Last Winter was one of the mildest on record apparently not just here but in the US as well.
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...winter-7475364 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...est-on-record/ http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/news/rel...ter-statistics http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/eart...and-Wales.html http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35228779 Whilst January and February were fairly close to average December more than made up for this. |

Hard ground frost in many parts tonight, air frost too is likely where clioud clears as it has done here S Hants. Already ground temperature is down to -1 deg C here at 11:30, ice on car, black ice likely on many roads still wet from earlier. +3 air temp, falling.

Temperature only about 5/6 degrees tops here today, according to the observations from the met, but it actually felt warmer than that to me and it felt quite pleasant too in the sunshine. I didn't need a coat, just a hoodie was enough. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/w...tion/gcwdjeczy Guess I must be getting used to the lower temperatures.... Thursday was horrible though, 7C, damp and that fine drizzly stuff that soaks you through and gets in your face. |

Looks like the jet stream is coming back over the UK by midweek and the westerly winds plus more rain. the eastern coasts are getting it the next few days then the west next week. At least the weather rut is over for now

Going off on a hike around Buxton tommorow. Top temperature 4C with a possibility of snow falling in the morning!

No lying snow this afternoon in Buxton, not even up at the Cat I see... and +3.5 C at Harpur Hill. Meanwhile down here S Hants I missed my first air frost of the Autumn by 0.2 deg C, though the grass was way below that and out in the countryside, there would no doubt have been an air frost.
Looks like today's max here will be 7.9 deg C... brrrr. |

Yup, it's chilly
Local weather in Devon earlier said, with windchill, it's obviously feeling colder. We are set for 'a severe frost' tonight. -2C or -3C |

Looks like today's max here will be 7.9 deg C... brrrr. Felt colder than most of last winter. Practically everyone I saw was wearing a coat or some sort of jacket as well.In fact as I was going over Snake Pass, and climbed higher and higher, the rain turned to sleet, then snow. I even took a video of it, the coach driver had to turn back!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se2KT0gSV6M It's so cold and miserable when it's damp and cold, I'm fine when it's cold and crisp or mild and rainy, but when it's the two together, it's just horrible. Choose one or the other please!Sure, we've had some nice cool but sunny weather this week, and that had felt fine, but when it's cold and wet, just no.. It doesn't look too good this week either, -3 forecast for tonight and possibility of snow tommorow! It looks to be cold and rainy all through this week, before finally getting a bit milder by the weekend. Temperatures are not forecast to get above single figures though. ![]() Say all you want about it just being "Normal November weather". I've never known it so cold and miserable so early on in the month. It was 15 degrees on bonfire night last year, now we're getting snow and frosts... |

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter...in_and_Ireland I don't remember similar before, in my memorable lifetime anyway And I remember that event on 9th December well. My street was completely covered in black ice that morning. I remember we had a delivery coming and I tried to warn the van driver not to come up the street. He was usually quite sensible but for some reason he insisted in driving to the top of the street. I heard this noise, and I came out. The van was struggling on the ice. He then reveresed into a side street but got stuck in a frozen puddle. The engine was revving, the wheels were spinning like crazy, but the van wasn't moving. I did my best to help him push it out, but it was no use. The ice was so bad that I tripped up a couple of times carefully walking back into the house. Usually I'm a snow fanatic in Winter and I always frantically check the weather forecast for hints of snow, then when they finally forecast some I get really excited, do a snow dance etc, then we get a light flurry and then a couple of hours later it's all melted away.. This year I just wanted a mild (and preferably) dry Winter but it looks like it could be colder this year, though the latest charts suggest a milder December again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT4KoH9AKiY We'll just have to wait and see... |

7.9 degrees?? That's balmy weather up here compared to what we're getting here at the moment! You should have been in Buxton yesterday. It felt like a February day. Absolutely freezing, temp 4/5C, damp, miserable and raining.

Black Ice is a killer. I remember once, mid-70s, near Aberdeen, it had been raining all night but froze on contact with the ground.
I had to do a paper-round and managed easily to get to the papershop and back (theyr'e good on clearing roads) but I couldn't deliver round my estate. My bike kept falling over no matter how vertically I propped it against lamp posts (I wasn't riding it then of course) and I couldn't get up even the slight gradient of peoples driveways without crawling. The estate pavements and roads were just one big ice sheet and it was crystal clear ice. I delivered 6 papers out of a 100 before giving up. |

"my memorable lifetime" is not infallible. But anyway, most posters will remember 2010 while fewer will 81-82, because they are too young

That's exactly what I'd expect in Buxton, it's usually 2 - 4 degrees C colder than here in a northerly, sometimes more. This cool snap is normal November variability, nothing more.

The mention of Buxton always reminds me of a genuine freak weather event. Snow in June 1975:

From the webcams, there is full snow cover now up at Flash, and the Cat, near Buxton. Looks like sleet in Buxton town centre and the heavier precipitation hasn't yet arrived.
Looks like an interesting night, up in them thar hills!

Might even have been 110. It was a new build Barratts estate that ended up at 500 houses.
But, me and a friend usually did it together and got a fiver a week between us (only 1 ex-GPO bike tho') while the smaller rounds got £2.50 300 papers on a Sunday. Even with the bike and rack it was too many, so we left half at my house and went back for them. My friend was ill on the day of the ice. I was on my own. |
