We had a real wet Summer again. Think the patio furniture saw about 2 days of sun. 2014 we had a great summer but this year is a total washout. My lawn is a right mess. Moss everywhere. Totally waterlogged and muddy. Not worth trying to do anything with it because what's the point when we never have any decent days in which to enjoy it?

Just constant rain. Still, I look at the news and see all these poor flood victims and count my blessings.

Yes, it's just hit the same area over and over again.

I feel so sorry for the residents.

Storm Frank has undergone explosive cyclogenesis - BBC Weather.

https://twitter.com/bbcweather/statu...08259020738560
Which I think is the same thing as the "weather bomb" that Darren Bett described last night on BBC News at 9.55pm in the longer range forecast. What with "bombs" and "Frank" in that forecast I almost felt as if it was being a caricature of a forecast. Instead of using such inflammatory wording in an important forecast I think it would be far better to maintain some kind of measured but assured presentation of the facts. When a forecaster uses the word "bomb" just what is he trying to achieve exactly?

Still very mild nights - 12.1c currently. All December very much the same to the end it's going to be.

I must admit those were my first thoughts when I read what had been said. My first, and as it happens, incorrect reaction, was to think that those words were not the product of Met Office staff.

I also saw Darren Bett's forecast.

This is a storm to remember

Despite the floods down south it's been nothing but a breeze in a way

The Meteorological Office's "Monthly Weather Report" exactly a century ago.

December 1915 is an interesting read with many similarities to this month.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/media/pdf/d/4/Dec1915.pdf

January 1916 makes even more interesting reading with an even more remarkable parallel with this December.

Very interesting - and of course, December 2015 is set to become the mildest on record, with the previous mildest record (1934) being broken by over a full 2 degrees C, which is incredible - CET link

Net weather don't use exactly the same stations as the Met Office, so there might be a slight variation, but not significantly so I wouldn't have thought.

The met office stopped doing those monthly weather reports in December 1993, having done them continually since 1884. Rather a shame they did that for whatever reason.

There's a lot of stuff available in the Met Office online archive though, here (and there's more) including stuff after the MWR and DWR Monthly Summary ceased publication:

I totally agree. Those reports were brilliant.

Trouble is, that's too fragmented, just splits into more and more things so you don't really know where to look. Certainly there's no actual monthly report summarising the weather events of that month, as far as I can see.

Yes, there is no DWS monthly summary. Monthly weather summaries resumed via the website in 2001, so there is an 8 year gap. Stupid really, the gap needs filling. But from 2001 the monthlies are here:

Happy new year weather watchers! Hope 2016 gives us some interesting UK weather to enjoy or endure.

As the brand new year begins the temperatures across England overnight tonight are the lowest of the winter so far and it's dipped down to just 1.7c right now with me.

I ended up with 74mm of rain in December 2015, bringing the entire year of 2015 total in at 552mm, which was slightly drier than the average for North Bucks.

I am delighted to report that winter seems to be arriving in East Sussex at last.

Looked out of the window this morning to see some strange white stuff on the cars in the street. It appears to be frost, for the first time since early last year.

Still not cold enough for frost on the ground though, so early days.

First frost in ages and probably only the third so far this autumn/winter. Just glad I don't need to scrape the car this morning.

Overnight minimum temperature ended up just a fraction above zero at 0.6c.

I had forgotten until I looked that we did have a brief frosty period in November, on 22nd & 23rd when I recorded -3c and -1c overnight but other than that the new year early hours were the coldest since last March.

Whilst no real sign of it spreading here yet, some intensely cold air now in place over much of Central and Eastern Europe.
