I thought this Not Going Out was tone deaf, personally. First up, it just wasn't funny. I watched it 2 days ago and I can't remember a single gag. Secondly, this show has never had much drama and if you suddenly bring in such an intense subject to a comedy you have to have earned it, I.e. One Foot In The Grave always having a sinister edge. This was like if Friends had been off for a year, came back for a special and it was about Ben being targeted by a child molester. Just stupid and badly judged.
The BBC has been looking for an excuse to stop renewing this for ages. I'd say a Christmas special that they didn't feel they could promote, shoved off at 22.45, likely didn't get many viewers and likely drew a few complaints will be all the ammunition they need.
