100% snow cover in Buxton Market Place (webcam) right now, after 10-15 minutes heavy snow shower at +1 deg C. There was only wet ground 10 minutes before.
The roads in and out will be tricky but should melt on town centre roads before too long, they are good with the gritting up there.

Welcome to the thread Ian.
Did the snow last long or settle to any degree up there? I see that there are currently warnings for heavy snow in southern Scotland early this morning.
Here is the monthly weather report for April 1981 which mentions in detail the late April snowfall that spring, calling it "an exceptional late snowstorm";

I actually remember a late April snowfall covering at the other end of the 80's, in April 1989 infact, with a couple of inches of lying snow, even here in England at my relatively southerly low level location, lasting about a day on the ground. Nottingham had 4 inches of level snow on 26th April 1989. There had already been some significant snow earlier in April. By the end of May it was scorching sunny and hot however. Maybe it will be similar in 2016?

My brother is in charge of sending gritters out in certain parts of Derbyshire, and liaises with the Met Office about conditions and has to remain on call 24 hours a day on a two week on two week off rolling basis, voluntarily as part of his wider position but gets well paid for doing it. The "season" was scheduled to end this week, and not begin again until October. He's not on call this week so he's lucky. Apparently sending out the gritters for a grit of the roads each time costs about £5,000, and at times it can be tricky to judge whether to do so or not, you could blow thousands of pounds for nothing or not send them out and cause major issues if they should have been.

by the end of the week we should have high pressure to our east, low pressure to our southwest, and a run of very warm southerlies raising temps up to the high teens/low 20's .
i expect itll become quite humid too, with some thundery showers.

The two ‘Lows’ will push and drag each other across the N.Atlantic for the next week or so, bringing wet but mild’ish weather.
The high pressure system, presently sitting north the Azores, will then take over and we’ll bask in a glorious tropical heat wave until at least Christmas Day.
That’s my ‘amateur’ prediction anyway;
...... based mainly on the recent sighting of Salmon swimming backwards in the River Avon and Seagulls flying upside down over Cardiff.

I'll believe low 20's when I see it, but it will certainly be appreciably milder. Not that it would be difficult to be milder for the beginning of May, after this week

Actually the Met Office forecast from Thursday next week onwards, does appear to vindicate such a proposition:-

Meanwhile, we already have a north-south split, with 13 degrees in the south and 7 degrees typically up north... big difference again - it's been over 11 deg C every day in the last week down here, and 13.5 today.

i think 'milder' is underplaying it... its looking very much warmer starting on thuirsday when the displaced azores high shifts to our east and we pick up a southerly draft with high 'uppers'.
in fact the +10c upper isotherm is predicted to show its face albeit briefly in about 7-9 days time. we could get temps into the mid 20's with that.
mind you, the anomaly charts (noaa versions) dont support the southeasterlies this mornings gfs and ecm suggest, but keep the upper flow west of south - so warm - yes, but possibly more unsettled with heavy thundery showers.

"warmer" sums it up more aptly, rather than the Winter word "milder", which I used because it still feels like Winter. Even this morning there was another frost. .

If it's an early May heatwave to merit the name then the start of May 1990 is the one that I remember, with temperatures in the high 20's and hitting 80f throughout the first week, one of the hottest starts to the month of May in the whole 20th century. The May of just two years later in 1992 was also extremely decent by mid month and hot. General Election day in 1997 was 25c on the 1st and very warm and sunny, but within 5 days the temperature had absolutely plunged to just 6c at my location, with snow showers in parts of the country.
Meanwhile, as Blueblade has stated before me, the month of May has begun with another frost, the temperature hitting a low of 0.4c here in the early hours of the 1st, although tonight as I write the temperature is a full 10c higher at 10.4c, so we're back to December 2015 night time temperatures!

only midweek, the whole country will be dry sunny and warm by the weekend, obviously the warmest will be in the south and east, but if we pick up a more easterly draft the west and north could end up being the sunniest and warmest.
You can tell immediately that the airstream has changed. When I opened the back door this morning, gone was that chilly breeze we've become so accustomed to recently.

Very common tendency in the Spring, but I'm naturally biased and hoping not - or at least let's have one decent week down here before that happens
once it starts raining like this ,ie constant drizzle it never stops. looks like the low pressure is going to be too far south again this year. it was raining and miserable like this all last year. so depressing. more floods i bet

as youre probably aware, some models do suggest an easterly flow at some point. im prone to north sea stratus too off an easterly, but if its south of east, im ok, north of east and i suffer. i lost a whole weekend in july 2013 to cold grey skies right in the middle of that summers heatwave.
i guess it depends upon how the expected pattern breaks down. eastern high, low between iberia and the azores. if that low exists up the med we will get easterlies, if it exits northwards we will get a thundery breakdown (in simplistic terms)
