A similar day to Saturday today. Started off cloudy with a strong westerly breeze, but now its cleared up, the suns got out, and its a pleasant 13 degrees with some fluffy white clouds :

Just goes to show that the westerly wind can definetely bring nice, settled weather, and the easterly wind can indeed bring chilly, wet weather.

Yesterday we had some heavy showers, the sun did get out a little bit later on but the chilly breeze kept it feeling very cool and autumnal. The sky was quite clear after the sun went down and we had no thunder or hail to speak of.

I think its funny how when London and the South East had all that hot humid stick weather in August and September, and everyone on here was complaining about not seeing a rumble of thunder nor a flash of lightning, when they could have done with some to cool it down. Now its October and thier wish has finally come true, albeit about a month too late when its not needed.

It never got that warm here. 14C was the mildest day in December last year. The average high temperature here was 11C for both November and December, plus we got record-breaking amounts of rainfall so it didn't feel very nice out...

Yes it was still mild for the time of year but it certainly wasn't warm or dry enough to be out in t-shirts and shorts or have the heating off like some people on here were claiming...

Surprised it wasn't cooler up where you are in Scotland...

I quite like the weather we're getting at the moment. As others have said, a mix of cloud with some sunny intervals, and the odd shower here and there. Not particularly warm but nothing particularly cold either. Not had too much rain for October. It's good sweatshirt weather. A lot of people are now wearing winter coats while some are still in shorts, and couple of people were in t-shirts.
It's pleasant but not sweltering hot when the sun gets out now. Weather looks to be warming up slightly, with winds switching to the South-West next week which will help keep temperatures at comfortable levels.

I quite like Autumn Weather. It's not like in April when it's all over the place and it can be snowing one day then 20 degrees and sunny a few days later, or warm and sunny during the day but then perishing cold at night. The weather is much more stable, predictable and temperate in the Autumn, and that's what I like about it.

"Boring" "Static" weather is the best! Wouldn't mind if it was October weather year-round tbh, I'd certainly be moaning a lot less!

To be honest I still prefer April - lighter nights and warmer weather imminent. Not much to look forward to In October except months of cold and dark - yuk.

As for what temperature I start wearing a coat at (locked thread) - well I've stuck my jacket on in the last few weeks, since about the beginning of the month. Not so much because I'm feeling that cold, but more because of the comments I get when I don't wear one.

I could probably make do in just a shirt until the daytime max falls below about 8C.

Yes the thread has gone a bit quieter. I've been distracted elsewhere too, but the weather has remained very quiet. I have heard one of the BBC's weather forecasters, John Hammond, saying that if this current blocking high pressure set up from the east was happening a month from now in late November then we would be looking at some probable snowfalls from the east. It can't help but make me wonder how this might set up the coming winter.

I've been struck in the past couple of days at the European visible satellite picture over eastern Europe and Russia where this blocking high is situated at the moment. The cloud seemed unusually extensive within it.

So far in October I have recorded just 19mm of rainfall, and 12mm of that fell in 10 minutes last Sunday night.

I've never known anyone get any comments from not wearing a coat in cool/cold weather, unless they were wearing a t-shirt or shorts in sub-zero temperatures or something... Tbh, it's more common for people to say "Are you hot in that jacket/sweatshirt?" to people that wear them in warm weather (I've done this) than people who don't wear them in cold weather.

There's no point changing what you wear just because some people wear warmer clothing than you in the same conditions. If people are asking if you are cold, just think you are hardier than they are. High school kids typically don't wear raincoats and just wear their blazer year-round. When I was at school, many of the kids just wore hoodies or even just a jumper in the coldest weather. Some people wear shorts in January, some people never wear a coat all Winter. Do people care?? No...

looking possible that the high thatll bring mildness/warmth later this week might turn against us, retrogress and link with the greenland high whilst a deep north atlantic trough shifts eastward to replace the scandinavian high.

this would open the floodgates from the north, so in 8 days time a northerly blast is likely....

id suggest that this mean pattern is likely, it has both operational and anomaly support, but what is in doubt is whether the uk gets a direct hit from the northerlies or will pressure hold enough to deflect the worst into europe?

' as into next week theres a chance that a cold blast of air (and im talking single digit max temps and overnight temps widely around freezing) looks likely to head south as the greenland high/scandinavian trough WILL open the floodgates from the north. its still uncertain that the uk will take a direct hit, but its possible .

the synoptic pattern in your quote of mine might have been a bit premature but that pattern looks likely to happen, and it certainly has been "chillier then the mid teens we are enjoying now" .

Was the great winter of 2010/11 due to sw weather being blocked? Could we see the same this winter?

I wouldn't disagree with you there. We were lucky - but then again, the exceptional rains mainly affected a quite small area. Mostly Cumbria.

No, it wasn't just Cumbria that was affected.. Lancashire (where I am) also got exceptionally bad rainfall (puddles were in my garden), as well as York, Carlisle, parts of Scotland and parts of Wales. They were all featured on the programme tonight..
The south of England got away very lightly there.

if thats a snide dig at me, its not 'next week' yet when a 'possible' cold northerly 'might' hit the uk...

as it happens, thankfully, the op runs are shifting away from the worst case scenario , (which i did allude to ), but the anoms keep the greenland high/scandi low for later next week. of course theres great uncertainty that far off, but the anoms track record is still the best for that far out.

Apart from n Ireland and western Scotland, it seems the westerly gales we get in autumn are absent this year.even now there's no sign of them in the long range forecast.some areas of the uk are maybe going to have a very dry autumn and early winter compared to most years.

this is what i posted last friday, no mention of winter for this week here... looking like the models are going to be right as the tellybox lady said temps could get up to 17c in parts of the southeast.

They were saying high pressure, settled and bright in the south after Monday on the BBC nightly forecast for the week ahead, last Thursday morning. They got yesterday's rain right too, not bad at all. I have to admit that I used to 'model watch' but these days I tend to let the experts do it for me, those nightly 'week ahead' forecasts are really very good on the whole so I record them all.

OMG she's not wrong. 17.7 degrees C maximum here S Hants, sunny periods with almost no wind, ideal direction from the N in these conditions. It's supported too by St. Catherines Point that reached the same temperature at 1pm, so its max could be higher. Joint highest temperature here for the month! Summer is back, a veritable mini heatwave here!
