules:

1) Each week a series of questions will appear. There will be 10 questions each week except the fifth week when 16 questions will be posted. There will be 86 questions in total. All questions will be posted each Sunday before noon between 21st August and 9th October, unless notified in advance.

2) Each player will receive 1 point for each correct question. Where a question requires a more specific answer, consideration will be given to the player(s) who provides a more detailed response and in this instance this player will receive the full point and others who give less specific responses will receive 0.5 points. It will be pointed out clearly during the week's where such questions arise and as such scores will be awarded accordingly. The maximum number of points available is 86.

3) All players who requested questions for any particular week in advance due to holidays or any other reason, will know their score at the same time as everybody else for that particular week. Points will be carried forward and added together each week and a running score will be posted for each player. If you have requested advance questions and have already answered them, you can not answer them again during the week that they officially appear. If you do not answer the questions in advance but do answer them in the week they officially appear, you will forfeit two points due to the fact that you will have already seen the questions long before anyone else.

4) This year players can have two lifelines each. These are in the form of “White Card” requests. A “White Card” request gives each player an opportunity to ask me for a free clue for up to two questions maximum during the 8 week run. If you require a third (or more), then a clue will be provided for the price of 1 point per clue. So, use your “White Card” lifelines wisely. Points will be deducted from your score accordingly. For fairness, if you request a White Card lifeline, no other player will know (unless you are competing in a tie-break scenario at the end of the 8 week run) as it will be done via Personal Message. I will monitor your lifelines and inform you when they have expired. Please note: If you do not take advantage of your lifelines, you are not entitled for them to be carried over or swapped for points. But, Lifeline usage may affect your overall status at the end of the 8 week run. (See point 6 for details).

5) There are four prize tiers this year. The First Prize is a selection of four items: A Poster of a Classic 1950's Radio Times Christmas Cover, A Radio Times Tea Towel featuring the 1977 Christmas Radio Times Cover, A Stainless Steel Keyring engraved with “Radio Times Quiz Winner 2016” with a 2017 Radio Times Poster Wall Calendar and a boxed set of 101 Radio Times Classic Cover Postcards.
The Second Prize is a Radio Times Poster Wall Calendar for 2017 and a Radio Times Tea Towel featuring the 1977 Christmas Cover. The Third Prize is a Radio Times Poster Wall Calendar for 2017. This year, there is also the chance for ALL players who scored over 70 points to win a prize.
All 70+ Scorers (apart from the three prize winners) will be put into a draw and a name drawn randomly. This person will also win a Radio Times Poster Wall Calendar for 2017. The draw will be carried out after the three Quiz Winners are confirmed and the prize draw winner will be announced publicly on the Countdown Thread. All prizes are brand new and will be posted out to you via second class “Signed For”. Please allow 10 days for delivery and I will notify all winners when their prize has been despatched.

6) In the event of a tie there are two ways to determine the overall winner. The player who used less White Card Lifelines will supercede the player who used both or more. So, if you score 86 points and used 1 lifeline, you would either lose to the player who also scored 86 but who used none, or beat the player who used both. This information will only be revealed at the end of the 8 week run, and only if a tie break of two or more players with the highest equal score is required to determine the outright winner. If however, all players in the tie-break have used none, one or both equally, then the winner will be decided by a Screen Test Tiebreak. A youtube clip will be posted and after you've watched it, five questions will follow . The first player to post their answers publicly – before 3pm on 16th October, will be declared Quiz Champion for 2016. A tie-break conclusion is likely to determine the second and third place winners aswell as the overall winner.

7) I will accept one answer per question per player. You are unable to change your answers once you have posted them to me. PLEASE DO NOT POST ANSWERS PUBLICLY. All answers must be posted to myself by Personal Message by midnight the following Saturday. Any entry received after the deadline for any week will be discounted and your score will be affected as a result. Any player who posts answers publicly will be disqualified from the Quiz as it spoils things for other players and undermines the quiz in general.

8) As usual, it is up to you how you find out your answers and which websites and research facilities you use. But, as in previous years, one site that is recommended is http://ukchristmastv.weebly.com/

9) That's it. Those are the rules. Any queries or if you spot a mistake or are just trying to get clarity on a question, then please do not hesitate to send me a personal message. I will always ask you for confirmation before implementing a White Card Lifeline. So, I hope you enjoy the quiz and, Good luck!

I wonder if any Olympians would be up for it this year though? What about Sir Chris Hoy?

Thanks for the comments about the rules - hope they don't come across as too strict or complicated, I just thought it would be more exciting if players who were on equal points had less certainty of the final outcome! It keeps everyone's chances more open. Yes, I'm keen to get started, I've spent half a year devising questions, coming up with new ideas and gathering prizes so it would be nice to finally get it under way. By the way, I have also purchased prizes for NEXT YEAR'S quiz - should there be one, so I have been very busy!

Yes, the summer is dragging. I'm not a fan of the Summer and I don't cope well in hot weather. Contrary to what some people believe, since early July, the weather in the South of England has been dry, warm to very warm or hot. There has been no rain since June and August, like January, goes on forever!

I reckon the BBC Christmas Press pack will be published on Tuesday November 22nd.

Also next year is the 10th anniversary of this thread starting

I visited Cardiff in June. I wanted to go to the Doctor Who Experience - which is excellent. I spent a very soggy day running from building to building and escaping the rain by having a coffee in the Millennium Centre. I wanted to go to Barry Island too to see the place made famous by Gavin and Stacey, but the rain just bucketed down on that day too so I spent the day visiting St. David's Shopping Centre in Cardiff City Centre! I think I saw the oldy worldy alley/street where A Midsummer Night's dream and the Raven episodes of Doctor Who were filmed, but I can't be sure. The only rain I've encountered this summer was when I visited your lovely country! But, thankfully, gale force winds and rain are forecast for Friday and Saturday here too! Roll on September!

The older I'm getting, the less interested in films I'm becoming! I would prefer the "Peter Pan Goes Wrong" on Christmas afternoon than another bloody cartoon!

Nothing announced yet, but I'd rather have that than another depressing episode of EastEnders on Christmas Day!

If BBC have Frozen then that will definetely be on Christmas Day. If they don't then Maleficent could break the animated stronghold for Christmas afternoon. But I think Channel Four will premiere Frozen - I just have a hunch, and as such Monsters University will possibly be this year's Christmas film. The BBC tend to only buy family movies these days. Live action comedies are largely reserved for the film channels.

As he manages to pull in between 4 and 5 million viewers for late night Christmas Day, I'd say it is highly probable that he will have a Christmas night special. I actually enjoy his shows.

In fact, a customer was in my shop saying he'd won tickets to see Michael McIntyre's Show being recorded but as I was really busy I couldn't elaborate on the conversation. Of course it could have been a new series of the Big Show or a Christmas Special, but I guess we'll find out in due course. A lot of announcements are usually made in the Edinburgh TV Festival this coming week. Will ITV get Channel of the Year? That will be an interesting choice if it does!

Looking forward to the quiz starting Sunday. Can't wait for this month to be over never been a fan of the Summer to be honest. I think one of the films premiered on BBC One this year could be Guardians Of The Galaxy if it hasn't already? maybe New Years Day.
