I've got three, are you getting more than one? It's not advisable to keep a degu on its own.

I can't say I'm too keen on the idea of pets for Christmas but if it's something you're aware of beforehand and understand fully the responsibilities necessary, then that's cool : )

You'll need a BIG cage though. Hamster, mouse, rat cages etc are way too small. Also, I'd advise getting two or three (of the same sex) as they do require company.

I have three girls, they live in a huge cage with lots to keep them occupied.

They can be quite hilarious at times.

I'd recommend you do some research on their social and dietary needs if you haven't already. Degutopia would be a good place to look.

Also their cage must have solid floors as they get something called bumblefoot from mesh floors, also a solid wheel not a mesh one. Ours have a flying saucer wheel which has been the best one by far.

Degus like a dust bath. Wonderful to see them play it in.

3kg bag from Pets At Home.

Be careful how you feed them. I'm not sure if mixes exist now, but we had to mix chinchilla pellets with hamster food (check the fruit content). Degus are diabetic, so care must be taken. If you do use a mix, make sure the pellets are gone before topping up. They are like kids and will pick the best bits first.

I'd also suggest having more than one, they are very social creatures.

Edit: I see some of this has already been covered.
