52. The Last Confession of Thomas Hawkins by Antonia Hodgson, audiobook version narrated by John Lee.
A cleverly constructed follow up to The Devil in the Marshalsea. Thomas finds himself working for a rather unlikely patron whilst implicated in a crime he did not commit. I enjoyed this but kind of wish that the previous book had been left as a one off and not turned into a series. |

40. Smoke and Mirrors - Elly Griffiths
6/10 - I really wanted to like this book as I love the Ruth Galloway series by the same author, but I just couldn't get into it and it took me over 2 weeks to read. The ending was pretty good but I just don't really like the detective and his magician friend. I also felt there were too many similar showbiz characters that I got confused about who was who. 6/10 - I really, really wanted to like this book too, as I loved Us and One Day but I didn't find the main character, Brian, believable. He just had too many flaws and too many disasters. |

The Printers Coffin by MJ Carter
No2 in the Blake and Avery series Wasnt sure about the first one in the series (The Strangler Vine) but decided to give this one a go. Very strong on atmosphere but a dull and lifeless plot. The author is a historian by trade and this reads like more of an educational text than a thriller. Not a series I'll be continuing with which is a pity as I really wanted to like it. |

54. The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Mayhew Whalen.
This was a Kindle First from a few months ago. Summertime and the residents of a small town in North Carolina are spending a lot of time at the local swimming pool. An accident brings neighbours closer together, but there are dark secrets lurking beneath the surface. Sounded intriguing but wasn't really. |

6/10 - I really, really wanted to like this book too, as I loved Us and One Day but I didn't find the main character, Brian, believable. He just had too many flaws and too many disasters. 6/10 - this is one of the Richard & Judy books which I read for my book group. I'm surprised at the good reviews it gets as I found it very mediocre. The story itself was quite good although I felt it dragged until about 50% then the last 25% was very rushed; but my main complaint was how badly written it was - the sentence structure was appalling - many sentences were so fractured and the story jumped between scenes without so much as a blank line between them so I was often confused about what was going on. |

55. The Warden by Anthony Trollope, audiobook narrated by Timothy West.
Book 1 of the Barchester Chronicles. Septimus Harding is a member of the clergy. He sings the liturgy at the cathedral and is in receipt of £800 a year as warden of a charitable hospital for 12 needy elderly men. His comfortable life is put at risk when the legitimacy of his stipend is questioned. Plenty of opportunity for Anthony Trollope to poke fun at the Church of England and rage against the power of the press. Timothy West is an excellent narrator. That's my target of 55 books achieved for this year. |
