Helen Willetts, countryfile forecast: 31C possible on Tuesday. Peak of the heat.

Plus the aforementioned warm nights.

Oh, we'll easily break that. I'm just wondering if we will break the 32.3 degrees barrier, which has now stood for 67 years.

10am readings already into the low 20's across wide swathes of England, and up to 25 degrees over parts of the extreme East & South East.

We're in for a belter, folks

All this talk about extreme heat.........................we're (better actually) stuck under a belt of cloud here where I am in the central lowlands. Had a wet night too. Loads of thunderstorms look as if they've kicked off towards south west england into wales

Yes. Thunder, lightning and pouring down here in N. Somerset. I've had to put the lights on just to type this.

The thundery zone is the quasi stationary interface between the heat/humidity and the fresher air to the West. Complete contrast in temperature as well.

Incidentally, there's a strong potential for those thunderstorms, drifting South to North, to become very severe and violent as time goes on.

current temperatures

current rainfall

current lightning

Heathrow has just reached 32.2C - the highest September temperature since 1949. Alina

Not quite that warm on t'other side of London but still 30°ish. 🌤

Another Met Office tweet:

"Heathrow and Kew Gardens have recorded a temperature of 32.8 °C, making it the hottest September day since 1949".

Today also appears to be the latest date in the year that 32 degrees C has been exceeded without reservations.

Although 32.2 deg C was recorded at Camden Square London on 19th. September 1926, this is reported to be a sheltered site or more than 2 deg C above nearby sites, and the next highest on that date was reportedly 31.7.

Broken the 32.3C barrier (90F) for the first time in September, since 1949.

Nowhere near the September record, but certainly the last September 32C in the UK was 5th September 1949, 67 years ago, when 32.8 was attained at Maldon in Essex.

Bedford had also reached 32C at 2pm.

More showers are now breaking out as far east as the Isle of Wight, moving north and this is starting to take the edge off temperatures here, a bit further north from there. Temperature here peaked at 27.0 in sunshine (highest in Sept. here for at least 11 years), now 25.4, clouding over.

We were also at the extreme east of the noon band of showers, missing the pyrotechnics but it did produce 0.3mm of rain, a 3 degree C temperature drop, an immediate 2 millibar pressure rise and the wind direction veered all the way round from east to north, via south! Interesting boundary between the heat and the cooler fresher air.

There is rain currently showing up over my house on the radar, but it's dry... it's evaporating before reaching the ground. So far.

Here in the south of that Wales.

2 hours of lovely sunshine ....... then it began to cloud over. Cloud thickened and it got very dark with deep rumbles in the distance. Then followed a brahma of a thunderstorm that lasted an hour and rained until the early afternoon. Not sure what the weathers going to do next I think we will have more heavy rain.

Looks like some of the weather from the Isle of Man might be drifting over us in the North West. Still warmish but a very dark sky. It's just started raining with a bit of thunder too.

Looks like the Met office have revised their prediction for tomorrow here as well, originally predicted 28 but now revised to 24, which I'm happier about.
