I doubt very much that The Editor is The Master. Simon Pegg is not likely to take on such a role. He's a great comedy actor but doesn't have the 'charisma' to be The Master (no offense Simon!)

Looks like the leak to the papers has completely blown the big surprise ending to the first series RTD had so carefully wrought! An end of series cliffhanger beckons - hurrah!

Another quote from this week's Radio Times (other magazines are available):

"It's [the episode] full of intriguing backstory, and quite intense..."

Looks like we will get more background on the timewar then.

Also, Robert Shearman, the writer, says the episode took him over a year to write, and he's based his Dalek on Hannibal Lecter.

Looks like they're finally giving the Daleks back their teeth, as we'd hoped.

Ouch!

I've just been hit by a train of thought - need to think about this one.

Sorry if this has been mentioned but clicking on the Bad Wolf twice gets you to someone's "Who Forum"

http://www.bad-wolf.org.uk/forum/index.php

The BBC would NEVER produce such a site or afford to be linked to it.

Very true, BBC website pages are also usually .stm or .shtml, and say something along the lines of:
Quote:
“This is a fictional website created for the new series of Doctor Who by bbc.co.uk's official Doctor Who webteam. [snip] If you would like to learn more about Doctor Who please click here."”

on the disclaimer page. Gotta love the amount of effort they seem to put into making the whole series sound as if it's happening right now, and affecting every day life

Think it is someone who has obviously visited the forums and seen our debates on the subject and has decided to have a little chortle to themselves at our expense...fine by me...such effort to go on behalf but I won't be looking in future.

Well, it's well know that RTD is a huge fan of Big Brother - and there's the episode (episodes possibly) near the end which features the Editor and reality tv.

So what were you thinking?

He's no Eric Roberts, that's for sure.

The IFilm montage has a short clip of episode 7. Not much to go on, but I do hope that the Editor will become a recurring character.

Did anyone else listen to the Project Who documentaries on Radio 2 last month? I did but when I tried to access them today they are no longer available to listen to via the radio player on my computer. The reason I'm asking is because it contained huge chunks of dialogue from the new series and hence lots of spoilers. One is that Van Statten calls the Dalek a "Metaltron" as he doesn't know what it is and asks the Doctor if he knows as "he would love to know what it is really called" and that the last person to touch the Metaltron burst into flames. Also that the Editor dies in a very imaginative way halfway through that particular episode (according to simon pegg who was interviewed). Unfortunately my memory is on the blink at the moment so I could be wrong about the Editor - did anyone else listen to it? Could resolve a few issues.

Agreed - many were less than amused by Eric Roberts, myself included...

I've seen this clip and Simon looks great - a very understated menace. Loved his quote about the role too:
"He [the Editor] is very in tune with the Universe. He's fascinated by the Doctor, but ultimately, he just wants to tie him up and torture him".

Ooer!

I'd love him to crop up again at some point.

Didn't someone say the Daleks return again (more than one, this time) in episode 12 and 13? And is this does a theory, or do we know it to be a fact?

Yes - this time there's loads of them, and they have a spiffy new design.

Their return is mentioned in the special edition Radio Times that celebrated the launch of the new series (I believe it's been confirmed in interviews too).

From www.newwhoforum.com

"After successful negotiations, the Daleks will feature in two stories. A lone"classic"version will appear in episode 6. (Stills from this episode are shown below). An army of Daleks will appear in the final two episodes of the series and it is expected that they will be redesigned. It has been revealed that, like the ones in Remembrance of the Daleks, these Daleks will also be able to hover."

Thanks, that gives me alittle theory actually (I'm turning more whovian by the minute ). I think it's reasonably safe to assume, that if they are appearing en mass, then it's going to be set somewhere in the time war, perhaps the end.

Assuming this, I'd say the conversation in episode 5, and the Doctor saying "I could save the world, but I could risk losing you" (or words to that effect) to Rose could be significant. They certainly seemed to linger on the moment, to perhaps give a clue of things to come.

Perhaps the Doctor has to end up choosing between saving his own world, Gallifrey and saving Rose, and chooses Rose, in episode 13.

Apologies if this has been suggested already, I haven't read every post.

Let's do the time warrrr againnnnnnnnn,
It's just a jump to the left.......

I am sticking to my guns in thinking that Rose will be the key to it all and will ultimately change the outcome of the Time War. Perhaps her encounter with the Dalek will be the catalyst in influencing events in the future.

I agree with you about Rose (mind you, I always have) - she will be the key.

There are many theories as to why/how - ranging from her simply piecing together all of the clues revealed week by week to present a solution, to her being the first type 102 Tardis (Compassion) and containing a distillation of all of the Timelords knowledge, albeit unknowingly at this time.

Your own theory about her introducing the human factor to the Daleks is also another interesting one.

The majority of posters on here seem to think there's more to Rose than meets the eye - I'm thinking Saturday's episode will give us more information to enable us to narrow down the list of options somewhat.

And some more hints about the timewar, too. The past couple of episodes have been distinctly lacking in hints about the timewar - maybe that's another reason why we didn't take to them as much as the previous episodes.

I don't think it's really a theory that Rose is the "key".

I don't understand why this is speculation.

Christopher Eccleston has already said that Rose is the key in an interview.
I thought everybody already knew this

He's already told us that she is, so what's to speculate?

Been a bit busy the last few days (I'm trying to move abroad), but the quick train is:

Many people have mentioned that the scene with the giant fans in The End OF the World reminded them of a computer game.

Now, could this just be the way it was written? Could it be that the BBC will try and pry a few more shekels from us with a game? Or could it be that this IS a game?

It would not be the first time that the Doctor has had to play games.

Celestial Toymaker played games
The Mind Robber set up scenarios & puzzles
The Yeti are moved on a kind of chessboard in The Abominable Snowmen.
The Game of Rassilon was played in The Five Doctors
The Gods of Ragnorak were effectively playing games in The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.
The Curse of Fenric (again!) featured chess (and echoed other stories in that season)

(On a less obvious note, there have been puzzles to solve in stories like Death To the Daleks and Pyramids of Mars.)

The origin of the Celestial Toymaker was never explained. The Mind Robber turned out to be a computer. The Yeti were controlled by The Great Intelligence - again we know very little of him(?).

And in Fenric we have yet another game playing intelligence.

So, we have themes involving games, and a host of galactic intelligences that like playing them.

Are some of these intelligences nothing more than avatars of far more powerful beings? The Guardians come to mind (again!)

As Den so rightly put, RTD is a Big Brother fan. The extremes of reality shows have been explored in films such as My Little Eye (grossly underrated IMHO). The reality concept is the ultimate game at the moment.

If the Great Powers love playing games, then why not have one specifically involving the Doctor? After all, he has p*sssed off devils, daemons and assorted demigods!

Which DID lead me to the Editor...

(However, because I've not been online as much as usual, quite a bit has already been said/revealed/hinted at - so a whole theory had come & gone. Revised idea below)

If the Editor is another game player, is he a Big Gun, or just another avatar?

Who's hand (no pun intended) is REALLY playing this game with the Doctor?

So now we have several potential arcs:

The Time War
The Mystery of Rose
The (Big) Bad Wolf
The (Long) Game(show?) [BTW The Long Game phrase is often attributed to chess]

Is this an elaborate and complex single arc, or will we find several resolutions under our Christmas trees?

RTD is offering us a universe of infinite possibility - and I bet he'll still flummox us all!

It's not the fact that Rose is the key that is subject to speculation, but in which way that fact will be played out.

Man this thread is getting so long, I've given up trying to understand the Bad Wolf stuff. I'm just going to watch it and ignore any fanfic/novels influences and just let the show unfold the plot for me.
