Anybody tried to make Hawaiian poi? Any advice?

Hi there fellow digital spies

Has anyone tried to make Hawaiian poi themselves? Based on the recipes I found it sounds quite simple to make and I can get the taro roots from the Asian market.

What's best to be eaten with poi? Any exciting tips?

I would be using one of the following recipes:

http://www.hawaii-wedding-guide.com/poi-recipe.html

Thanks for your advise. I am thinking of something very special for new year's eve this year so any advice is highly welcome

As it's the Hawaiian staple equivalent of rice it's a sure bet that it can be eaten with any typical Hawaiian dish.
If you've heard of it, tasted it and are quite keen to make it from scratch from taro roots then surely you are more informed than most posters on this forum who've not even heard of it?

My wife's Hawaiian, so I will ask her. Not sure she's ever made it but I expect she'll have some ideas of what to eat with it.

I think you'd know if she'd served it up.
Google the images.

Here's the list that my wife instantly came out with when I asked her what to serve with poi:

Kalua pig
Lomi salmon
Lau lau
Cabbage
"Basically anything"

Oh, she's certainly never made it while we've been married. Happily for me, it transpires that she's never made it at all, which hopefully means that she won't be tempted to try.

Thanks a lot for the info! The Kalua pig definitely seems like a good choice to go with.

I've never made poi I have eaten it though if it looks like and has the texture of wet cement and tastes of nothing you've cracked it. Hawaiians have some great food poi isn't one of them. Kalua Pig on the other hand is amazing.
