Has the hype over a Christmas #1 died now?
It is weird that there has been no hyped up releases surrounding the Christmas #1 this year. It used to be the most interesting time for the chart. The Rage Against the Machine vs. X Factor battle was absolutely epic. Has X Factor ruined it? I find that aspect interesting as X Factor's effect is starting to warn dramatically.

Never particularly found it interesting really, it's the same as any other number one.

I think the big thing about the Christmas number one years ago was that in relative terms buying singles/albums was more expensive and so these items could, and would be bought for people as gifts or stocking fillers. Today they are so inexpensive that I don't think anyone would buy a singe for anyone, even if they could find it on a physical format to give.
The Christmas number 1 was losing it's importance before X-Factor/Pop Idol etc came along and finally put the nail in the coffin. The RATM protest seems to be a last hurrah for the cherished position, & rightfully so! |

The way things are going, 2015 might have a surprise Christmas #1 as Louisa's sales on iTunes are on the decline already, and her song hasn't exactly shot up Spotify. It also doesn't help that it's probably one of the most boring winner's singles - even the build up to the final chorus is so limp and lifeless.
I don't think Louisa will have any advantages next week. Yes, her overall sales will probably keep her top 10 but this year the Christmas #1 could either be the continuing reign of Justin Bieber or Mariah Carey finally topping the UK chart 21 years after it was first released. |
