A decent progression in sound and something ultimately more substantial than a basic power ballad that could be knocked out by anyone. Was I expecting a dub-step genre splicing album that defied the ages no, but neither did I want more of the same. And of course music is entirely subjective, but to me to say this song is anything other than basic is foolish it just is it is basic, and pales in comparison to her more interesting singles.

Yes, heard it for the first time yesterday and it's horrific. Don't really get the hype over her about being a so-called great singer. Honest question, is she capable of reaching high notes like Mariah Carey and Minnie Riperton have done?

In a year when Cheerleader and Whip Nay/Nay were released? Not even close

Not for me, in fact I'd go as far as saying its the best single she's released yet. That particular honour for me goes to Meghan Trainor's 'Dear Future Husband'...irritating is an understatement...

I don't hear 'Hello' as a bland song.
Bland implies a song that lacks any strong, outstanding features and that wouldn't be true of 'Hello'. 'Hello' is an emotional and dramatic song and Adele gets that across in the delivery.

The song is now overplayed a bit and I would like to hear more of 'When We Were Young' which I prefer as it drives a long better.

Honest answer, you have terrible criteria of a great singer.

In relation to the question, I don't find 'Hello' irritating in the slightest. There have been several more irritating songs this year to include Meghan Trainor's back catalogue, 'Marvin Gaye' in particular, that Watch Me/Nae Nae monstrosity and the cover of 'Show Me Love' (I found the vocals quite whiney).

Anybody who thinks that 'Hello' is the most irritating song of the year clearly has never heard 'Honey I'm Good' by Andy Grammer. Now THAT'S irritating.

Yes, because as we all know the greatest, most emotive singers really have to sing very very high notes . I swear the next person who posts on here mentioning a whistle register I will explode ...

strange thing is with Hello, iv'e gone in the opposite direction to the norm with it. I didn't like it much for a few weeks, avoided playing it on her album until this week when i gave it a chance. After 8 weeks i now think it's great - talk about a slowburner

It's a little basic i suppose but many great songs are, but one thing it isn't is bland. People who call it that either haven't heard it (unlikely) or don't know the meaning of the word. Bland would wash over you unnoticed, Hello blows your ears off

Overrated, bland and basic are such overused words to the point they've lost all meaning.

Is this the most irritating and pointless of all the Adele bashing threads yet? You betcha!

Also no offence to the person that mentions it but why do people talk like Dubstep is still something modern and innovative!?! It went out about 6 years ago and perhaps its biggest influence is making the "wobble" bass (wub! wub! wubwuwuwub!) into the boring over used clichéd synth trick ever thanks to scores of idiot DJ's copying You-Tube tutorials on how to make the sound.

Even in her old school power ballad elegance Adele is still about a million times more sonically innovative than that!

It's been years woman! He's probably forgotten all about you. Why call 1 thousand times if he didn't answer the first few. The other side doesn't sound like a nice place to be. What's the point in going over things again and again. Hello, it's me. Fk off!”

She's lucky the poor harassed bloke didn't issue a restraining order on her ass. Calling someone 1,000 times is just not acceptable and she must have a lot of time on her hands.

She is talented and the 25 stuff is much better than the dirge on 21. Really disliked that album.

Although specifically, Hello is starting to get on my nerves which isn't very good for the lasting longevity of the song in the years to come.

I never said that any of them were great. I asked if Adele was capable of reaching the high notes that some other singers have been able to. I asked because I'm only familiar with a few of her songs I just don't think she is anything special from what I have heard.

Conversely, you could also ask if the 2 singers you mentioned can/could sing as low as Adele. Equally pointless question of course....

It might be a different guy, of course!

I think the song is more therapy for Adele than for anything else. I don't think she expects an answer.

There is something of the stalker feel about the song...nowhere near as explicit as 'Every Breath You Take', mind you.

No it's not but it is by far the most overhyped single of the year

If reaching the notes that Mariah Carey can is what constitutes a great singer, then you have a very narrow scope, that very few singers could ever meet. There's so much more to a singer than range, and for me, and I imagine a lot of people, tone, texture and character are so much more preferable.

This is as a fan of Adele and Mariah Carey, for the record.

What use is Taylor if she can't sing?

She is an abomination as a live singer.

I dont find it irritating, possibly a bit overplayed but it's a dramatic song and she sings it well.
Sorry to hijack the thread, but I've often thought, could this song make a "trilogy", telling the last part of a story starting with Make you Feel My Love, then Someone Like You, then Hello? I dont know why but I get the feeling they could all be about the same guy.

Totally agree
She is completey self absorbed - Hello, I treated you like **** when I dumped you
But hey - I'm over it now so I want to make you go through it all with me to make me feel better.
I'm in California - and you are still in that dump we grew up in,
I'm great and you are not.
I want to talk about just how amazingly great I actually am

She is also thick - "Did you ever get out of that town where nothing happens"
Well.... if she is ringing his home 1000 times (and she say's "no-one is home" which you would use for a landline not a mobile) - then she knows the area code she is dialling - so she knows full well where he lives.

Smug, self-centred, complete bitch, stalker.

I hope he is happily married, with kids, and won the lottery as soon as she left him.
