SD on a 40" 4k set?

Seen an UHD set at Richer Sounds - 40" and looks just the job (don't want anything bigger)
There's babble on the RS website that a UHD TV can actually "improve" the quality of SD and HD; "but not, obviously, up to 4k standard".

But what does SD look like on a small-ish 4k set? Simple queation - would it be better than on an *ordinary* 40" set, or are there far too many other factors to be taken into consideration?

Far too many factors - but a good quality Full HD set will give a better picture than a cheap 4K set, in either SD or HD.

If you're buying, then you really need to do side by side comparisons in all modes.

That's pretty much what I thought. Trouble is - TV shops always show the finest quality DVD on a loop. They don't tend to show the normal SD programmes - and when you ask it's strange how "it's not connected to an aerial"....

Think I'll keep my hands in my pockets until there are more HD channels and prices of god quality sets tumble as they always do!

Actually you've got more choice than you think. There's Audio T/Practical Hi-Fi at 63-65 Bridge Street. On the opposite side of the road (54 Bridge Street) there's Super-Fi. These are both specialist Hi-Fi and AV firms and part of national chains. Richers is just down the road on Deansgate

If you want to park directly outside a store then you're going to end up at a place that sells fridges, washing machines, deep fat fryers, toasters and microwave ovens. Take your pick.

Looking at their websites neither do LG sets around 40-43"

Has to be LG as they are the only ones with the Now TV app which prevents mauling round with (yet more) boxes, leads etc. There is the option of chromecast but no idea what quality that gives.

Think so - but they haven't got what I'm looking for.

Did a test on my old man's 40" LG TV (standard HD not UHD) - streamed Eurosport from my laptop via HDMI and the picture was more than acceptable. May go down the ordinary 40" HD route as I reckon NOW and Eurosport will be fine on it; and kick SD channels into touch. Hopefully all the ex-red button Olympic channels will be avalable on the BBC Sport app and that's pretty good quality too.

I have just upgraded from an expensive 55" 1080p Panasonic plasma to a 4K 55" cheap Hisense LCD and SD is not that much worse than the plasma. Basically crap in - crap out and can certainly say the Hisense works absolute wonders upscaling everything.

I only got a real sense of the upscaling being done when I played a dvd rip or 720p rip on my HTPC and you see how little of the 4K real estate these natively take up.

Makes very little sense to purchase a 1080p tv at this point because the price differential vs 4K is virtually none now ... only thing I would say is that you would pay a premium for a 40" model over the default 50" as they are virtually the same price.

I live in an area technology left behind. Currys, Argos and - er - that's it. So much for the white heat of technology, all the decent shops have gone and we're left with a charity shop wall-to-wall with CRT's

Have a feeling that unless you watch a 40" TV at arm's length, you won't see much difference between 4k (when the channels kick in) and HD, maybe even 720 which Eurosport Player broadcasts in? I sit a good 3 strides from the screen, often further.

The upscaling on the Hisense is just brilliant thanks and the FALD makes it punch way above it's price.
