I noticed whitlock is now 18 in the order of merit. Thats a big fall from grace for somebody who was one of the top players not to long ago.

PDC Order of Merit

Barry was right when he said the top 10 are the PL top 10. Don't think that has happened before

1 - MVG
2 - Gando - £152,000 behind
3 - Lewis
4 - Taylor
5 - Wright
6 - Wade
7 - Thornton
8 - Smith
9 - Barney
10 - Chizzy

11 - Jenkins
12 - White
13 - Klaasen
14 - Huybrechts
15 - VVdV
16 - Bunting

Merv, Whitlock and Dolan drop out the top 16
Hamilton, Painter and Newton just hang on to top 32 status whilst Norris moves up to 37th

Been a long time since Phil Taylor was England's number 2. I am guessing around 2007 when Colin Lloyd was World Number 1

if he falls much further he won't even qualify for the World Cup!

Now that would be a story...

The more I think about this the better an idea it becomes

The way the OOM lies at the moment is perfect

If they had 4 a side, there are 4 English and 4 others in the top 8
If 5 a side, there are 5 English and 5 others in the top 10
If 8 a side, it is 8 and 8 in the top 16
and if they go 12 a side, like the Ryder Cup, then there are 12 Englishmen and 12 from the Rest of the World in the top 24. It could not be better

How about this then ?

England - Capt Dennis Priestley

A Lewis
P Taylor
J Wade
M Smith
D Chisnall
T Jenkins
I White
S Bunting
M King
J Pipe
J Caven
S Baton

ROW - Capt John Part

MVG
G Anderson
P Wright
R Thornton
RVB
J Klaasen
K Huybrechts
VVdV
S Whitlock
B Dolan
M Suljovic
B van de Pas

Very good idea.

Phil must be gutted. According to the OoM he didn't even rake in half a mil. Saying that, it may be a good thing with a divorce on the way.

Yes, all the prominent players of the moment would be involved, unlike with the current World Cup format. As with the Ryder Cup it would make the race for a place in each respective team interesting as the cut off date drew closer too.

Say afternoon and evening doubles on the Friday and Saturday, then singles on the Sunday as the big finish. Non-playing captains responsible for putting the various pairs together for doubles and how to load the line-up for the singles. It would make for a really interesting international team event.

I had assumed one of the main reasons for the world cup was to give "lesser" nations in the Darts world a chance to play on the big stage

To play devil's advocate wouldn't this proposed event be essentially a England vs Holland/Scotland event most years?

I'd imagine a lot of the appeal of the Ryder Cup comes from the novelty of Matchplay in a big golf tournament, the only real unique thing about this is the Doubles aspect, but that isn't really that big a draw to pull in punters.

It'd be interesting to see how it'd fare though. I do like the idea in theory

How about you do the double to start format?

The World Cup is a dull event. The crowds at the venue are small and it is not a great TV spectacle as the viewing figures show. People like to watch players they know and even the die hard would struggle to know who a lot of the players are. Yes it is good to spread the word but I am not sure that showing Hong Kong V Poland at 1.00 on a wet Wednesday in front of 20 people is doing the game any favours.

No he's not because you cannot transfer from BDO to PDC. He's entering Q School. If he plays like he did at the GSOD he'll be still in the BDO by this time next week. Can only see De Graaf troubling the tour card issuers to be honest.

Is it still the same that the semi finalists at Lakeside automatically get offered tour cards ? If that's the case I wonder if Jamie Hughes may switch

I think they stopped offering that a couple of years ago.

The current format for the World Cup of Darts would maybe suit the BDO better than the PDC, given the PDC bills itself as the top end of the sport. That being the case then the PDC event should have as many of its top players as possible involved.

The BDO do hold a World Cup, it features team events, singles, pairs, males and females

Excellent. Sounds a great all-inclusive concept for the BDO. Makes even more sense for the PDC version to be more narrow and focussed on the familiar top end players they have?

Two former world finalists in the field - Manley and Dudbridge. Plus the most recent player to drop from top 16 to qualifiers, Colin Osborne

Kirk Shepherd makes it three former world finalists.

As you mention, former UK Open finalist Colin Osborne is there too, along with a couple of other former UK Open finalists in Barrie Bates and Mark Walsh. Throw in a World Matchplay winner in Peter Evison for good measure, along with a fair few other familiar names and it looks set to be a bit of a bun-fight for those tour cards!

What on earth happened to Osbourne? he was a steady top 20 player, capable of beating the best on his day. not relatively old either, he's still surely in his 30's?
