I am on the hunt for Christmas, the other half has asked for one, however doesn't want an iPod. Ideally it would have ample storage or the ability to expand it via MicroSD of sorts.

The only ones I have come across are:

There are others, things are not like what they were 10 years ago when there was a plethora or choice. It really needs to have expandable storage

What's your budget? That's quite a big price difference, with the Sony (far more bells and whistles, audio enhancing features etc), being £140, compared to the Kubik @ just £27.

Personally, I wouldn't be paying over £100 for any Mp3 player, given all Smartphones serve as music players as well. The Kubik has expandable memory and Mp3, and will no doubt be a simple drag & drop affair. Depends if the other half will be happy with a lesser brand, as opposed to a Sony. Check out SanDisk equivalents..

Sansa Clip+ (which I have) or Sansa Clip Zip both of which can run the excellent Rockbox modded firmware (would not consider any player which does not). 4GB or 8GB models which can be expanded with an up to 128GB memory card.

I use mine instead of my phone because of the physical Play/Pause button which can be found and used by touch alone (especially since I glued an extra blob of plastic to it). Also means I don't get message alerts interrupting the music when I am out running. And can be hooked up permanently to the work van radio which would not be such a loss as my phone if a black hat decided to break in and take it. And can be used without running the phone battery down.

I would also not spend to much on an MP3 player. I would also look for ones that have 8gb or 16gb.
Most people I know like myself now use the MP3 player on there mobiles.
My sister has a Sony 4gb MP3 player that I got her for her Christmas 3 or 4 years ago but she hardly uses it now and now uses the MP3 player on her IPhone 5s more.

Sansa Clip + works for me. Add a 32GB micro-sd card.

I also have a cheap Lumia 525 Windows phone. The audio on that sounds better to my ears than the the Sansa Clip+ and it Bluetooths to the car stereo and a BlueTooth speaker in the Bathroom.

Clip is smaller, and battery life shorter.

There are a number of pre-set EQ settings on the Clip+ to try (and these can be futher manually tinkered with) but I find having EQ off gives me a decent sound balance that suits me when used with car or work van radio (EQ settings adjusted on those) and also used with headphones and played through my hi-fi with no EQ.
