Reading the synopsis for the Christmas episode, my first thought was "thank the lord Moffat is going soon!" Not eagerly anticipating this at all. One good thing, the fact it isn't set at Christmas is a saving grace, perhaps.

With half an hour to go until this week's deadline passes, and taking into consideration the results of the semi-final, I have decided to take the unusual step of posting the scores of the semi-finalists now.

I will list the total you scored in the quiz in the usual way, then your running total, then I will add your semi-final scores and then confirm your new running total thereafter.

Example:

Joe Bloggs 10 - 61 + 7 = 68

Tomorrow, when I reveal the answers, your new score will be posted singularly.

Example:

Joe Bloggs 68.

Hope that is simple to understand, it's late!

So, here we go:

Semi-Finalists New Running Totals: The Scores:

Hildaonpluto 10 –71 + 4 = 75
pedrok 10 – 72 + 5 = 77
theSweeney 10 – 74 + 5 = 79
brucie_bonus 10 – 75 + 5 = 80
JBO 10 – 76 + 5 = 81
smokeycat 10 – 76 + 6 = 82
altally 10– 75 + 7 = 82
marke09 10 – 76 + 7 = 83
yorkieUK 10 – 76 + 7 = 83
davads 10 – 76 + 8 = 84
Claires_dad 10 – 76 + 8 = 84

Remember, these scores may change drastically next Sunday once the scores are added for the speed inwhich you sent your answers to me. The highest score is 14. The lowest score is 4. But who scored what and what difference will it make to the final score?

Well, to find out if your score is affected, don't forget to enter for one final time once week 8's Questions are posted in the morning, and to look in next Sunday morning, the 16th, to find out who is the Quiz Champion 2017.

Welcome to the final week in this year's Quiz series. I really hope you have enjoyed it and thanks to all those who stuck it out to the bitter end! It is kind of a bittersweet moment, I have enjoyed running the Quiz, and as I said a couple of weeks ago, I will run it again next year, but I am also quietly pleased that this is the last week! I guess it's a symbol of "all things must end" and that there's a time for everything!

Anyway, here are the final week's Questions.

Week 8 Questions:

1. Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange starred in this Oscar winning comedy drama about a struggling actor who lands himself a role in a successful medical drama. It received its BBC1 premiere during Christmas 1986. What was it called?

2. Who pulled his Christmas Cracker on December 23rd 1986 on BBC1?

3. The Paris Opera Ballet featured in Rudolf Nureyev's new version of what fairytale that aired on Boxing Day 1987 on BBC2?

4. 'Bladerunners' was a documentary that aired originally in Omnibus but was repeated on Sunday December 29th 1991, about which famous sporting pair?

5. Which popular soap invited us to its Christmas Party in 2003?

6. In 2007, at Christmas, BBC2 showed a feature length documentary looking back at five series' of which popular reptilian sounding show?

7. “When human beings started planting fields, the robin took up mankind as a companion” was said by whom in the 2013 Christmas issue of the RT?

8. In the 2014 issue of RT, who declared that “It's hard to stay true to yourself”?

9. Which family drama on BBC1 did the article “Flushed with Success” refer to in the 2015 issue of the RT?

10. FINAL QUESTION: What year did Victor Meldrew go to the Algarve?

So, there you go. That's your lot!
Answers to me in the usual way - by midnight this coming Saturday (15th October) and good luck! Remember, there are secret scores to be added next Sunday, the scores you received in the semi-final for quickness! So, these Questions could be vital to your final score.

Good luck!

Prize details will be posted mid-week.

As this year's Quiz ends next Sunday, I am looking at new ways of running the Quiz next year. I would love ideas and comments as to how it can be improved and as such I am asking you for your ideas and suggestions. What sorts of questions would you like? How would you like it scored? How long should it run for?

Here are my ideas for the Quiz next year, and the changes I think it needs:

1) The Quiz will run for six weeks only and the 7th week should be the week when the winner's are revealed. I do get the feeling that 8 weeks is perhaps too long and 6 weeks is about right.

2) Each week will be a prize draw week. Perhaps the person with the highest score each week wins a prize.

3) Scoring: This is the bit that needs the most changes. So here's what I've come up with:

For each correct answer you get 2 ;points. Partial answers get 1 point.
The first person to post their answers to me gets 3 extra points.
If you post on a Sunday and are after the first person, you get 2 points.
All other posters get a loyalty point each week they enter.

It sounds complicated but is totally easy to manage.

4) Themed weeks to make a return.

Those are my initial ideas. What do you think? I thought I'd give everyone until 31st January 2017 to give me some ideas, you can post it publicly in this thread or the forthcoming 2017 thread, and then we can have a discussion in early February once all the ideas are in.

In the meantime, don't forget to get your answers to me for this week by this coming Saturday.

I think a weekly prize would attract more casual entrants. A 6, or 8, week quiz is a big commitment for everyone.

How long would you think would be reasonable inwhich to commit? Also, you suggested a bye week earlier this year, how could that be implemented to ensure that those who wanted to commit but couldn't for a week are still scored?

Would casual entrants be better as it could theoretically make the Quiz more open and the leaders less dominant?

I like the idea of a prize each week, though it would probably be a draw most weeks. 8 weeks is fine for me, but perhaps to encourage more to enter, maybe each week should be self-contained, rather than a grand prize at the end.

I do think points for speediness are a good idea as well, which may help avoid so many draws.

Interesting idea. I wonder if it would be considered a lesser incentive for regulars to enter each week if there wasn't a grand prize at the end? I think the idea of becoming Quiz Champion at the end is a nice thing to become. But, it needs to be less plain sailing to become it which is why I thought of changing the scoring system.

How about having each week contained as you suggest and the winners of each week fighting it out for Quiz champion in the last week?

Perhaps run the quiz over 6 or 8 week but dont publicise until that particular week that it will be a prize draw for those who come top and perhaps for the last week have the grand prizes but then for each week you enter you get a ticket for a big draw at the end of the quiz for some other prizes like a raffle (so if you enter the quiz each week you will get 8 chances to win something - if you only u enter 6 times you get 6 chances etc )

Also have a speed round one week

I like your tickets to win idea. A sort of loyalty scheme, the more you enter, the more chances you get to win. I think that could work.

Keep your ideas coming everyone.

Having 6 weekly winners could work, with them all being up for the grand prize,

You could always do a week 7, but just let the weekly winners, take part.

A nice addition this year for me has been the youtube element of the quiz, while looking at the link wizzywick has given, I have from that then clicked on other links, and enjoyed it.

We in this country have always been fascinated in Christmas Number 1s, could Christmas music and Programmes related to that, be done.

All in all Wizzywick does a great job, hope there final year, as quiz organiser could go down with a storm,

BIB: An announcement about next year's Quiz will be made next week - but I can say that this year, 2016, is MY last time doing the Quiz.................at least in its current form.

Thanks for your suggestion jazzy, I think a Christmas Number 1 round is a good idea.

Long time lurker, occasional poster.
Never entered the quiz, but always read it and so I hope it is okay to add my two'penneth.
The reason I haven't entered is because, IMHO, it starts to early. August (the end of I know) is when the sun is still shining, its summer, and I haven't even taken my summer holiday yet. Of course I know this is a Christmas thread and enjoy the read, but partaking in the summer (in a Christmas related quiz) just feels....wrong.
Not a criticism at all but I wonder if it started even mid/end September for 6 weeks when the seasons start to change then it may be engaging for more people.
I like the idea of the weekly winners "facing off" at the end for a grand prize or whatever. Only thing that strikes me is if you have the same weekly winner for say 4 weeks of those 6 (for example) then the "grand finale" could be a bit of damp squid with only 2-3 people involved. That's assuming that winning one week would not preclude you from having the opportunity to win a different week, because if that was the case then people may feel they have less incentive to enter after they have already won on any particular week.
Hope that is helpful.
