Local weather station showed a high of about 12.5c around 2pm. At the moment we're looking at about 7.8c. Wind has died down from the gales we had yesterday (think the strongest gust was 60-odd mph).

Definite chill in the mornings on the way to work. Can tell it's pretty much October! Also been a cracking week for aurora. Lovely stuff!

It's good to see proper autumn temperatures by day and by night at the end of September for a change here rather than them threatening the 20 degrees C with just a brief glimpse of the sun, and still mainly near or over 10 degrees C overnight as has been too often the case in most of the recent autumns.

you said itll be warmer in the south, i did play down the temps saying 'localised', but isnt what 'in the south' kinda means? its been very autumnal in the north! and its been a lot cooler to... and in my defence i did say "but for most of the country it will be cooler and certainly autumnal in any polar maritime air" , which i think was pretty much right, we just didnt get as much pm air as i thought, hence underestimating the warmth.

a calm settled week for most ahead, but cloud will spoil the party by the look of it, robbing us of the warmer temps. this mornings charts suggest more of an easterly component to the airflow so cloud more of an issue.

there are hints too from all sources this morning that this settled spell will only be lasting a week, with some sort of breakdown next weekend. the anomaly 6-10 dayer keeps the high ridging from the northeast, over us, but the 8-14 day chart doesnt follow a logical evolution so until further runs reject or confirm the current one, is of no real use.

Temperature only about 9C outside but it's rising and the sun is shining so alough it's a bit chilly at least it's better than what was forecast a couple of days ago (cool and sunny rather than cool and rainy).

I don't like the days too warm either but neither do I like chilly mornings or cold nights! It's getting a bit cold with the summer duvet on now and I'm going to have to put the central heating on soon.

It may not be too cloudy well inland. With pressure high to the East and low to the West, the airstream is more South South East. The above might be a tad pessimistic. We shall see.

No surprise. With unstable air and low pressure right on top of us, I'd bet they will be breaking out quite widely as the pivoting area of rain clears, or indeed turns thundery itself.

We had a spell of rain earlier, but no thunder, unfortunately.

A few thunderclaps here S Hants this morning around 8-9 am, there must have been lightning too as one bang was very close but I was burying my head in the pillow to try and stay asleep. 9 mm rainfall so far today, in short lived heavy showers.

Could be the coolest day here since 3rd. June if the current max. of 15.9 isn't exceeded... but then again, it is October!

We're getting to that time of year now though when the sun has little effect on temperature, and its generally not nessessarily any warmer when the sun is out.

For example, here, today was partly cloudy with a hi of 13C, tommorow is forecast to be sunny and 13C. Into next week its forecast to be mostly cloudy and hi's of 15C...


In fact the nights are often now well into single figures on a clear night. The wind direction, ocean temperature, gulf stream and jet stream will now play a much bigger role in determining the temperature over Autumn/Winter 2016.

Right on cue, on the first day of the month *everyone* agrees is an autumn month north of the equator, today was the first day since May 25th. that nowhere in the UK reached 19 deg C. UK max. was 17.2, Weybourne.

Why pick 19? Because June July August and September (arguably the most summery months) all have an average maximum >19 somewhere in the UK, but nowhere does outside those months. And 19 doesn't usually feel chilly, autumnal if you like, even for us softies in the south.

another point worth mentioning about 'autumnal'..... mornings/evenings can feel autumnal in september even when daytime max's can exceed 19c... so many its wrong to describe a whole day as autumnal, as daytimes are often summery.

think we are heading for an east west split later this week, as winds swing around from a gentle southerly tomorrow, to a brisker easterly later in the week. so eastern areas look likely to become plagued by cloud whilst western areas could well be sunny and warm

at least its looking dry...

anomaly charts this morning suggest low pressure builds to our south after next weekend, high holds on over scandinavia, so a continuation of the easterlies looks possible beyond the weekend, but more runs need to firm up this suggestion.

charts like these would get snow/cold lovers hyperventilating in winter as these synoptics in winter would bring a 'big freeze' with air sourced from siberia.

Well we had a rather cold night last night here in N.I, I recorded 4c as the low. Even now its only 8c with thick fog. Autumn is in full swing here, the big ash tree in my back yard is almost totally bare now and I seem to have a never-ending job of brushing up leaves.

looking pretty certain now that we are entering a protracted spell of cool, dry, breezy easterlies, as high latitude blocking forms - initially over scandinavia but likely to stretch as far as greenland.

cloud amounts will vary as the breeze wavers around the eastern quadrant, but some eastern areas might not see any sun for some time by wednesday. western areas are most likely to see the best of the sun and warmth over the next 2 weeks.

but at least it will be dry.

and these synoptics WOULD deliver a 'big freeze' if it was winter, quite a severe spell too.

Widespread ground frost last night in inland country areas throughout the UK, not in most town centres though. Only two air frosts reported, one in the far north of England, the other in Scotland. Grass minimum here in suburban S Hants was +1.2 deg C; air minimum 5.2 but out in the countryside a few degrees lower. These are definitely autumnal temperature ranges i.e. rarely seen in June to September.

Still reached 17.9 deg C here today on a sunny day though, not at all bad for October.

Been glorious sunshine here last two days. Barely a cloud in the sky. The mornings and nights have been chilly though, due to the clear skies. "Brass Monkeys" out there as my mum used to say...

Went up to The Lakes on Sunday. Didn't notice any frost on the grass on Sunday Morning or anywhere else though there was condensation on the windows in the houses and on car windows so Winter is definitely on the way.

When I arrived about noon it was pretty cool (autumn warmth not like summer warmth) but then it warmed up and about mid-afternoon it got very warm (felt about 17C or even warmer but it probably wasn't as someone said it didn't get above 17C anywhere). I travelled to Keswick by coach and there was a thermometer onboard on a digital display thingy, it was all over the place. When I got on in the morning it said 16C, then we arrived at The Lakes it said 14C, when we left it said 13C, then as we got nearer home it warmed up again. 20C at one point! People were making jokes like "well it's 20 degrees outside, tropical weather, that's why that guys wearing shorts!"

The actual temperature was about 13/14C in the North West on Sunday, and today it got up to 16.8C at one point, according to the Observations from Bingley (I tend to take them with a pinch of salt because they tend to be a bit off, I find the BBC Weather app most accurate really at what it actually "feels like" outside).

Overnight the temperature dipped to 4.3 on Friday, 6.3 on Saturday and 1.9 last night. Apparently....


Tonight is much milder however, currently about 9C but increasing to 12C by dawn despite the predominately easterly winds! Tomorrow is forecast to be Cloudy and 15C.

Just refreshed the Observations and it's changed the readings. Looks like 14.1 was the max temperature today not 16.8 and the low was 4.6 not 1.9!

Pressure is very high though at the moment, it's past 1030hPa now!! Set to reach 1033 later.. That's very rare up here... My Barometer is showing a reading of 30.3 and is pointing to the "V" on Very Dry. Not seen it that high for ages!!

But if the easterly wind brings dry weather then wouldn't it be cold and dry in Winter rather than cold and snowy???

it depends upon the exact direction of the wind, and source plus pressure.

not every easterly in winter is cold and snowy, it can be very dry and cold, but snow lovers at least get the temps low enough for snow. this depends upon how high the pressure is, often southeasterly areas get more snow then eastern scotland, but it is dependant on where the high pressure is and how high pressure is.

if theres a northeasterly, the bitter air picks up moisture off a relatively warm northsea. hence frequent heavy snowshowers for eastern areas in winter. usually though the air isnt that cold so we get a stratus cover instead of convectional cumulonimbus.

I prefer the cooler days and mild nights tbh. No sweating in the sun or shivering on a freezing cold morning when icecles are forming on your windowsill....

House temperature is back up to nearly 19C again now. Feels lovely and toasty.

Another nice dry sunny day here thanks to the Easterly winds. Temperature currently 15C. It's got quite windy now though...

We should really get these easterly winds more often, it brings lovely dry sunny weather in Spring, Summer and Autumn and in Summer it typically brings hi's in the lo 20's so not blistering hot just nice.

It's a lovely change from the Westerly's we usually get here 90% of the time.

As someone else mentioned it also can bring loads of snow in Winter which I also love (see my previous threads earlier in the year!)

We're set to stay with the same pattern at least for the rest of this week and possibly into next week too...

I'm all for more Easterly winds from now on.

That East wind in London was coming straight from Siberia........do not stop at Moscow, Berlin or Paris.......

fortunately the sun was out so it wasn't too bad.........

Have to say it's been a lovely day today, even with the breeze.

I have found one disadvantage to the easterly win tonight...

It can get bloody chilly when the wind gets up.. Was out in a t-shirt with a thin zip-up sweatshirt and jeans tonight and it was 10/11C. Was fine when there was no wind but when it did get up it got quite chilly.

May need to start wearing my winter coat soon....
