What acts have you seen that varied wildly in performance?(same act)
2 stand out for me.(all early seventies)

Lou Reed, Chalk farm roundhouse..brilliant!....
1 year later at the Rainbow, ...awfull..he was outta his head and it was a disaster.

Led Zeppelin, Albert hall. First concert I ever went to...it was magnificent!
But Alexander Palace 2 years later....Jimmys playing was way off and out of tune...(the only bad performance though..I've seen them 6 times and 5 were great).

Main one that comes to mind for me is Bonnie Raitt. I'd seen a couple of really good performances but the last time I saw her her voice was gone and her choice of songs and setlist just didn't inspire me.

Erykah Badu. I saw her once in 2008 and then again in 2010. She was amazing in 2008. In 2010 she was still good but not as good as in 2008.

Maybe not completely relevant but i was lucky enough to see Amy Winehouse live three times and she was always nothing less than excellent, never late or drunk or off key like the tabloids wrote about so often.

Dizzee Rascal in 2009 and 2013. His actual performance was great both times, but the setlist the second time was pretty tragic with virtually nothing from his early years and instead just the hit-and-miss commercial pop from Dance Wiv Me onwards. Fix Up Look Sharp was the only pre-2008 song he performed the second time.

Dizzee sold his soul, one of the biggest sell outs going.

I was lucky enough to see her live too. First time she cancelled the show five minutes before start. Rescheduled for a week later. Which started 45 minutes late.

She drank throughout and the longer the show went on the more drunk she got, by the end she was absolute plastered.

That said she was great. She slurred a few words towards the end and given the amount of alcohol she'd consumed I was amazed she was still standing.

But I am very pleased that I got to see her live. If she was that good blotto I imagine she'd have been simply incredible sober.

Me too. I first saw her In the Manchester Apollo soon after the release of Can't Take Me Home. She was phenomenal.

After M!ssunderztud was so massive and she started playing arenas I thought there was no way she could maintain the quality buy I've not missed a single UK tour and every single time she has absolutely blown me away.

She is absolutely incredible live.

I've seen U2 21 times over the years and not one of those performances have been disappointing or sub par.

Led Zeppelin at Knebworth. Jimmy Page was completely out of tune and seemed to be playing different songs to the rest of the band.

Not sure why people are suddenly posting about a bunch of bands they've seen nail it a bunch of times

Anyway, Korn for me. Saw them supporting Ozzy Osborne at Ozzfest 2010 and they were shite, looked like they'd rather be anywhere else, no crowd interaction whatsoever, no sense of show at all, at that point they were the only flat out "bad" live band I'd ever seen.

Fast forward to January this year opening for Slipknot at Wembley Arena and they were fantastic, great crowd interaction, some jokes to lighten up the atmosphere, great light show, and - cherry on the cake - they even pulled out Slipknot to perform "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys with them.

Not quite as extreme but Motley Crue too - quite at average at Download in June but fast forward a few months to November and they were blowing me away with how phenomenally good they were. Absolutely outstanding and that 2nd performance is down in my mind as a Top 3 best. Just goes to show there are some bands out there you can't write off based on one show.

I think System of a Down are renowned for being inconsistent live.

They were excellent when I saw the at Leeds 2013 though.

+1 for Jimmy Page. I was at Knebworth too and it wasn't that he was out of tune, he was just dreadful (see 2nd clip below). I also saw Led Zep at Ally Pally in the early 70s and Jimmy was brilliant. It seems his heroin addiction really took over around 75/76 and it permanently destroyed his playing. Even before Bonzo died Jimmy was a spent force as Knebworth shows, and he's never been able to get anywhere near the performance level of the early 70s since.

To illustrate my point, here are 2 clips of the same song, The Song Remains The Same, the first from 1973 (from their US Tour, not long after I saw them at Ally Pally) and the second from 1979 (Knebworth).

1973:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m2FhRv8xF0
Jimmy is brilliant here.. He's got the lot; speed, precision, originality and, above all, musicality. There are so many highlights but, for instance, there's the traditional style lead solo (ie, 2:48 to 2:57) but also a very original and rapid arpeggio solo (3:08 to 3:17).

Compare that with the same song from Knebworth 79:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtBCUeLr9wg
Very sad. Jimmy is, quite simply, dreadful. All the lead solos have gone and he struggles even to play chords, and when he attempts the arpeggio solo at 2:49 to 2:59 all he can manage is a succession of out of time bum notes, and his laughter suggests he too realises how bad he is. 4:10 to 4:20 is even worse, in fact, embarrassingly bad, as if someone has picked up a guitar for the first time and is just messing around.

Apparently, according to Jimmy, the excessive drug taking and general over indulgence really started on the 73 US tour and he says he remembers very little about it. That would suggest he was not at his best in the 73 clip above, which makes his brilliance even more remarkable.

Chiming in on Pink too. She's actually a really strong singer. I was really surprised because although she has a nice tone to her voice, I always assumed from her singles/recordings that her voice would be quite average. But she was as strong a singer as Christina Aguilera at her peak! I was gobsmacked.

Kings Of Leon seen them three times at Festivals , the first two times they don't seem to want to be there , so unengaging and soulless , then touring their last album they seem to have funnily learned how to get a crowd going and was actually an amazing gig , moody types I guess .

Saw Prince 6 times between 1990-95, and have seen Nanci Griffith 7 times so far. If I had any money the latter would have been a higher figure.

I saw Pink after the release of Missundaztood but before she started doing arenas and she was so, so good.

For the Truth About Love Tour, I just looked up online that she was scheduled to play 142 shows. She played 141. The one single show that was cancelled out of that entire tour was the one I had tickets for

I have seen Prince several times.

He was brilliant all but one time.

The last time I saw him was on the 2 night stint at the O2.

On the night we were there he actually said something about playing into the early hours. In reality it was barely an hour and very disappointing for that reason. He just seemed like his mind was elsewhere and he wanted to leave as soon as possible.

It was doubly galling because I kept reading about other nights where he played for 2 hours or more and was incredible.

Which night?. He was 'on' the 4th, he was 'off' the 11th.

Prince can get very easily get pi**ed off at times, some tech guy possibly annoyed him or his guitar string snapped doesn't take an awful lot...to change fun party Prince to sulky Prince.

Only band that comes to mind for me who were like that is Pitchshifter.

First time I saw them, I was bored out of my head. I liked their music on CD, but I couldn't wait for the gig to end.

Second time, wow, bloody amazing gig. I was pretty much dragged to the second gig, but I'm glad I went.
