Guess the year on Gem 106 was 2005 the other day. What a poor year! The only half decent song played was Simon Webbe no worries. Also it had James Blunt You're Beautiful

One of the worst years for music

Wasn't that bad.

Some great tunes in those 2. And much better than the sh*t we've endured since 2011.

Gwen Stefani's Cool was an under rated gem from this year

I particularly liked 2005 for the long hot summer for music. The only subsequent year that has lived up to 2005 is 2013. I shall list the songs I liked best from 2005 on Sunday.

I thought I could surely find a few to contradict that, but it looks as if the OP was correct. Even the best albums in this list were decidedly average.

Absolutely not.

Oh wait I forgot this forum turns its nose up on black genres and only regards rock music by white males as the only acceptable 'respectable' kind of music.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill...ingles_of_2005 the top five alone is better than any song released from the 60s-80s and the rock trash you all listen to.

Of course, we're not idiots , we realise any Kelly Clarkson B- Side is better than every piece of music recorded between 1960 and 1989, we have ears

2005 was when I got into DnB and there was a LOT of quality DnB about, so I disagree with you, OP.

Exactly. How can you judge the quality of music from a year by what's being played on a crappy commercial radio station?

The whole Top 5 was dreadful. It isn't until you get to no.7 that you find a decent track!
As for black music genres. I find it sad what has become of "so called" R&B. It was one of the most exciting genres between the 50's and 80's but now most of it is unlistenable dirge.

I liked 2005. I remember Mariah dominating that year, and the continuation of Gwen Stefani's LAMB era.

I was never apart of the James Blunt mania, but then it's no different to what we have seen with the likes of Amy, Duffy, Adele, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran or Emeli Sande since.

Oh wait, this is a pop music orientated music forum to it isn't a forum that "rock music by white males as the only acceptable 'respectable' kind of music" at all. In fact I would say a large percentage on this forum don't like rock music at all, but don't let that minor inconvenience bother you.

As for the year itself, i'm currently on my work laptop so only have a small selection of music downloaded on to it, however for 2005 I've got...

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
Katatonia - Black Sessions
Kate Bush - Aerial
Avenged Sevenfold - City Of Evil
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Kasabian - Kasabian
Elbow - Leaders Of The Free World
Sons & Daughters - The Repulsion Box
Nightwish - Once
Within Temptation - The Silent force

Plus many more so no, I disagree with the OP, 2005 wasn't a bad year for music at all!

I thought it was a pretty good year.

Standouts such as:
Breakaway (Kelly Clarkson)
Push The Button (Sugababes)
Don't Cha (Pussycat Dolls)
Hollaback Girl (Gwen Stefani)
Your Beautiful (James Blunt)
Gold Digger (Kanye West)

It's probably because there was such a mix in genre that people often forget about, there was also no particular band or singer other than James Blunt who stood out that year.

.... 05 didnt have a 'long hot summer', that was 03, but were you meaning figuratively ?

I disagree, some great albums were released in 2005 by Sugababes, Girls Aloud, Kelly Clarkson and Madonna.

For me, I agree - Kelly Clarkson was the best thing to come out of 2005

Well we all know how you feel about Mariah

However Mariah was slaying the music scene in 2005, in terms of sales and chart positions.

I long ago came to the conclusion that the majority of people posting in this section don't like music at all.

I loved 2005, it was probably my favourite year for pop music. Some great albums from Girls Aloud, Rachel Stevens, Sugababes, Kelly Clarkson and Pussycat Dolls. And Robyn as well (although I didn't hear that album until it's UK release in 2007).

2006 was much better. 2007 and 2008 were meh but at least 2008 had Katy Perry breaking through. 2009 and 2010 were great, 2011 quite poor, 2012 and 2013 not vintage but both had very good summers. 2014 and 2015 have been pretty full

That's my summary of the last decade

One of the defining songs of 2005 for me is Amerie's "One Thing"
It was everywhere during the summer of that year.
