Does anyone know when or if Virgin will start supplying 4g?

It seems to be something no one wants to talk about, at EE or Virgin. It seems Virgin are happy enough just allowing business accounts to have it.

They must be losing custom surely! very strange!

I would have thought so, everybody seems to complain about it, Virgin seem clueless and no one under board level at EE seems privy to the negotiations.

I do suspect that Virgin don't want to pay the extra to have 4G activated for their customers.

Perhaps they don't want to sign any 4G deal with EE if they're about to be taken over by BT?

This has been ongoing from before the BT deal.

I think Virgin might still be operating on the old T-Mobile system and would need wholesale migration to the new systems which I would guess won't be cheap.

T-Mobile and EE both run on the same system - all they need to do is provision 4G on the accounts.

I'm sure i remember reading somewhere that someone from Virgin said specifically that they have no plans to supply 4G to home customers.

Ah yes, here you go .. obviously I can't speak for the reliability of the site though ..

Quote:
“Virgin Media has confirmed it has no plans to launch its own 4G service in the UK anytime soon.

The company, which offers quad play services to its customers, launched its mobile service in the UK back in 1999 with T-Mobile, and was the first UK MVNO of its kind.

Despite its continued partnership with EE, the parent company of T-Mobile which now only offers 4G to new and upgrading customers, Virgin has no “immediate plans” to upgrade its three million-plus mobile customers using 2G and 3G.

The firm said its primary focus remains on expanding its “ultrafast broadband” service to cover four million homes and businesses across the country over the next five years as part of our Project Lightning roll out.””

That's right only 50% of O2 customers have a smartphone so about half of their customers are probably on a 2G device. Mind you O2 are bucking the smartphone trend of other networks by a huge margin!

Well they lost my interest in having anything to do with their mobile service regardless of 4G when I was looking for a PAYG / SIM only rolling bundle deal last month and as I’m a VM BB customer thought I’d get a special deal like BT are doing with their mobile service and BB customers, but in VM case it’s no deal.

Just to rub a bit of salt, on their web site it advertises a special deal for existing BB customer, fair enough but then I clicked the link that said for non existing customers it showed the same prices as existing customers.

Strange. Previously if you select you had VM broadband then you get prices £5 cheaper as I checked a few months back when looking around for a sim only with a bit more data. But now clicking yes or no to having VM broadband sees the prices remain exactly the same.

In the end I decided against going with them because they've not shown even an interest in getting 4G.

Clicking yes just seems to add a £5 option iirc.

Like BT landline to BT mobile calls at landline call charges for existing BT mobile customers taking out a BT landline or already with a BT landline account as well, or BT landline customers taking out BT mobile or are already with a BT landline account? Plus they possibly also able to get BT landline evening and weekend calls by phoning via BT mobile?

Surely it’s not impossible for virgin to include home broadband data to be registered on a virgin simcard to use while out and about at no extra cost, and the simcard can be used at home if the broadband goes down, assuming that’s what BT are doing.

I reckon O2 must be counting loads of devices in drawers. When I look around out and about I hardly ever see a non smart phone these days......

I think Virgin have changed the extra offer for VM home customers at least twice in recent times (within the last year perhaps).

They used to offer £5 off SIM-only tariffs for VM home customers. Then that stopped and they offered the £5 SIM-only tariff exclusively for VM home customers. Then that stopped, and now the benefit for VM home customers is "Unlimited calls to other Virgin Mobile phones" (which you possibly used to get with the previous offers as well, not totally sure of that though).

And they used to have some 12 month SIM-only tariffs for a while I'm sure. They seem to have been tinkering with what they offer with some regularity of late.
