Just been listening to a best of collection from 70's rockers The Motors featuring the magnificent 'Airport'.
Sadly the other tracks, while in no way unpleasant, are little more than average, bog standard rockers not fit to lick 'Airport's' boots.

Which other bands/ artists had that one shining moment which stood out amongst a lifetime of mediocrity?

Another candidate: 'Dakota' by Stereophonics.

Heaven - Emelie Sande

That debut song got me very excited about Emelie as I loved the 90s dance influences but then she evolved into a totally boring MOR artist.

Disagree about The Stereophonics. Vegas Two Times, Traffic, Maybe Tomorrow, Lying in the Sun, I wanna get Lost With You....The list goes on.

What I would pick is Nickelback. I think "How you remind me" is a fantastic song but everything else they have released is a bit bland.

This just demonstrates how subjective these threads are, Until googling I'd have thought "Dancing the night away" was as famous and as big a hit, and I was surprised I could remember the words to "forget about you" despite never owning it or hearing it for years

Stereophonics have had loads of really good songs. "Local Boy In The Photograph" in particular is a great song.

Ben E King had more solo hits, eg 'Don't Play That Song' but mainly he had a string of great records as lead singer of The Drifters, too many to mention !

Errr...Kim Wilde's version of "Keep Me Hanging On" is one of the definitive hits of the 80s
