Well I can certainly speak for Emmerdale on this one - they always mock up either outside of the Kirkstall Road side of the ITV studios in Leeds, where the HD studios are now used for Emmerdale interiors (the old one up the road is now the studio tour facility) as whichever hospital they are portraying. This was most recently used for Paddy and Pierce's tet-a-tet about his anger. All Emmerdale hospital exteriors are in the HD sets when / if used.
Emmerdale sometimes use an other location about half a mile down the road, though this is most normally used as a police station exterior. Corrie's hospital set interior WAS behind the health centre set. Not sure where it is at Salford, nor what they have as exterior. Holby and Casualty both use a purpose built fully-enclosed hospital set (both exterior and interior) at BBC Wales on Cardiff Docks. |

LostTripper never said that, he is convinced they use real rooms in real hospitals

Sorry to disagree but many years ago I spoke at length to a locations manager for Granada TV about his work which included finding locations and the efforts to make then to make things realistic, especially period stuff and by comparison CS current standards are downright amateurish. I'm quite surprised actually, although I still doubt this is common practice these days. Unless reports are to be believed and the NHS really is desperate for cash

Sorry to disagree but many years ago I spoke at length to a locations manager for Granada TV about his work which included finding locations and the efforts to make then to make things realistic, especially period stuff and by comparison CS current standards are downright amateurish. At that time he was working on a series called Medics in which Tom Baker played a leading part. The locations manager said that much of the indoor filming was done at Trafford General Hospital in an unused large ward. Other local hospitals were used at various times but he said Trafford was the main one at that time we spoke. This man was extremely interesting and he spoke of how the ward was kitted out by medical equipment manufacturers eager to get their products shown in this very specialised form of product placement. In the series itself a plaque was visible in the reception area. Those who have been in in Trafford General at all, might well be aware of this plaque and the significance to us all. The writing on the plaque could not be seen for obvious reasons but if anyone wants to look up 'Park Hospital Davyhulme 1948' they will see what the plaque commemorates. In the late 1990s another friend who has worked in a senior position at Trafford for many years, confirmed that parts of that series were filmed indoors at that hospital. I have no doubt both my friends were telling the truth. The internet, a much less reliable source than them in my eyes, reveals the following use of hospitals in that series. Ancoats Hospital, Old Mill Street, Ancoats, Manchester, Greater Manchester, England, UK (as Henry Park Hospital) Hope Hospital, Stott Lane, Salford, Greater Manchester, England, UK (Henry Park Hospital, interior, 1990-1994) Prestwich Hospital, Prestwich, Manchester, Greater Manchester, England, UK (Henry Park Hospital, operating theatres, 1992-1994) Tameside General Hospital, Fountain Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, England, UK (Henry Park Hospital, exterior, 1992-1994) Trafford General Hospital, Davyhulme, Greater Manchester, England, UK (Henry Park Hospital, interior, 1992-1994) Hope Hospital is now called Salford Royal and it is a fact that the main entrance area is frequently is used in Corrie scenes with ambulances and patients coming and going. The private ward shots might be done there as well, I would hope not given the problems of the NHS. The doctor with the mop of hair in this clip seems familiar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt9ZD2_J8tc |

I've emailed David Nugent to get him to settle this as someone currently involved in Corrie. Then there can be no argument.

But that was over 20 years ago. For sure it may have been common practice to use real hospitals or old hospitals for series in the 90s and prior but soaps and Casualty/Holby City these days use purpose built sets or similar
So my question was what do they use for that ward which looks realistic. It could be a room adapted to look like a ward anywhere. A custom built set or filmed in hospital? I do not know - but those corridors are certainly realistic in scale. The A and E waiting room and the main entrance interior and exterior we see at times are as real as you can get. My next point that Phelan is in a new room, laid out differently, without the interior windows needed to keep an eye on patients. It looks more like an office kitted out with a few medical bits and pieces. So I wondered why there was a change. Programmes like Casualty are entirely different as wards have to feature in every single episode and for large chunks of it and not on the occasional basis as THE ward is. So I don't know for sure whether THE private ward is in a hospital or not but various other interior film locations are definitely inside Salford Royal. |

I am not going to look up all the past episodes but do you agree it looks like whenever someone ends up in hospital in Corrie it is always in the same private room no matter what the problem the medical issue is or even when for example there was a minibus accident miles away. That room and the corridors around it are well constructed and realistic, a contrast to the sets of the houses and pub, cafe etc which are featured daily. The sets are not so realistic - the low ceilings and door frames are an obvious give away and the hospital scenes are in normal sized rooms.

I've been in the hospital set. There's 2 private rooms and a sort of waiting room / ER with a trellis type divider. They move the bed to either end and use different side walls with different windows to make it less obvious, but its fairly easy to tell if you compare between recent-ish stays. It's not a real hospital! They use temporary signage to make a studio building into the hospital exterior, it's all at media city UK near Salford quays.

Hardly occasional!

No wonder they need a medical set - more hospitalisation than Casualty and Holby City put together! It seems that Phelan's stay for his bump on the head has exceeded that of Sir Ken for his stroke and Anna's for severe burns treatment. |

What? You think they film in a real hospital.
If you mean TV companies generally, In a word - yes. Or in three words - without a doubt. Do YOU think Corrie build sets that look exactly the same as the outside of the main entrance to Salford Royal Hospital so they can film to exterior shots of 'Wetherfield General'? The private ward that Corrie patients always go to seems to be a real medical private room judging from the corridors and other rooms adjoining it - perhaps in a private hospital where there would be less potential for criticism over use of facilities. |

THE ward seems a very realistic looking set especially for one in a non medical drama. The need for a hospital set to be built and used so often means that so many story lines are SORs. The residents of CS must be the unluckiest in the country, healthwise. Are there any other sets for interiors of public type buildings other than the pub, bistro, factory etc? The outside of hospitals and other public buildings have certainly been used in the past. I will watch out for them in the future - as I said I cannot be bothered trawling back to find them but obviously large rooms used for wedding receptions etc are 'borrowed' not to mention more obvious things such as church interiors, airport and railway station scenes. |

saw one behind the scenes on GMTV i think where they showed a general set which could be anything from hospital ward to classroom to prison visiting area,
some studios hire permanent sent like the one from the Bill which I think they still hire out to anybody who needs a police station to film in, the also have a court room and hospital set as well. Then of course you get the real deal so want to film in an empty prison? come to Lancaster. |

Casting my mind back, I seem to remember some dramatic scenes set in a railway station - was it Leanne involved? The character was supposed to be catching a train to London, and it was obviously Manchester Victoria that was used which led to some comments since Piccadilly is the station for London trains from Manchester.

Corrie invested a lot into a hospital set, hence why it is used so often.

The school is not a necessity, the police station however, is a priority to deal with the murder and mayhem on the mean streets of weatherfield.
