It was actually recorded the year before, 1984. Shaky and his management knew it wouldn't get to Number 1 ahead of Band Aid so they kept it in the can for a whole year. Is it just me or is that kinda cynical?

You mean, is it cynical to release a record when it has the best chance of success? Possibly, but only in the way that the entire entertainment industry is cynical in exactly the same way. Whether music, film, literature or TV, execs. don't just pick a release/ broadcast date at random. They're all carefully scheduled to give the best chance of success, taking into account what else is being released that same period.

It would also have been pretty distasteful and probably quite un-comfortable for Shakey to have to compete with Band Aid with the whole 'Don't buy that record that (supposedly) will do so much to alleviate poverty and hunger in Africa. Buy mine, which will buy a new Benz for my paymasters.'
