I wonder how many 's are going to get blown down up north over Christmas by Babs?

They're absolutely brilliant

I'd imagine there will be a few tree casualties up there in Scotland as Babs passes by

Storm Barbara is making herself known here in NI this morning. Rain lashing of the window as we speak, the wind hasn't really got going yet though.

Nothing major here in mid Ulster either, the odd gust, drizzly rain now.

low latitude high pressure returns next week, calming things down, drying things up, and should become mild or very mild.

one high drifts away eastward and another azores ridge builds in from the west taking us into the new year.

but does high #2 drift east? or sit to our west? if it sits to our west we might get dry cloudy mild weather like we did in such a situation about 10 - 12 years ago. but if it ridges north, it might give us a northerly blast like the current (00z) gfs suggests.

currently the anomaly charts dont allow for a northerly for more then a few hours - keeping the mean upper flow westerly (8 - 14 days) .

so after a stormy crimbo period, its looking set to settle down, become calmer, drier and milder again from midweek next onwards.

The story of this autumn and early winter is going to be a couple of big blows and then calm again immediately.

Seems to have passed. No one will take heed of future storms if they keep putting warnings up where they aren't needed.

Could even be a Storm Conner on Sunday according to the DE, if the Met Office decide to name that one that is.

On the GFS you can see Storm Conner heading our way as it gains strength and size.

Well it may not be affecting northern Ireland but it's still very windy here in E Lancs. I'm sure some Scottish posters will say how bad it's been soon...

No idea where you are but the strongest gusts will be on the cold front as it crosses the Country, this afternoon and evening in England.

The real storm warning (orange alert) has been restricted to NW Scotland for a few days now - not England - just windy to gales here mainly in the west and in gusts as the rain band passes. Likely to stay windy in the northern half of the UK until Monday though and breezy everywhere else, before it all settles down.

For model watchers early this week, it looks like it will be a case of: ECMWF 2, GFS 1. GFS had the centre of Barbara crossing Scotland but it's ending up more Faroes way, as predicted consistently by ECMWF and GEM.

Fat lady hasn't sung up there, yet. 75mph gust South Uist, 70mph gust at Benbecula, Stornoway and Aultbea so far (all at low level) not to mention the usual mountain suspects e.g. Cairngorm 112 mph and Capel Curig 75mph (650 feet) but many lowland places in the west are seeing 60mph gusts.

In fact the forecast has stated that the strongest winds will be later. I've noticed before that people are expecting the worst of these storms way too quickly,

Central Scotland we were nearly blown off our feet at 1.00 pm with very strong wind and driving rain turning to sleet. It seems to have calmed a bit for now, but still raining yet.

Went down to local shopping estate today, has been wet and windy as predicted, temp not that cold though, about 8 or 9 degrees here. At one point when I was in ASDA the rain was absolutely drumming on the roof and it drowned out the Christmas music! Was also very dark and streetlights on at 4:00pm when I came out the store.

Still, much prefer this stormy weather to clear skies and frost any day.

I like to read this thread to see what is happening, but Barbara seems to have her own thread - making it more difficult (time consuming anyway) to follow events all in one place.

Is every new storm going to have its own thread? I thought this thread was meant for all weather.

Well we have had strong winds and very, very heavy rain here in the West Midlands, I went out to finish my Christmas shopping and got soaked, wind is still quite strong here, but the rain is easing. Just hope that it hasn't been too bad for people in the North and Scotland today.
