The scriptwriters are having a laugh with this one : do they think it's 1850? A single mother with a young son being jailed two days before Christmas.
A huge extenuating circumastance would be the fact that Maria was recently wrongfully remanded in custody for several weeks for a murder that hadn't even been committed and her solicitor would definitely be able to cite this in court when pleading for a lenient sentence (as all factors are taken into account when sentencing is being passed down).
