I've been watching back on leona'a old performances and noticed after like 2012 when leona started to gain weight, her voice also started to get worse. Could her weight affect her voice (probably a stupid question)? I just find it interesting that her best years IMO 2011/12, was when she was at her slimist and in good shape. And then in 2013/14 her voice was at its weakest but she was also at her heaviest. And now she's loss some weight and her voice is improving. Could this be related. And before people jump down my throat, I don't think leona is fat. I think she is beautiful no matter what her weight is. But she has gained weight and loss some of it over the past few years around the same time her voice began to get worse.

I was really happy Louisa won but she's not in the same league to Leona. You listen to their winner's singles back to back and it really hits you: how distinctive Leona's voice is in comparison and how much her voice has tone and light and shade. I wish Louisa the very best and its not in her interests to be compared to Leona. She will go on her own path. And: Leona is still at the start of hers. So much to look forward to!

Well if there talking about how Leona is selling in 2015, FUMF #51, Thunder and I Am not even charting and I Am the album selling less then 15k in 3 months I think anyone could sell more than Leona at the moment or are we still living in her 2007 success bubble? Louisa wont top Spirit era sells NOBODY would well unless your Adele, But if the papers talking about her being bigger than Leona is now its not hard is it? I could probably sell more than 15k of an album in 3 months and am not a singer

Leona is almost 10 years. And I bet if Leona was on telly every week now she could shifts some more copies too. |

Eventhough there have been more factors that made her voice how it was in 2011 (the tour, not as much stress as later on I guess and even the nosejob maybe) I believe feeling completely satisfied in body is the key for fully opening the voice for Leona. |

That'll bring it very close, but not quite to the 200k mark. But it could do a bit better than I'm predicting if airplay really starts to pick up the coming week or so and if it gets reduced to 59p perhaps? Streaming should help it out a bunch Christmas week.

I wonder if Leona could be persuaded to sing OMS on tour?
It's such a great singalong song. It is such a shame that it's seasonal. |

Yeah but it didn't seem progressive. Leona was incredible doing hurt in Dec 2011 but by mid 2012, when she was beginning to gain weight, you could all ready hear her voice straining. I know it's not the only cause but I just don't know what made that happen to her voice so quick. I know I sound like a negative Nancy but I'd just love to find out why her voice is still strained. I know it's starting to get better and a lot of you said that her voice became strained from overusing it but if that's the case, will her voice get worse when she tours?

That duet with Ben was so awful, tarnished Leona's image /:.
So many people are saying she can't sing well anymore ugh. |

She overused her voice, it's not to do with her gaining weight. She's gained and lost weight a bunch of times, including before the Echo era she gained a bunch of weight and then lost it in time for the era. She had some really good vocal moments in 2012 still despite being "bigger" than what she used to be.
Late 2012-late 2013 she was constantly using her voice, for live performances/touring/recording and that took its toll on her. That's the reason her voice hit a low point. |

Reference Leona's weight gain, I don't know if it's related. It sounds like the difficulties are more related to a nodule or something (I'm not a vocal coach so it's just a guess). It's interesting though. I saw Kelly Clarkson the other day on TV and she's put on some weight and she still sounded great. Like you say, it could be a confidence thing. I don't think her voice will necessarily get into the shape it was, though I hope it will. If it doesn't, I hope she just does good songs that suit her current ability.
EDIT: In reference to Envoirment's post, I think Leona has a delicate voice and what she does with it is significant for how light it is. I saw an article the other day which showed a study that demonstrated that lower voices (altos, baritones/bass etc) are typically a lot more powerful and she throws some power out for her voice classification. Either way, I hope she just finds a sweet spot with whatever her voice ends up being. |

In terms of nodules, Leona doesn't have nodules. She wouldn't be able to hit the notes she does on the live performances of "Thunder" so well if she did or keep up such a steady/fast vibrato as she showed on her sustained G#4 on "Run" on X-factor. Not to mention a bunch of other vocals wouldn't have been as good/possible if she had nodules. She tired her voice out (similar to tiring a muscle out) and she's realised that and has become more careful with her voice and is trying to build it back up again. She's managed to improve it in some areas (upper belts for instance), but still has a bit to go in terms of regaining the resonance in her lower-mid voice (although it's almost there). The tour should help her improve and as long as she continues to get vocal coaching, she should improve and better herself. Especially with the new found confidence being on Island/Def Jam's label has given her.

We all know how Simon lives to manipulate things - maybe he set up the performance of Leona and Ben- in spite, aiming to sabotage her
Or maybe he actually thought it would be a good pairing and helping Leona out. Going with the former |

The I Am tour should strengthen her voice if everything goes well and she makes sure to get plenty of vocal rest before and after (a week or so).

Leona currently doesn't have nodules, as Envoirment said, she wouldn't be able to hit some of the higher notes and you would definitely be able to hear it in her speaking voice. Having said that, she could have had them around 2012 and had surgery to remove them, leaving her voice in the more fragile state that it is in now. I don't think this is the case though.

I hope her voice gets better soon. I don't care if she can't hit the high notes anymore. I would just love her able to sing comfortably. For the last few years you can really see with her facial expressions how much she struggles and how painful it is for her. it's so uncomfortable to watch. I can only imagine how much pressure there is on her. Whenever she is being interviewed or introduced, they always talk about her powerhouse vocals and I'd say it puts so much pressure on her to live up to her reputation when she performs.

You cant sabotage someone by offering a slot on a popular show
![]() Even if the decision for the duet wasn't right because Ben and Leona was never meant to happen, Leona could just smash her parts but she wasn't at her best either. She looked super nervous, I wish she had a slot for a solo performance so she could redeem herself. There's no way her weight effected her voice, it's not that she gained tones lmao. She just goes for slim --> curvy and backwards. I am pretty sure it was the illness and the fact that she strained her voice during the first two eras ( maybe the nose job played a part too because her vocals sound nasal lately ) I dont know how to feel about the tour at this moment, I want her to come out at these stages and slay everyone but a part of me worries that it may harm her voice more? |

Like I say, I'm not a vocal coach so I have no way of diagnosing the problem. Do you know of anyone who's had some vocal issues like Leona and has got back to full health by the way? I'm not a big follower of big singers so I'm not too sure. I know Hayley of Paramore for me (I have to make it clear, I don't listen to them now) is probably the best if not one of the best singers around and she had problems and came back but they were never middle range issues. She just sounded hoarse but she hit all the notes.
Then there's Adele/Sam Smith/Megahn Trainor/Lead singer of Imagine dragons and many more who had to undergo vocal surgery due to damage (thankfully Leona hasn't had that happen to her!). They've all been able to recover their voices. Of course physical and mental health are important factors in singing - singers who are under a lot of stress or who are physically unfit may struggle to sing or sing for long periods of time. I think Leona shouldn't have issue with getting her voice in tip top form as it doesn't appear she has nodules or anything that requires surgery. I think the key thing for Leona is confidence, vocal rest and improving vocal techniqu. Her technique has changed somewhat which is one reason why she isn't as resonant anymore - she doesn't open her mouth as wide anymore and puts tension in her lower jaw. She also sometimes resonates in the nasal cavitiy rather than the mask, which reduces resonance - essentially "lazy" singing to a certain extent, but it could be that Leona's getting back into the swing of things now after being knocked back a bit in 2012/2013. The tour should help her improve any "laziness" in regards to her technique. The main things Leona needs to do is: - Resonate in the mask and don't place any tension in her lower jaw - Increase her confidence in her voice - which appears to be happening with her over the top ending of "Thunder" she's done and just general messing around with her voice. - Keep her larynx in a neutral position - she still pulls it up sometimes when belting higher, although she doesn't do it as much anymore and pushes it down sometimes when hitting low notes. I think overall Leona's voice is in a good place to be strengthened and improved upon in the coming months - Leona just has to make sure she does all she can to do that! And it certainly looks like she's trying.
