The Number One Xmas Day Question -
Brian The Dog
25-12-2015
So! The big mystery:

For how long do you boil Brussel Sports to death?

We need answers!

[In other news: Woke up this morning and realised that I had brought everything needed for the Xmas dinner apart from the fact that I had zero oil to roast the potatoes in. A big thanks to my local petrol station for being open this morning. Disaster avoided.

Make a cross in the end of them. Boil until almost done as they'll continue to cook in the hot water whilst you do something else.

And how long would that be?

roast them in a little bit of oil and salt. They taste amazing and significantly better than boiled!

That's and interesting twist!

Boil for 5 mins then drain. They will suck up water if allowed to stand. Reheat in the microwave if need be.

The cross in the end is quaint but unnecessary.

I prefer to steam my sprouts over a pan of other veg, maybe leeks or carrots. They don't go so soggy.

Are you using engine or gearbox oil?

Sunflower! Did the roasts a treat, but my car won't start.

Anyway, I just boiled them and kept taking one out and testing it until they were just right. Best I've done them!

I steam mine and I don't cross them, that's what makes them go mushy.

Being on my own I usually have frozen sprouts as I only eat a few at a time. I microwave all my veg for about 6 - 7 minutes. If it's fresh veg I add about a tablespoon of water if frozen I don't add water. All my veg usually come out perfectly.
Christmas day I had some fresh runner beans, carrots and frozen sprouts. Only put in a tiny trickle of water, microwaved for 7 minutes, all in the same plastic dish and all the veg was perfect.

Half/quarter them and stirfry them with garlic, red onion and pancetta/bacon.

3 to 4 minutes on the boil then in the pan with crispy bacon/pancetta to cook in the fat from the meat.
Halved/quartered as above depending on size.

I remember finding this out about 5 or 6 years ago and been shocked I'd wasted all that time putting a cross in them as that is what I'd done all my life, as had all my previous partners, my parents and grandparents and ex partners parents and grandparents.

A little late, but I just bung everything in the pressure cooker (frozen ones that is) and they seem to come out how we like them.
No peeling or cutting daft crosses in them either and they taste just the same.
