I want to make some fudge as gifts for people but also dont want to leave everything to the last minute next week. I also don't want to give out a load of gifts that have to be eaten in a few days.

Googling some recipes they say that it can be stored for about 2 weeks in an air tight container. One of the recipes has cream in it, but will of course be heated but apart from that they are mainly butter and sugar based and if I was just making them for me I would happily eat them for weeks after, assuming they lasted that long before getting eaten

Am I best to leave it till next week or will I get away with making some maybe towards the end of this week?

Make as late as possible to prevent.. evaporation. And save your waistline.

From my own experiments, it's mostly keeping it away from moisture. Especially if you want to make/keep it smooth. Moisture just encourages crystalisation.

Hehe, I will be making extra... Well, I do have to sample it before giving it out to people. Make sure it's fit to eat and all that.

I have some zip seal bags and tins so hopefully I will be able to keep it ok. I will leave it till next week though. I may have a little trial run this week and take them into work.
