Do you read Manga?
I'm just curious if people who read comics from Marvel, DC, Darkhorse and etc. also read manga?
I can understand people maybe not liking the style of the artwork, so is it the Japanese manga style that puts you off from reading manga? Also guess the price can be an issue, with one volume being much more expensive. So, would you be inclined to read manga, if they were at the price of western comic books and with the same amount of pages? Personally I've been reading mostly shonen type manga like Bleach, Naruto and etc. Probably should expand to reading other types in the future. |

I read some Manga back in the early/mid 90s but nothing ever really grabbed me so I haven't touched it since... Nothing to do with price or art-style, really.

Yes I read manga just as much as comics, favourites of mine include Naruto, DBZ, Deathnote, Cardcaptor Sakura and Black Butler.

As someone who is interested in Korean culture, I would be interested in looking at some Korean Manhwa comics. I've heard of a few titles ("Priest" by Hyung Min-woo. and "Banya: The Explosive Delivery Man" by Kim Young-oh). I've occasionally looked in the Manga sections of comic shops to see if they also sell Manhwa titles, but no luck there. There are also numerous comics produced in China (Manhua) and India (Chitrakatha) but I don't know whether you can easily obtain copies in Europe. |

@Residents Fan, I know what you mean when it comes to other far eastern comics. I suppose it's really hard for publishers to sell a lot of them, since a majority of them are only of the martial arts genre. It's just not what people in the west like reading. Is this also the reason why you prefer comics over manga, because it's mainly oriented with Japanese culture? I also want to add, that the last time I saw a Chinese comic in the UK, was ones published by an American publisher Comic One, who have since went out of business. The UK really only import far east comics and manga from the US, so unless there's an America publisher picking content up, you'll probably won't be able to buy it in UK stores. Also manga has a much bigger following in the US, and the added value from anime adaptions of manga and merchandise. Anyways, I see a lot of western comics nowadays with a manga like art style, do people avoid these altogether, or enjoy reading them as they are more like comic books but with a manga art style? I mean, I've seen stuff like teen titans and some spiderman spinoffs, do they work? |

The ones I really liked are the three series by writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima - Lone Wolf & Cub, Samurai Executioner and Path of the Assassin. The art is not really very typically manga-ish, more like classical Japanese paintings. The three stories (about 40 300-page volumes in all) can be read as a single epic historical novel set in 17th Century Japan. Published in English by Dark Horse, thoroughly recommended.

I'm aware that that there's a huge pool of Manga titles though, and it would be reductive to make generalisations about them. Since English is one of the official languages of India, it's possible English speaking visitors to that country might be able to purchase and enjoy a sample of Chitrakatha. |

This might be just the bookshops I frequent, but I've noticed there's hardly any books
on "How to Draw Comics" on sale anymore...but numerous books on "How to Draw Manga". There's the old perennial "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way" , but everything else seems to be Manga "How-To" books. |

I'm about a third of the way through Akira, but I'm generally more a US-comics kind of guy.
