"Snow risk" for the weekend in southern England.
When I hear those words from 3 or 4 days away I always tend to translate them into "No risk". Do the met office overplay the snow risks in advance nowadays to be on the safe side and not get caught out? I rather think they do so much of the time, especially when it concerns the country south of Birmingham. I had plans on Tuesday which I altered due to the expected poor weather, with rain and also the dying wind remnants of Storm Imogen as it diminished but it ended up being quite the most beautiful day I was not expecting to arrive until today, Wednesday. Rainfall currently a modest 17mm this month, nothing spectacular, and no temperature minimum hitting freezing point so apart from a bit of wind I'd class the month as rather benign so far. |

John Hamind was unsure last night exactly how far North the incoming trough would go. So if there is any (wet) snow, it may be Northern England Northwards, The Midlands, or possibly even the South. Mind, that was last night. May have firmed that up a bit more now. Eta on my phone. Bloody predictive texting won't let me spell the forecasters name right.

Has anyone got any of this predicted snowfall today yet?
Heavy rain here but the temperature has fallen in the past couple of hours from 5c at lunchtime to just 3c now. Only 20mm rain this February so far with me, so under the average at the moment. |

Rain is taking forever to get here. It was sunny an hour ago but now we have a sheet of grey cloud.

The rain arrived too early in other parts of England, it will be gone by nightime which means that temps will be too high for it to stick or fall. It is 5c here now with a negative dew point which is good, really needs to be about 2c though. |

It is now under 4c and very cold in the wind. Icy rain has started. Nowhere has seen snow yet but can see us getting it by 12, temp is dropping already.

There might be a bit of wet snow over Eastern England, but nothing of any consequence.

I'm now looking forward and contemplating what kind of March is in store this year. Not impossible that the worst of winter could come in March of course, a month that has varied massively between cold and warmth over the years. |

well the temperature has been sat at 2c for the past two hours after dropping at a steady rate. I guess we are not going to see snow.

Well as usual they've over egged the situation massively. I'm in the area due to have some possible wet snow but infact the temperature at midnight had infact risen to 3.8c from the 3.4c it had been earlier in the evening. No chance of anything but rain, which is now dying out slowly, ready for a decent day tomorrow, having put 10mm through the rain gauge in the past 24 hours.

It will indeed be interesting to see what March is like. In the meantime, yet another one of those days, so very common this Winter, with a sharp temperature contrast between South and North, and a very sharp dividing line to boot - link to current temperatures |

They did - the temperature was just that bit too high for snow. Around 4C quite widely.

I've also been rather surprised by the lack of rainfall in the south this weekend and expected in the days to come, considering the prospects that were being mentioned before the weekend with that lengthy wriggling front all the way out into the Atlantic with a train of cloud along its length. Yet barely anything has fallen and the month has a drier than average 28mm so far with a week to go at my North Bucks location. |

We are now getting yet more hints at snowfalls later this coming week, plus talk of a cold plunge again. But I'm getting a bit jaded by all this because the kind of daytime temperatures they are talking about during this impending colder weather are nothing particularly cold for February and certainly not the hovering around freezing type. It feels to me that forecasters, on the BBC, are routinely describing temperatures by day of 5c, 6c or 7c in the same way that they used to describe temps of 0c, 1c or 2c. They've used all the superlatives to describe and forecast minor temperature dips nothing beyond the expected for the winter season.

I remember this week back in February 1990 when the temperature in many parts of the south and east of England including my area only just fell short of 20c. I can recall walking home on the afternoon of Friday 23rd February 1990 and being amazed at how warm the wind was.
An even more remarkable month came along in February 1998, literally days of warm sunshine mid month and no need for any coat outdoors over a more prolonged period of the month. Dry, warm and sunny. Bringing things bang up to date and it has been revealed that the calendar month just gone, January 2016, has been the warmest January worldwide ever recorded. http://www.climatecentral.org/news/j...e-record-20035 |

Yah I noticed that. Maybe it is different for south of England but where i'm from any highs below 3c are regarded as cold.

Going into March and we are going to be getting our most prolonged cold wintry spell for some time. So just when people think the winter season is ending, it bites!

Weather warning for 10cm of snow at my house at home. They had snow yesterday and now they are getting more.
![]() ![]() Meanwhile it's 14c here. I'm fed up of the weather here. Why can't it just snow once?!

It's 11 to 12 degrees C here at the moment. Nice and toasty after the rain stopped and lightish winds, sun peeking through from time to time. But we often get snow in March, sometimes in April and occasionally in May (with the late record being early June). I say 'we', but "up north" might be a better description! The current sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) increases the chances of a colder than normal March, therefore snow in some places (but tells us very little about the weather at Easter, Express please note!) |

The current sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) increases the chances of a colder than normal March, therefore snow in some places (but tells us very little about the weather at Easter, Express please note!) Early yesterday morning (29th Feb) the temperature fell to -2.1c here in Bucks which was colder than I was expecting. Then today the sudden mildness has hit again after the rain went through, reaching almost 13c. However I was genuinely very surprised to see the actual forecast an hour ago suggesting possible snowfall even down south during tomorrow. I'll believe it when I see it however. I've got photographs in an album of widespread and a decent covering of snow that happened on 3rd March 1995, which was after a very mild winter season in 1994/95 in which February had not even gone below zero at any point in my area, which is the same place on left as I'm still at today. The "spring" month of March 2016 could very possibly end up a colder month than the "winter" one of December 2015, aided by the extreme mild conditions three months ago. |

Snow is very common in March where I am from. Everyone harps on about it being a spring month but it really doesn't warm up properly until the bear end of March.
Like right now for home the temp doesn't go above 6c for the first 7 days of March. |
