55. The Warden by Anthony Trollope, audiobook narrated by Timothy West.

Book 1 of the Barchester Chronicles. Septimus Harding is a member of the clergy. He sings the liturgy at the cathedral and is in receipt of £800 a year as warden of a charitable hospital for 12 needy elderly men. His comfortable life is put at risk when the legitimacy of his stipend is questioned. Plenty of opportunity for Anthony Trollope to poke fun at the Church of England and rage against the power of the press. Timothy West is an excellent narrator.

That's my target of 55 books achieved for this year.
Well done Sue on reaching your target

226) Beauty Tips For Girls - Margaret Montgomery (not this is a proper novel - not a make up book!)
227) The Tea Chest - Josephine Moon
228) Beneath The Surface - Heidi Perks

I have a lot going on and have slowed down - don't think I will reach 240 this year

122/ The China Governess by Margery Allingham

Campion mystery.

Much as you'd expect from a this golden age crime writer. Some of the attitudes are very dated (one of the characters is adopted so feels he cannot marry his fiance in case there is "bad blood" in him!) but it's a straightforward and fun read.

123/ The World Without Us by Alan Weisman

Speculative non-fiction

I was intrigued by the premise of this book but the exploration of what the planet would be like if the human race suddenly disappeared is actually a fairly small part of the book.
The author has a tendency to over-egg all of his arguments so the book became rather wearing after a while.

124/ Another Girl, Another Planet by Martin Day & Len Beech

Another Summerfield book.

The limitations of the series is starting to show. I found this entertaining but felt that it was retreading old ground.

33. The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald. A short novel and quite Barbara Pym-ish. I enjoyed it. Apparently it's been made into a film.

56. The Frozen Lake by Elizabeth Edmondson.
December 1936. War is approaching and fascism is on the rise. Unusually cold weather in the Lake District means that the lakes are freezing over and various members of two wealthy families are drawn back to their respective family homes for Christmas by the prospect of skating on the ice. Old family secrets and feuds are revisited.

A very large cast of fairly unpleasant characters who were definitely of their time and class. It took about two hundred pages just to set the scene and introduce everybody. A predictable plot and outcome with obvious clues along the way, but a seasonal story and generally ok read.

42. The Loving Husband - Christobel Kent
6/10 - this is one of the Richard & Judy books which I read for my book group. I'm surprised at the good reviews it gets as I found it very mediocre. The story itself was quite good although I felt it dragged until about 50% then the last 25% was very rushed; but my main complaint was how badly written it was - the sentence structure was appalling - many sentences were so fractured and the story jumped between scenes without so much as a blank line between them so I was often confused about what was going on.
43. The Light between Oceans - ML Stedman
10/10 - a beautifully written book and a tear jerker!

Well as I start counting on Christmas Day I have failed to reach my target of 60 this year but I will try again next year!

Congratulations to everyone who did meet their target and Happy Christmas!

57. Skin and Bones by Tom Bale.
A shooting spree in a small Sussex village leaves many dead and few witnesses. The police are satisfied that the atrocity was the work of one gunman who subsequently shot himself. A badly injured survivor knows that this was not the case and that she is now in danger.

A good thriller, a bit gory in places.

159) The Cleaner by Mark Dawson

Bought a kindle edition of the first three John Milton books. Supposedly the new Jack Reacher, struggled to get into it but finished the first book. Can't bring myself to read the second yet though.

160) Saint Death by Mark Dawson
161) The Driver by Mark Dawson

Persevered with books 2&3 of the omnibus I had.

I'm trying to clear off my to be read collection on my kindle before buying anything new from my wish list - a lot on there is 9.99 which I think is a lot for a kindle book.
