It was a rather pleasant day here in N.I, Hazy sun with 22c a high but it didn't feel all humid and sticky it was quite bearable.

Every time you appear in this thread, you seem to want to start an argument, rather than engage in the light hearted discussion which has otherwise been a hallmark of this thread since day 1. It is a weather enthusiast's thread and we all have our own ways of looking at things.

Who are you to lay down rules about us having to stick solely to met office definitions? But if we do, and if memory serves, the threshold of hot, is indeed, 25C or above, as a maximum. A hot day.

To be honest, if you come in just looking for an argument again, I won't be responding to you.

exactly..... its not a serious scientific thread on a weather site. and im certain the weathermen used to call 25c hot! they used to colour in 25c+ in red on the tellybox...

does it really matter to people on here whether 'hot' is 25c or 28c?.. can we really tell much difference? id suggest humidity will effect us more then a couple of degrees.

the main point is though, the accuracy of the noaa anomaly charts for days 6-14 which all summer have proven far more accurate then the operational runs.

erm..... can anyone else here see the huge error?.... "5 days or more when the temperature is 5c or more above average" ..... so..... lasr december when it was 8c above average for 5 days (thus we got 15c 16c) was that a heatwave?..... no! it was 'very mild'.

i cannot find a met office definition of what 'hot' is.... and 'hot' isnt the same thing as 'heatwave' and going by the met offices definition of a heatwave, the uk hasnt had any! or hardly any.

back to the anomaly charts, which currently for days 6 - 14, so including the bank holiday, are strongly suggesting low pressure will be anchored to our west, high pressure over the continent and scandinavia.

the uk remains under a southwesterly mean upper flow, so its looking unsettled but warm, wettest coolest cloudiest in the northwest, sunniest, driest, warmest in the southeast where it could be hot (as in 25c+ ) .

with the mean upper flow in the southwest, theres no sign on anything settled (contrywide , the southeast might be relatively settled) for longer then 2 days when transitory ridges cross the uk. we might well get more hot blasts/mini heatwaves.

towards the bank holiday weekend the mean upper trough to our west looks like becoming less dominant, so we should all get more pleasant summery weather, not settled for long as we keep the southwesterly flow, but it shouldnt be a washout nor a scorching hot period and itll still be mainly on the drier side of average away from the northwest.

of course this isnt set in stone, predictive charts can change, but this picture is one the anomaly charts are currently predicting.

So basically a pleasant bank holiday overall is suggested. That's good, going away that weekend. Don't want scorching, but don't want rain either. Pleasant is good

Of course, by tomorrow it'll be predicting hurricanes

thats how its looking currently, but it is a long way off and could go the way of the pear!

They used to have a table of such definitions on their website but I can't find it either now. It used different terms depending on the season, so Hot would never appear in the winter months and Very Cold never in summer months, for example. In summer there was Very Hot, Hot, Very Warm, Warm, Near Normal, Rather Cool, Cool and Very Cool IIRC. Some of the standard Weather books that we all know and love will still contain these definitions. However, the Met Office still appear to use those descriptions definitions in their monthly weather summaries on their website.

Meanwhile, I seem to be on the cusp of a technical "Absolute Drought" which, again IIRC, is or was defined by the Met Office as a period of 15 consecutive days with rainfall of less than 0.2mm. I have just had dry day 13 (14 if measured from the time of the last bucket tip) ... today is forecast dry... but Thursday here... who knows?

Of course, some of the media have already got hold of this, even the Telegraph seem to like the word "Drought" and when you can add "Absolute" to it, well they just can't resist! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016...lummets-below/

well the anomaly chart covering the bank holiday has shifted slightly, suggesting lower pressure to our west. so maybe not as pleasant as prior predictions... of course what these charts cannot predict is the timing of any systems, if systems cross between 9am and 6pm youll write the day off.... on the other hand if any systems cross the uk overnight we wont notice them!

so its looking unsettled for bank holiday, with the uk under a mean southwesterly upper flow. worst in the northwest, best in the southeast. there does look like there will be periods of rain, but also sunny dry spells too...

3 days is too long?...

We've had this sort of weather for weeks.. Maybe not as hot but we ain't had rain or cold weather for weeks !

Can't wait for summer to be over !

I think the BBC weather forecast for Saturday for my home town of Washington in the north east might be slightly wrong - it's showing the symbol for heavy snow! . I know the north east can be a bit chilly at times but it's never that cold that it would snow in August!

It reads like a typical Express weather story! They either say we are going to have snow for 90 days all through winter or, like now, we're in a for a blistering heatwave...

but its summer! i find it odd that you are moaning about a typical british summer, its only around average albeit on the dry side.


true... the express get a sniff of something with a kernel of truth about it then magnifies it out of all proportion.

trouble is.... its then the forecasters who get the blame for being 'wrong' when all along it was some hacks ignorance and probably deliberate misinterpretation that is to blame.

That always used to come under "Warm or "Very Warm", no idea why they removed the table, but still use the same descriptions in their monthly summaries of UK weather and from the temperatures they often report, the ranges for each category don't seem to have changed.

'Heatwave' is of course loosely defined as 5 deg C above the summer average maximum for at least 5 days, but I've seen the Met Office use "1 day heatwave" so for 'mini heatwave" I'll stick to my "1 to 4 days more than 5 deg C above the average maxima in a summer month. Maybe in Spring or early Autumn too.

It definitely was - the 25C symbol was coloured red, and I'm sure that John Kettley described 25C and above as "hot", sometime in the early 1990's. At any rate that was the instance when I heard it.

It's true that the weekend sees a downturn, but it won't deteriorate to that degree

anyway, the anomaly charts were proven right if we arent going to bicker about a couple of degrees... its another gorgeous summers day .... and theres no doubt that for most of the uk, this august is the best in 13 years... at long last!

I've heard it too! For Scotland (mean August max. 19.1, Edinburgh) and much of northern England (mean August max ~20.0), even Plymouth and the south west... 25 C is definitely hot there, not really in the south east though where 25C is pretty common, 2 or 3 above average. I'll go for 'very warm' as my description of 25C in the south east and the midlands.
