Believe it or not, I haven't heard Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody yet this year!

I have heard at least 3 of your 1974 selection, but am not sure about Showaddywaddy. Phil Butler may have played it the other week on his 70s & 80s show.

Agreed. Slade and John & Yoko are overplayed.

1975 was great too, with Greg Lake and Dana's Christmas songs. Oh and Renta Santa by Chris Hill.

There was quite a battle between Mud and The Wombles, not just confined to people buying records. Mike Batt I think claimed they couldn't get enough copies pressed to supply demand-or it may have been a distribution problem. Whatever, Mud were at the top for 4 weeks and also had the biggest selling single of 1974: Tiger Feet.

Dana's It's Gonna Be a Cold Cold Christmas was beautiful. It beats me how it is rarely played when it reached no 4 and the less successful Step into Christmas and even Christmas Wrapping get played more.

Also in 1975 the Goodies had Make a Daft Noise for Christmas!

Didn't really like MUD. Find the Wizzard track irritating. Sick of hearing Slade.

Now 1975 was a better year for Christmas songs, such as Greg Lake and Mike Oldfield.

I don't remember that one at all. You never hear it these days but I do remember their 'Father Christmas Do Not Touch Me' really well though.

73 was clearly better, slade and wizzards tracks were two of the genre defining songs that will and have stuck with us for all time. i never imagined they would back then, and "its christmas" was pure genius....

but

their popularity has now counted against them imho. are we all not sick of hearing them? they meant so much to me 'back then', but their popularity over the years has destroyed my memories i associated with them. 40 years later and they are so passe...

so as songs i do think they are superior, but way overplayed so lesser known crimbo tracks like mud, showaddywaddy, dana, are more welcome sounds to our ears now.

ps..... i prefer 2003, the darkness - christmas time dont let the bells end, bo selecta - proper crimbo , new (at the time) not overplayed, and funny!

I said this exact same thing to my daughter the other day when we were out shopping and it was playing. It doesn't bring back my carefree childhood in my mind anymore when I hear it. It doesn't make me feel anything much apart from mild irritation.
I used to get annoyed that a song that got nowhere in the charts when it was released - Step Into Christmas by Elton John - got played to death every Christmas but my favourite, which got to number 2 - Wombling Merry Christmas - never gets played. But, actually, I'm quite glad it doesn't because it might cease to give me those warm nostalgic feelings and memories of shopping in Woolies for gaudy wrapping paper on a dark December evening in 1974.

Shame the Dana, Wombles and Gilbert O'Sullivan songs don't get played much or put on Xmas compilations.

I really don't have a very high opinion of the Christmas songs from either year, or (Greg Lake and Jona Lewie excepted) any subsequent year.

If I never hear the Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody", Wizzard's "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" or (worst of all) Wham's "Last Christmas" ever again it won't be a day too soon!

I much prefer the really old Christmas songs, those dating back to the forties and fifties. They had so much more class. Give me Bing singing "White Christmas", Frank singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", Nat singing "The Christmas Song" and Ella singing "Winter Wonderland" over that seventies and eighties Christmas drivel any day of the week.

exactly..... nostalgia is a personal thing, I'LL decide where and when i want to indulge in any particular era, ill not have it foisted on me by the great crimbo marketing machine

tbh i prefer 'winter wonderland' and 'sleighride' as they are more a celebration of winter instead of the over commercialised crimbo (i refuse to refer to it by its correct name - such is my disdain)
