But with everything the BBC has announced so far there is not a lot of time for them to have films and most will have been seen before on other providers

Its is 94 minutes long.”

Very much doubt it will be suited to that slot.

I think it's more of a teatime BBC2 offering.

So there is only three days between the draft schedule being finalised and the Xmas RT being available in the shops? That seems a hell of a turnaround in printing or have I got that wrong?

It only got it's UK cinema release in December 2013 so that would have been a neat trick!

Yeah they were dire, lots of CG animated kids movies during the daytime but not much for grown ups. I'd like to go back to the days of a big movie premiere on Christmas night, something like say Guardians Of The Galaxy for this year, but I don't think that will ever happen.

Really like that one. Think it pushes Morrison's into 2nd place for me, Aldi 3rd.

Not sure if everyone knew, but Sky added the John Lewis ad to the homepage Top Picks On Demand yesterday. Still there today with a couple of other related short progs;
Making Buster the Boxer - Find out more about how John Lewis made Buster the Boxer.
Garden friends - 'Patrick Aryee reveals the fun way you can turn your garden into an oasis for garden wildlife'
Assume John Lewis paid for it to be there.
Sky added their Sky Cinema ad onto each of those..

The Australian Aldi one, not sure what to say! ...

In a magazine called Simply Christmas they go behind the scenes at the RT and it says that during November where usually they have 5 days to do each issue they have 3 to do them (thats why they start to come out early) so they then can concentrate on the Christmas issue. Listings for this issue are done as soon as the channels announce whats on (some satellite channels have already released their schedules). With technology now they are able then to just copy and paste the listings into the right slots when finalised (usually there are not many changes in the draft to the final) and off to the printers - which takes 5 days to print all 2 million copies in six different regional issues - this is why some get them early.

The TV listing mags will have a good idea as to what is on so they get invited to preview tapes and get interviews and photos with stars of shows

Last year I asked why we in Wales were always the last to get them and one reason they gave was that S4C are late in finalising their schedules

Looking forward to the BBC1 idents & trails. Wonder what the theme is this year. Would love to see some of the older retro ones. Mix them up and have different old ones throughout the day. Anyone got any past faves?

The late 80's are the ones I remember the most ... 87 in particular. I loved the David Tennant one and the large snowball. They always seem to pick good but obsure music too like Badly Drawn Boy

I was assuming the Christmas double issues would cover the fortnight beginning December 24th so there wouldn't need to be an issue released during the holiday period then and it would cover the new years eve/day schedules, so that's a bit of a surprise. Probably a sneaky way to make us buy two copies of the TV guide of your choice if you want all the holiday programming.

If I've checked correctly there has only been one 24th December - 6th January double issue and that was in 1977.

The last 5 double issues where Christmas Day was on a Sunday have been 17-30 December issues

1983, 1988*, 1994, 2005, 2011

So it's not a new thing not to cover New Year in the double issue!

(Although I believe the 1988 issue had some details of New Year but not full listings)

Thanks for sharing this, I like learning about what goes on behind-the-scenes.

Normally we would have two years on the trot of having no New Year details in the Christmas issue (18 - 31 and 17 - 30) but the way the calendar is this time round its just one year so the next time it happens will be 2021

Christmas Kitchen will start on Monday 5th December in the mornings along with Christmas City

Christmas City airs at 9.15 so Christmas Kitchen will probably be at 11am

The meaning of this is that they will be finished by w/c 19 December so we just could have a week of films and specials during daytime

Cor Blimey! We havent had a 16-29 Dec issue since 1996 ? i think . Usually we get a 23 Dec - 5 Jan.

What would you prefer ?

I remember writing to RT that year, saying i was dissapointed theyd opted for a 16-29 Dec issue. They sent me a voucher for a free copy of RT
