Just bought a Sony KDL 40w705c tv. Picture quality generally brilliant however watching football tonight on Sky sports SD through HDMI cable and the picture looks dark. On hd channels picture is good.

Also the football mode is weird too much processing and sound too much.

The sound has no bass, do I need a soundbar?

The tv has the latest update. Any help much appreciated

Press options on the remote control for picture and sound settings. Press the white i manual button for what to do. Sound on these sets is better than many and there is a graphic equaliser that will help but the sound on most if not all flat panel TVs is poor so you may choose to buy a sound bar. Go and try and hear some, asking on forums is not helpful as your idea of good sound may be a lot different to that of others.

The first thing I do with any TV I own or setup for anyone else is go into the picture menu and search for any setting with the word "Dynamic" in it and disable it. In my experience all these so called picture enhancement gizmos do is knacker the image quality.

I find it best to turn all the "auto/dynamic" picture processing settings you can find off and just adjust the more basic settings to get an image quality that you find looks best.

Thanks, why manufacturers want to ruin their products by adding artificial processing that does more harm than good I know, marketing bluff I guess.

Will have a good look through disabling all the rubbish as you suggest.

Very bizarre but cant get into options when the source is SKY, only with the in built Freeview tuner, is this normal?

Thanks again

Unfortunately so - it's a 'feature' of CEC, you can either turn it OFF on the Sky box (perhaps called HDMI control or something similar?) or on the TV (BRAVIA Sync).

When you're connected via HDMI-CEC the remote is trying to control the external device, so rather than bringing up the TV menu it sends the command to the Sky box (which ignores it). If you had a Sony BD Player connected, it would bring that menu up instead of the TV one - and it's still a complete pain in the bum

You should be able to get into the TV menus regardless of what source you are watching. Also many modern TVs allow you to have different settings for different sources. So setting the picture options for Freeview won't necessarily make any difference to Sky on an HDMI input.

And if you have something like a Blu-Ray/DVD player on a second HDMI changing the settings on one HDMI won't necessarily change them for the other HDMI either. So you might have to go through all this set-up malarkey several times to apply it to every possible thing you watch.

Wouldn't say it's "a feature" of CEC at all. Panasonic TV's (not the hideous vestel ones) happily access the TV menus when CEC is active and you are watching a source that also utilises CEC. have a Sony 705 & many Panasonic's in front of me right now.
On the Panasonic TVs there is a button called option that brings up a menu selection page from their PVRs, from here you can access the various menus on the PVR.
The Sony TV also has the "option" button that does the same. However, pressing "home" on the Sony remote pulls up the "Main Menu" on the PVR while pressing "Menu" on the Panasonic one just brings up the TV Menu as you would expect.
I would call this poor implementation on the Sony as opposed to a "Feature" of CEC. When done properly, CEC is a great addition for easy control imho.

Yeah.. people will buy more of a TV with lots of features, even if they are useless, because they think they are getting better value and increases the 'show off' potential when they ask their friends if their TV has something that their new one does. Their friends older TV with fewer features is probably miles better....

You should also download AVSHD709 to set you black level. Hence "dark picture" as most sets crush shadow detail.

OP - this might be worth a try.

Have a look for an option called "LED Motion Mode" and make sure it's switched off. It can darken the picture when dealing with fast movement (such as a football match)

Here is a review of a similar TV. Look under "Motion" for details of what might be happening with yours.
