This is the first time we have had so many players and the first time so many people have scored top whack! I am currently considering making the tie-break a semi-final for the top scorers - with a prize, followed by another tie break. But this could obviously cause a bit of chaos with it all happening on October 16th. This is due to the amount of entries this year. I'm not complaining by the way, I'm thrilled to bits that so many wanted to join in. I will put a proposal to the thread so those who are potential winners can decide and determine whether a semi-final is necessary. Don't worry though, I will try and make it as fair as possible.

I will keep you posted. I'm just annoyed that I clearly didn't make the questions hard enough!

This is our current leaders board this year. All on 40 points.

I was thinking that the semi-final would eliminate five from the final tie-break with the remaining four competing in the final tie-break to determine the first, second and third places. The six (five plus the one who lost out in the semi-final) who were eliminated would then be put into an additional draw to win a Radio Times Christmas Cover Fridge Magnet. What do you think?”

I daresay some whittling down via a semifinal would be OK for me. It would be a shame to have the final result come down to the mercy of, say, nine people on a timed question... Those things always make me a bit nervous, as I bet some people are naturally better at the high speed keyboard bashing than others! Although I guess your semifinal would be timed too?

The Semi-Final would require everyone watching a videoclip. There would then be 5 questions based on that videoclip and the first four to respond with the most correct answers would go through to the tie-break.

However, to make it fair, I wouldn't make it a speed, rush to win round. I would post the questions and video at say 10.30am on the 16th, but there would be a two hour window to get your answers to me. The video lasts 14 minutes so I would state that you have to watch the video before posting your answers. I wouldn't expect anyone to get their answers to me before 20 minutes. There would also be 1 really difficult question, not related to the video, to answer aswell. It would need researching.

At 12.30pm, I would declare the four going into the tie-break with a 30 minute window to get your answers to me. But this time, by posting them publicly so we can all see who was first. There obviously would be an element of speed attached but moreso in the final tie-break than in the semi-final.

Next week, any player unable to reach the 70 points required to gain entry to the draw at the end of the Quiz will be removed from the scoreboard! I know that sounds harsh, but it's a Quiz with prizes and the nearer we get to the end of the Quiz, the more it becomes about focusing on the potential winners.

Of course, you are all still welcome to join in and I will still calculate your score. It is meant to be fun and I wouldn't anyone missing out if they wish to enter.

This week's 16 Questions will follow shortly.”

Thanks Wizzy!

I actually thought my wrong answer would be the boxing day comedy duo one of Smith and Jones not my Amsterdam answer for a different question!

I'm a bit confused though as you've indicated on the scoreboard that I got eight right answer's this week but in the PM you've sent me that I've just spotted you said I got 9 right?
Unless I'm misunderstanding what the different numbers on the board represent?

Anyway just thought I'd flag it up just incase.

Roll on next week! 😁

No, you are quite correct Hilda. My mistake. I will adjust it accordingly. My apologies. I appreciate it when folks bring mistakes to my attention. I do make mistakes from time to time. Your running score is 37.

Summary

Early indications suggest the coming winter may be significantly different to the last one. The combination of lower solar activity, a weak La Nina and an easterly QBO phase may favour a less cyclonic pattern and perhaps increase the risk of colder outbreaks.

Semi-Final Proposal

Due to the high number of posters in first position currently, I have been considering a Semi'Final if there are more than 6 people in first position at the end of week 7.

Here's how it would work.

Imagine there's 7 people on 76 points.

On Sunday October 9th, I will invite all leaders on equal points into a semi-final.
This will entail a videoclip with five questions about the clip. There will be an additional two questions not based on the clip but will need some research.
Each participant will have until the following Thursday, October 13th, to get their answers to me for the semi-final.

You will be scored for each correct answer. You will also be scored in accordance to how fast you posted your answers to me and these scores will be added to your final running total. .

For example:

There are seven semi-finalists.

The semi-finalists are Tom, Dick, Harry, Debbie, Sharon, Tracey and Bob.

Bob answered 5 questions correctly but posted his answers first. So he gets 7 points extra. This gives him 12 points.

Tracey scored 6 points for the Questions but was second with posting her answers so she also scores 12 points.

Tom got all seven questions correct but was third with posting his answers so he gets an additional 5 points which also gives him 12.

Sharon scored 7 for her answers but was fourth with posting which gives her an additional 4 points. Total is 11 points.

Harry scored 7 for his answers but 3 for the fact that he was the fifth to get his answers to me. This gives him 10 points.

Dick scored 6 for his answers and 2 for his posting position which gives him 8 points.

Debbie scored 7 for her answers but was last with her answers to me which gives her 1 extra point. She scores 8 in total.

This means that we have four people, Bob, Tracey, Tom and Sharon securing a position into the tie-break the following Sunday. The semi-final scores will be known to each poster by PM but will not be declared publicly until the final Scores are revealed on the 16th October. Your semi-final score will be added onto your final total and could affect your eligibility into taking part in the tie-break.

The four players will then enter a tie-break in the usual way and the first person to post their answer publicly will be the winner. And so on.

All semi-finalists should obviously post their week 8 answers to me too. You do not have to enter the semi-final, but if you don't then it might jeopardise your chances of winning.

What happens to the Semi-Finalists who didn't Qualify for the Tie-Break?

Well, four will go through to the tie break, which will likely determine the three winners. The person who is eliminated from the tie-break will get put into a draw along with all other non-tie-break semi-finalists, and one poster will win a Christmas Radio Times Fridge Magnet.

They also get put into the draw for the 70+ Prize draw along with all other players.

I can reveal that so far, no-one has used a lifeline.

Let me know what you think.

Just to clarify a point about the semi-final that I proposed above. Your semi-final points will NOT be added to your final score. They will be posted as seperate semi-final points.

The purpose of the semi-final is to get four people to enter the tie-break. Not to determine the overall winner. The winner(s) will be determined by the tie-break.

Well they may be money-hungry but don't forget the BBC then 'sells' Bake-Off to 196 territories around the world, that's just 6 less than Top Gear at it's height.

From what I've read, Top Gear generated £40m per year for the BBC. And whilst it may not generate that amount, if it only generated £20m a year that would mean the BBC would have needed to pay (in real terms) £5m per year to match the £75m - 3 year contract the production company wanted. This out of a budget of 3.7Billion pound a year.

This means the BBC was not willing to pay 0.0012% of it's budget on Bake-Off

So, with talk of loyalty, are the BBC being 'loyal' to it's licence payers?

Following on from my earlier post- the last time Christmas was on a Sunday, in 2011, both the BBC and ITV had near-normal schedules right up to Fri 23rd Dec and returned to near normal Monday 2nd Jan- so that year and so possibly this year we only get 1 week of festive programming rather than the usual 2.

Christmas 2011 was also the year of The Borrowers (Victoria Wood), The Royal Bodyguard (David Jason), and Jim'll Fix It with Shane Ritchie

Come on, Who bought the Green cover and who bought the red? And who bought both ?

They also said this for the August Bank Holiday:

Quote:
“This favours a very warm start to the Bank Holiday weekend in the south east but temperatures drop during Sunday and Monday.”

Monday was the best day of that weekend! Also: the weather the following week is unpredictable, never mind three *months* in advance.

Last night I posted the procedure for a semi-final. It wasn't definitive and is open for discussion. During the course of the day I have considered that a tie-break may be unnecessary and unfair. This means that the scores you score in the semi-final will now be added to your final score in week 8.

However, I will notify you as to how you scored with your answers, but will disclose the timings of when you posted your answers to me and the additional "timing score" on the last day - 16th October. This will keep everyone guessing and make the final week more exciting.

Here's an example:

Final Scoreboard

bob 10 - 86
harry 10 - 86
sam 10 - 86
trevor 10- 86
mary 10 - 86
june 10 - 86

Semi - Final Scoreboard

bob 4 - 6 (10)
harry 7 - 5 (12)
sam 7 - 1 (8)
trevor 6 - 3 (9)
mary 6 - 4 (10)
june 6 - 2 (8)

Final Winner's Scoreboard

bob 86 + 10 = 96
harry 86 + 12 = 98
sam 86 + 8 = 94
trevor 86 + 9 = 95
mary 86 + 10 = 96
june 86 + 8 = 94

Which means harry would be the quiz winner.
bob would be second because he got his answers to me quicker than mary.
mary would be third.

All other semi-finalists would then be put into a prize draw as mentioned previously.
If two players finish first on the same amount of points, then the player who sent their answers to me the quickest will be the winner.

If I'm honest, I prefer this system as it makes the overall winner more definitive and actually creates a valid purpose for the semi-final.

Now, it's up to you. Which system do you prefer? The one that was posted yesterday or the one that was pointed tonight? Yesterday's is A and today's is B.

Or, do you have an alternative idea? If you have, let me know.

You shouldn't have to make too much hard work for yourself, Wizzy. If lots of players end up equal on points at the top of the leaderboard, you could draw names out of the hat to decide the winner and the other prize-winners.

Thanks for your suggestion. I did consider names being drawn out of a hat, but I felt it was a bit unfair as everyone went to so much effort to get questions right. However, it's up to you guys how the winner is decided, and names from a hat is a new option that posters can agree upon. The other alternative of course, is the original plan to just have a tie-break and the fastest poster wins!

I would suggest drawing the winner from a hat. There may be many reasons why an individual cannot get an answer in quickest.

the only problem with the original plan is it may disadvantage those who may not be able to log on on a Sunday morning due to work or church etc or whenever so the hat thing is one way round it but we leave it to you

This is a good point, and another reason why I felt having a semi-final with a four day window to get answers to me.

Doing the semi-final, in my view, is fairer because all who want to win will take part. It also gives everyone an equal chance. It isn't any extra work because the tie-break questions are already devised, so doing a bit of additional scoring for a few minutes on a Thursday evening won't inconvenience me too much.

I will have a think and let you know by the end of the week. I am genuinely trying to make the end result as fair as possible and I wanted to avoid 9 people scrambvling around on a Sunday morning trying to post the quickest as it's a cruel way inwhich to lose. I also felt names being drawn from a hat is also slightly unfair as players who stuck with the Quiz throughout and scored top marks should have an equal chance to try and be the new champion on merit and not on the luck of the draw.

Please, though, keep your suggestions coming.
