Still not bad if it turns out to be sunny and dry.

At least now we can say it's not been continuously cold and miserable.

We were up at 7am, it had obviously been raining in the night. By 8 it was pouring down again, black skies, etc. and now it's hazy sunshine.

Well I don't enjoy it so I am glad it isn't going to last.

It's officially a HOT day. Current temperature has reached 26c here in North Bucks.

The trivia question worth finding out is when this date, 8th May, last equalled this temperature in England?

I've already been reading some speculative nonsense saying that "the UK is facing its hottest summer in 40 years".

It’s not hot here though. 15 degrees C here but it’s glorious sunshine though.

Hot temperatures are a bonus really, as long as it’s sunny, totally dry and not windy, even at 15 degrees C, it will do nicely enough.

The nearest I can get is 8th May 1922, when 27C was reached in London.

That is specifically for the 8th of May.

That's a very long time ago if that is the case.

In the end my reading peaked out at 26.8c this afternoon, which means it just got to eighty degrees, with 80.2f. It could conceivably be many weeks if not a couple of months or more until we see that temperature again, if at all!

true, in fact its possible that yesterday was the hottest of the year!

but heat in may often (but not always) is a pre-cursor to a hot and sunny summer. 76, 90, 95, for eg...

The first paragraph is more likely to turn out to be true as the hot weather throughout the summer keeps just missing the UK or clips Kent and far East Sussex at best.

That's thunderstorms, not hot weather.

Ah but this year is a leap year so you should really check the 7th. May in non-leap years!

Anyway, these "hottest for xx years" stats are a bit meaningless as where the hottest place is moves around every time, but we the people don't! Not so much anyway. I prefer individual station or area statistics and here, a few miles up from the south coast, the weekend was nice and warm but not even close to record breaking.

Specifically, we've had 3 days exceeding 21 degrees C and the same 3 exceeding 20. As recently as 2014, we had 4 consecutive days over 21 degrees and 6 over 20 so unless the afternoon rain fails to arrive here, neither of those sequences will be achieved (20.7 max, now 19.7). Though to be fair, our 24.5 max yesterday was 0.6 higher than in May 2014. Other places differ, naturally.

I wouldn't disagree with any of that (except the bit about leap years where I don't know what you're getting at), but the trivia question related purely to 8th May, which is what I answered.

Never mind the leap year thing, it's just me being silly, I'm just not into individual date records I guess.

I just get annoyed by the media desperation to squeeze some kind of record out of nearly everything that happens, and if they can't manage that, they invent some kind of record-breaking guesscast for next month, summer etc.. Heck, on May 25th 2012 it reached 28.5 at Bournemouth and that's just one station I picked out, others may be higher. So yesterday was nothing special nationally for May, just a bit earlier in the month than usual.

Oh, absolutely.Yesterday was very warm and pleasant, but it was certainly nothing special in the grand scheme of things.

For those who have a technical interest in the weather, and who hold long memories stretching back decades, and even have a knowledge of what went on before we were even born, weatherwise, the media just sound utterly ridiculous.

Incidentally, the really interesting fact about the aforementioned May 1922, is that on 22nd, 32.8C was reached at Camden Square - the earliest date 32C has been reached (the magical 90F old school, although 32.8 would, I think, be 91F, working out the old /5 x9 +32 lark in my head). Not sure where my calculator is.

........ put it like this, in my living memory when 25c+ is reached in the first half of may, more hotter sunnier summers have followed then washout wet ones. of course theres no rule, weather is random, but the pattern that leads to early heat often repeats itself, as patterns do, hence long dry/wet cold/hot, etc occur.

You'd think by looking at the rainfall radar that we've had a wet afternoon and evening so far down here in S Hants... but it's not true! All we've had are a few odd spots of rain, not even close to registering in the tipping bucket, and what were damp pavements for half an hour are already dry.

Most must be evaporating before reaching the ground, oh the limitations of rainfall radar! No sunshine though and a mere 17 deg C now.

It appears to be moving North with glacial slowness, and what there is is fragmenting as it comes.
