Using USB on new NOW TV box ( Roku 3)
After

Plugged a USB stick into the USB port on my new NOW TV box aka Roku 3, with some media files installed but I can't fine any on screen option to play anything from the USB!

I assumed that I could simply play vidoes and music etc from the memory stick. Am I wrong in my assumption?

If you scroll far enough down this page

http://www.nowtv.com/box

you will eventually hit the Tech Specs section, expand that and the Ports section says

Quote:
“HDMI (cable included), Ethernet, microSD card slot, USB (microSD and USB not currently for use – hardware for potential future functionality)”

I am assuming you mean the Now TV box and not the Roku 3 as they are not exactly identical even though they share quite a bit of DNA.

You can install the playto app on the now tv box and on an android device, then you can can play local videos (copy files from usb to phone sd card or use an otg cable etc).

On an actual Roku there is the separate "Roku Media Player" channel that does that. I don't know if the Now TV boxes are allowed to have this.

The formats that are supported are surprisingly limited though.

Many thanks everyone for the helpful replies. I missed that bit on the Now TV spec. No mention on any paperwork in the box! No FMTR as such. The Roku 3 does indeed have a functioning USB port. I shall try some of your recommendations guys. Have a good Christmas.

You can set up your box as developer mode then side load the roku usbplayer. This allows you to play eg. MP4 files from a usb hard drive.
Search for the key words above. Its easy to follow but does need you to install the files by connecting a networked pc to the Now TV box.
