Well I am forecast a high of 5c on Thursday (Northern Ireland), I think that's quite cold for almost May. For NI and Scotland this cold spell has definitely been cold.
It's not really been cold here at all. |

Yes, they showed that during the Sunday evening weather on Look East.
Like I've said on here already, it feels like we have made no seasonal weather progress since the depths of autumn and winter 4 or 5 months ago, even gone backwards and June is just 5 weeks away now. I do find the forecasters keeping on about "Arctic blasts" and blue graphics covering the UK quite misleading. Daytime temperatures may be chilly for late April but are not hovering around the freezing point for most of the country. On Sunday I registered 11.6c for instance, following a night minimum of 2.4c and even now the night time is a quite ordinary 5c. Just looking at my old weather registers from the 1985-87 period and on this day in 1986 when I was still in school the temperature was 17.5c with thunder and heavy rain as I took the readings at 5pm. Next day I recorded 20c. This day in 1987 is a huge contrast to this year however - 25th April 1987 and I recorded a maximum of 26.5c, so that's hitting 80f, and sunny and dry. There were many similar temperatures that last week of April too. I recorded 7 consecutive days between the 22nd and 28th April with not a cloud in the sky at the time of my afternoon readings. Same location as I still am at today, on the left. (not that there's a single other meaningful comparison with 1987 so far)Incidentally, the last week of April 1985 was also cold with snow showers - and of course, we all know about the last week of April 1981 !!! |

Still, dunno what all the fuss is about, think I'll nip out to cut the grass again. I'll let you know when the twin cold fronts have gone through!

Heavy snow shower about 5.30 tonight. Lasted about 10 minutes. Lay for about 5 minutes.
Unusual for Sussex at this time of year, but not unique. |

In Kent we just had thunder followed by quite the snow blizzard. It wasn't forecast and I've never seen snow followed by thunder. It's the most excitement my dull day has had.

Shower of soft hail or "graupel" here recently.
My brother called to say there was a very heavy snowfall in Derbyshire mid-afternoon settling for a time. Quote:

I had a couple of heavy showers of this stuff you named during Tuesday afternoon. Settled very briefly.
My brother called to say there was a very heavy snowfall in Derbyshire mid-afternoon settling for a time. The only time I ever witnessed "thundersnow" which is extremely rare, was on the afternoon of 28th January 2004 during a very heavy snowfall in my area of North Bucks, almost a blizzard when there were a couple of lightning flashes and very muffled sounding rumbles. It was a very strange thing, two weather types that just should not go together. |

Considering the masses of close knit showers across virtually the entire country during Wednesday afternoon, some looking quite sharp on the radar, with lightning too, I just do not know how where I am managed to entirely miss anything more than the briefest spit in the breeze and the rain gauge stayed empty. There was plenty of extremely dark grey threatening cloud around but it all just missed. My April rainfall amount is on 80% of the average expected for my location at the moment with 40mm. A hefty direct downpour in the next 3 days could make a big difference.
As I write the temperature has just reached exactly 0.0c so a minus figure for tonight later on looks certain. Just picked out my diary for 1996 with all the weather stats in it, and this date in '96 was 21c, so 70f. A decent warm spell, but then May went very chilly, the coldest in over half a century at the time. |

![]() In between the showers, it's actually been quite mild - easily warm enough to go out without a coat, if you have a jumper on. But then I'm in Sussex, which tends to be relatively warm. |

In May last year, only one day reached 21 deg C and that for a mere 10 minutes (max. 21.4). That was our lot, down here. I hope for better this year!

As we move into May, it does look as though it will become less cold, although still somewhat unsettled, especially in the North. There is a possibility of high pressure building in the South leading to drier, sunnier spells and higher temperatures as a consequence.

Lying snow here in Manchester though I expect it will gone by midday. The weather app on my phone says outside temp is 0c, i'll check what the car sensor says when i leave in a few.
Heading towards the north west coast and north Lancashire today so i might see more lying snow as i go higher and more inland. No doubt this will kill the early growth on my spuds and knock back their cropping somewhat. Lots of people are holding back on planting out. |

It is snowing here again in County Londonderry. It snowed 3 times today and this is now the 4th time.
It's 1.7c though so it's not going to stick. |

My temperature dropped to 1.2c in that shower but it only started to stick on the roof, there are more showers on the radar so if they are intense they may well stick.
