A white Christmas exists right now on Tinto hill just 5 miles in the distance from me, a nice view from my back door.

Was it a new moon then last night?

It looked good anyway and magnified.
No, it was a full moon.

I note the army have been sent in to parts of Cumbria to bolster flood defences in advance of more expected heavy and persistent rain later today and tomorrow. They are just waiting for the Environment Agency to arrive with the relevant equipment.

One of the guys was interviewed and I couldn't help noticing the really superb properties in the background. It would be a real tragedy if any of them were flooded.

60 to 100mm expected.

We're still on track to have the mildest December ever - by some considerable margin in the CET area. Possibly 4 degrees above the previous record. We will see.

I can see parts of Cumbria becming a disaster area. No exaggeration.
Yes, some places look set to be flooded for the fourth time this month, there are currently dozens of troops in our village setting up flood defences. I was out walking the other day, two large iron victorian railway bridges have been swept away, one of them is lying in the river but the other one has just vanished. They're so sturdy it probably remained in one piece and just barrelled down the river taking out everything in its path.

Tragic - pieces of history just swept away, underlining just how severe the conditions are.

Incidentally, yet another day with massive temperature differences between South and North. 14C over large swathes of England, to as low as -2C in Northern Scotland.

How very interesting. What you describe sounds very like "mammatus clouds".

Take a look - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammatus_cloud

I have a truly wonderful, clear moonlit early hours Christmas morning here, the first full moon on Christmas Day itself since 1977, with a temperature right down to 3.9c.
Yes that's what i saw. They were only there for about 5-10 minutes and only in one bit of the sky.I don't suppose i'll ever see them again.

I wouldn't fret too much. We have plenty of clouds all shapes 'n sizes most days here in UK. It's when you see clear blue sky you need to worry that something is wrong!

For sure. But i loved their almost apocalyptic appearance.Like a UFO was going to come down through them.

It's dark here.

Actually the day has been rather bleak. I drove to a relatives for dinner at 1.30pm and everyone was driving with full lights on.

There seem to be hints of something much colder early in the New Year from some of the weather models but it's only a small chance at the moment.

Right now the temperature just before midnight on Christmas Day is a full 10c warmer than it was last night on Christmas Eve at the very same time - the temperature outside currently stands at 13.6c with a strong gusty and rather mild wind. Although it was a damp and dull day with rain about, not enough to even register a full millimetre. Unlike up North.

That is true but infact sunrise remains pretty static until the end of the month and into January, with it rising everyday at my location at the latest possible 8.11am until new year. The sunset is however the odd minute later each day now. It takes a bit of time before the days start to lengthen again significantly.

As I posted in the other thread, these hints at cold easterlies in the first week in January have been popping up in all the operational runs for several days now, GEM started it on the 22nd then after a couple of days flopped to westerlies again but has now resumed its earlier 'cold' projections. GFS has been flipping between mild westerlies and something a bit colder and slacker but still keeps the deep cold well to our East, but it's now bringing it closer (at 10 days). ECMWF has finally produced a deep cold easterly at 9-10 days and that is reassuring for cold lovers as it was previously in love with the westerlies. The next set of runs will hopefully be a bit more consistent though I do now sense that a change may be on the way.

Maybe with this recent bout of model vacillation at 10 days, the message is that normal winter weather will resume next month, with a bit of everything even down south... and if so, not before time!

I find it instinctively much more difficult to get out of bed in these dark mornings.I think we're supposed to be hibernating at this darkest time of year.On full pay of course!.
Wake me up in March.

I'm never up that early to see that!
