It's most likely Def Jam will take over now. When you have global deals like Leona's, one label is usually the decision maker and the other follows & distributes. When they negotiate her new deal in the UK I'm sure Def Jam will have influence in the contract.

It's sad the UK media are really going to town with her being dropped, it's sh*t for her public image. This is her chance now to blow everyone away when she starts Cats and hopefully comes back with a big single next year.

Oh listen, I'm not an expert. That was just my assumption, because that's where they are based. But, I think they would have to partner with another foreign label to distribute and promote her internationally. That's why it was DefJam/Island.

BTW, does anyone know who was the lead label in that combination. Did Def/Jam show interest first or was it Island?

If the album had sold 150k/300k etc instead of 20k and she'd gotten a couple of top 40 singles, I doubt today's news would have happened. ”

Of course, it's about sales. I would go further, it's 100% of the reason.

I would not say one story in the Sun is the media going "wild" about Leona being dropped by Island. Doubt most people (except Steve Brookstein) really are aware of it.

I really can't wait for July when Leona starts a new chapter with Cats. And who knows if she's a hit with it (and even gets a Tony as Best Supporting Actress in a Musical next year), this could be a whole new career for her.

LOL

The collabs are Def Jam where she's still signed too. But I do think that the fact Nicola is on board, someone who has managed lots of artists, they might have plans. I don't think she'd be on board for the sake of it. We'll see.
Nicola has either way more experience, I don't think Sarah managed an artist before Leona

There's news coming either way, I think it's music related.

Really dislike this thread when theres "bad" news and fans attack other fans with different opinions, If you don't like someones opinion just don't comment on it makes the thread so unpleasant to read fans against eachother.

Thanks for all the info Soe, This thread would actually be nothing without you.

I can't say I am too bothered Island have dropped her they was worst than Syco I said many times I think I prefer Syco to these and that says ALOT, I didn't ever like "I Am" album I just really hated everything about it I don't think I truly liked one song on the album and as a Leona fan that was heartbreaking that for once I couldn't enjoy her work so moving ahead I hope she goes with writers that work for her Ryan T etc, I know most of you enjoyed I Am and I was very honest about it from the beginning saying I didn't got a lot of stick for it but I was honest haha!

If there's any "Big" news while am not posting will someone DM me so I don't have to look through pages etc I'd really appreciate it

Thanks soe for all the info!

I'm not sad by any of this tbh. Leona is happy and staying true to Herself, and reading what soe wrote gives me a lot of respect for her. She wanted to keep ties with syco because all those songs are her hard work and emotions. The fact that the promo mismanagement is the main reason behind I am not doing as well as it could, rather than people not connecting with it is kind of a good thing.

I'm just a glad that leona is still making music and doing INCREDIBLE things that a lot of people would dream of. Leona wanted music to be her life as well as her career and that's what it is. The fact Bleeding love and spirit were huge and I am not so much doesn't mean leona is a flop. music is about more than just sales

Thanks for the info Soe (as per usual). No one is really an 'expert' on how labels work unless they work for them in anyway so all these rumours are nothing but baseless claims until we get official information about it.

At the end of the day it is a job for both parties Leona and Island and they have to agree on how her career should pan out. And just like normal jobs if there's no connection between them then it's best to discuss this as soon as possible and resolve any issues. On personal levels the relationship Leona had with Seb and Sarah etc clearly wasn't as ideal as anyone want it to be including themselves hence the quick end to their business ties.

So it's good that they decided to agree on more suitable options for each other including parting with each other as soon as possible but still preserve good relations in the end. At least they didn't decide to continue to drag this long like Syco did and end up with even a messier situation. Just glad that Def jam is still on board and collabs etc

That's just how I look at this

@Soe: Do we know if Leona had a multi-album deal at Def Jam versus a one album deal at Island?

I can't find her anywhere on the DJ website.

So has someone said that Simon has allowed Leona to keep royalty rights to her performances while she was signed to the Syco label? That was pretty generous. As I always understood it, if you a leave a label, all your royalty rights revert to the label.

Nicola was originally with Simon's Modest Management wasn't she? Do you know who else she managed there? And after she left them who has she managed? It would be interesting to know her resume, so we'd have a better idea of what she can do for Leona.

That's rubbish. Leona still gets royalities from all her songs. This has been explained before.

It wasn't Simon's Modest Management, he doesn't own it, they are a stand alone company that Syco partnered with for X Factor acts that is it.

X Factor contestants no longer sign with them, presumably as Syco eventually realised they were a shit company.

Guys Nicola no longer works at Global, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

She has moved to Red Light Management, Leona's current management. Oh **** that is disapointing.

Thank you Soe, thank goodness we have you.

I feel very sad that Leona is getting bad press again. The media always focus on the negatives. Island is no great loss. Def Jam has put in a lot of effort and I have faith in that. I feel very optimistic for the future for Leona. Her vocals are back on track, the I Am tour was amazing and so much love shown from the audiences. Nicola is back, there are still the collabs and of course Cats. I feel that Leona's career is far from over.

Who would have thought they would be such dicks at Island. They got album for free!!! (and not a bad one at all I dare to say) They only paied Egg White, TMS and Diane Warren I assume and that's it! Having saved such huge amount of studio money one would've thought they would actually spend more on promo, but instead they pull out with such shit like Leona paying her own band or whatever? What the actual ****?
And also that idea of giving up rights for all her previous work? Just why?

Oh god, this is really ****ed up

Anyways, thank you for sharing Soe

I'm not really sad tbh. It was quite clear there was no movement with Island for a while now.

Thank god for Def Jam and her US career, which is now bigger than her UK one tbh

It's better that Leona is away from Island given what they wanted her to do... I wouldn't even be opposed to her returning to SYCO and trying a comeback. Perhaps get her to perform "Ave Maria" on the X-factor final as a Christmas performance to get buzz around her again?

She's working with Ryan Tedder which is great as well. There's a lot of positive things happening around Leona and imagine if she gets nominated for and wins a Tony award next year? I really have my fingers crossed she does!

I wouldn't want her to go back to Syco but their would be one positive. Simon taking her back would mean he would need to prove he can 'make her' again, so she might actually get money pumped into her and get hooked up with good producers and get decent promo spots.

But I'd rather she try and sign with another Universal label and let Def Jam take control.

How do Tony Awards nominations come about? Do you submit nominations and the judges come and see the shows, as with Leona only doing 4 months is there really enough time for it to happen for her because I really don't want her to hang around any longer than the current contract.

Why would you want her to go back to Syco.. like do you not realise she would old news after a few months? Especially if she flopped. Not to mention the press would have a field day and she'd look like an idiot for going back. The label would put her on hold and Leona would once again get lost in the shuffle in a favour of Louisa Johnson, Fleur East, Ella Henderson or whoever they sign next. She'd go back to recording covers and be wheeled out for her annual X-Factor performance.

Leona's career needs to move forward, not backwards.

Just a quick question to see if anyone knows, what was the reason Leona left Faculty Management and signed to Red Light? I personally though Faculty had really proved themselves during CWL.

4 months should be plenty of time to get a nomination. I have a feeling that Leona will extend her contract to early 2017 though. I don't mind as she could release an album in Q4 2017 - I don't believe it will be busy as most major artists are releasing/have released albums this year (Beyoncé/Rihanna/Lady Gaga/Katy Perry/Justin Bieber etc). Q4 generally has the best promotional spots and if done right she can shift a lot of units despite lower chart positions (CWL went gold in about 4 weeks despite peaking outside the top 10).

I don't see any harm in her extending her contract for cats, especially if the show gets good reviews. I'm sure she'll have a lot of inspiration for the next album from living in New York and once the show is finished I'm sure Leona will find recording an album and putting it together quite easy. Echo only took about 9 months for Leona to record? Given that she's already had studio sessions last year, a bunch this year and more time to record this year/next year I don't think it'll take Leona very long to record the next album once she's done her commitments.

Cats would add some more credibility to Leona as well, particularly if she manages to get a tony nomination or even a win. The soundtrack from the musical could also be nominated for a grammy for best musical theatre soundtrack which would be great as well.
