Well it looks a lot calmer out there now, so it looks like the worst is over.... Tomorrow's forecast is wet and windy again though, so we'll have to wait and see.
Max wind speed here was 24mph with a max wind gust of 47mph according to the observations from the met for Bingley so not too bad. Could've been worse... |

I like to read this thread to see what is happening, but Barbara seems to have her own thread - making it more difficult (time consuming anyway) to follow events all in one place.
Is every new storm going to have its own thread? I thought this thread was meant for all weather. ![]() ![]() According to weatheronline, the highest gusts at low level stations were all up in NW Scotland or the Isles and seem to be a bit lower than the forecast - though still pretty nasty to be out in! I left Capel Curig in just to show that Wales was affected too. Sule Skerry (12 m) 78 mph Fair Isle (57 m) 76 mph Raf Mona (62 m) 75 mph Capel Curig (215 m) 75 mph Scatsa/Shetland Island (22 m) 75 mph Benbecula (6 m) 75 mph South Uist Range (4 m) 75 mph Sumburgh Cape (5 m) 74 mph Lerwick (84 m) 73 mph Aultbea (10 m) 71 mph Wick (36 m) 71 mph Stornoway (15 m) 70 mph. Bracing on Blackpool beach - 57 mph gust. Bottom o't list and nobut a refreshing breeze were: Southampton Airport (9 m) 34 mph Jersey Airport (84 m) 34 mph London Southend Airport (15 m) 32 mph Manchester (69 m) 31 mph. |

1st anniversary of this weather thread that began on Christmas Eve last year. It's ticked over nicely all through 2016.
Now into a lull between the two named storms of Barbara now moving away and Conor coming on Christmas Day over the far north of the UK. Here is a rather nice wind observation map from this site - http://www.xcweather.co.uk/ |

possible cold blast into the new year.... its looking like the second high, after this weeks first thatll bring mild weather later on, will be centered on a higher latitude. a brief cold blast is likely, but unless high #2 builds towards greenland, then a blast is all it will be.

Latest GFS Chart shows that the high pressure next week will be brief before it turns unsettled again into new year with quite a few more storms coming off the Atlantic. So the stormy weather is not over yet.

Latest forecasts for Xmas Day around the country.....
London Thick Cloud 14°C Southampton Thick Cloud 13°C Feeling much milder although with a noticeably brisk wind on Christmas Day. It will be dry for the most part but cloudy with a few spots of drizzle possible. Manchester Thick Cloud 13°C Burnley Rain Likely, 11/12°C Rather cloudy on Christmas day with mild temperatures, but it'll be chilly in the wind with outbreaks of rain. Heavier and more persistent rain will arrive from the north-west later. Penzance Thick Cloud, Light Rain possible 13°C Rather cloudy on Christmas day with a few bright spells and mild temperatures. However it'll be chilly in the wind, with outbreaks of rain at times. Aberdeen Some Sunny Spells, 12°C Very mild on Christmas morning, and largely dry with some sunny spells. It will be breezy with a possibility of gales for a time late morning. Colder in the evening. Stornoway, 11°C Very mild start with patchy rain, but gales, locally severe. Much colder in the afternoon with showers turning wintry on higher ground , even to lower levels in north overnight. So mild, wet, overcast, damp and drizzly as I predicted all along. |

South East England!
Just opened window, and boy we've been storm hit, and it's roaring too. Direction of North West is where the sound is coming from! Santa will be kicked off his route, and hope he stays safe. ![]() Think we may have some damage around these parts come morning, as I saw something white overturned across the road already. Don't think we've ever had storm winds ar Christmas, as it was usually snow, rain, or calmness. To think I was going to go out! ![]() Odd really, but 1024 MB going towards sun coming out. You wouldn't think it though, as that wind is chilly!

looking like a 'big freeze' for europe (norther/central) into the new year is likely as the second high (after this weeks milder one) builds from the west.
something to keep an eye on, a large cold pool to our east. it could head our way by the end of week 1 in january IF the (second) high to our west is near enough and centered far enough north. as the 00z gfs currently suggests. the anomaly charts though dont yet allow for this, keeping the mean upper flow from the west or northwest, the high anchored just south of west. |

You've forgotten about the Midlands Steffan!
![]() Here it is: Birmingham Thick Cloud 12°C It'll be a rather cloudy and very mild start to Christmas Day, with outbreaks of light rain and drizzle at times, mainly hills. A band of rain, heavy at times, will move south-eastwards during the afternoon, accompanied by gusty winds. Tonight The band of rain will clear away south-eastwards to leave a mostly dry night, with clear spells developing for many. Perhaps a few scattered showers overnight. Colder than previous night. It's actually going to get much colder for all next week, but brighter and drier. Could see some frost as temperatures are forecast to dip at night across the country during next week. Winds remaining in the west for the most part. BTW, it's about 11°C, fairly cloudy and a bit windy but dry here in Lancashire. Feels very mild outside despite the wind. We did very briefly see a patch of blue sky and the sun actually popped it's head out behind a cloud for 10 minutes, a first for Christmas Day here!

Thanks for the weather info MushymanRob. The impending milder conditions better clear off again because the last thing I want in 3 weeks time is another mild Christmas this year. 12°C and cloudy currently in Newport. http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2641591 At least it'll get much colder after Christmas with some frost likely as well.

There are several 15 degrees C (rounded to nearest degree) temperatures today so far but they may be all below the official Christmas Day record of 15.6, for example Aboyne and Aberdeen recently were 14.7. Doncaster has had a series of "15" degrees C and Humberside had one such reading but neither may have achieved the record, we'll have to wait for confirmation though because max-min readings are generally reported later in the day - and only the Met Office have ready access to "climate only" station data.
Met Office tweets will no doubt reveal all if the record does go. Here in S Hants so far the minimum was 10.6 just after midnight and the maximum so far is 12.3 deg C, overcast and a bit breezy. |

11.2 °C is the maximum today so far at my nearest weather station Bingley SAMOS so no records broken here. I don't think this station has ever broken any records actually, it just gets mediocre temperatures, wind, sunshine hours and rainfall all year.
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/w...tion/gcwdjeczy The Iles of Scilly was the mildest yesterday with a temp of 11.7. UK Extremes - Christmas Eve Highest maximum temperature Isles of Scilly 11.7 °C Lowest maximum temperature Wick Airport 3.7 °C Lowest minimum temperature Dalwhinnie 0.3 °C Highest rainfall Machrihanish 25.2 mm Sunniest Camborne 1.1 hours |

Wind has just in the last hour or so started to get stronger and I can just about see the bushes moving in the garden. It's been mild here, but I've just taken the dog out and the wind is making it seem colder than it is. Hope everyone has had a good day.

Aberdeen/Dyce (the airport) reached 15.1. Feeling the effects for Storm Conor now though & snow showers are in the mix for part of Boxing Day apparently.
Storm Conor... 78 mph gust so far (and many close to that) recorded at Sumburgh (Shetland). 149mph on top of Cairngorm, hope there was nobody up there at the time!

Confirmed as the joint 3rd. warmest Christmas Day on record, level with 2011 at 15.1, both at Aberdeen Airport... after the 15.6 recorded at Leith in 1896 and Killerton in 1920. https://twitter.com/metoffice/status/813077693386342401

The Hull Daily Mail reckons Hull was the 'hottest' place in Britain today.

still looking interesting for next week if its cold youre after.... several model runs now have a quite significant snow risk for some areas... but these usually downgrade nearer the time.
the anomaly charts are still suggesting a mean upper flow from the northwest... so average temps at best but some much colder incursions too, its this mix that could bring a snow risk. |

Forecasting fun to come, that's for sure... ECMWF and GEM won with the Christmas storms as GFS had them wayyyy too far south for days, but who will win the next round? Yet more 80mph+ gusts in the Shetlands again around lunchtime today - it must have been a horrendous Christmas up there, 60mph+ gusts throughout with their only respite a few hours early on Christmas morning (good ol' Father Christmas!) but barely a mention or sight of it on the news and media. |

Record breaker!
The current sea level pressure here (S Hants) is 1044 millibars and it reached 1044.5 mb at 11:30 am. The latter rounds to 1045mb and is the same as nearby Southampton Airport. It appears to be the highest at this location for at least the ten years of my recordings here, the previous record being 1043 mb. Also had only my 2nd air frost of the month, -0.8C, the first being on Dec. 1st. |

looking urgh next week...
mean northwesterly flow looks set to bring a mixture of very cold (like next monday) to just average cold, as systems cross the uk on the northwesterly. so cold northerlies, less cold westerlies, wind rain and wintriness on hills, mixed with sun/showers, wintry on northern hills, but average - cold. |
